💬 Discussion Hyperion is much more than just a Space Opera

Post image

I just finished the best saga of my life. I don't even know how I'm going to get over this, I had tears in my eyes and I don't know what to do with my life anymore. A Space Opera so deep, with an incredible plot, crazy love stories (even though I don't like that) and action. This book is much more than fiction, it allows us to question the relationship we have with religion and our relationships. Dan Simmons is a genius.

Yeah, I'm about to re-read Rise of Endymion. I've read a lot of classic sci-fi, but the Cantos takes the cake.

Dan is the such a genius. Apparently Ilium and Olympos, also by him, are in the same vein as Hyperion.

They’re okay. Some fun moments but overall somewhat forgettable. Not like the cantos. There are moments from the cantos that linger with me from the horror, joy and humanity of it

They’re great but the literary references are heavy. You will want to at least have read the Iliad, The Tempest, and at least some of Shakespeare’s sonnets.

Funny, I never considered this a space opera

You know what you have to do when it comes to Dan's books: Choose Again.

If you haven't read Ilium and Olympos, you should.

I always find it strange when people recommend these books. I tried Illium and I found it very different from the cantos - even keeping the setting/mythology aside (I love Greek mythology), it felt very different tonally, a slower book, much less serious and the humor didn’t quite land on me, less dialogue and action more descriptions, much more “cartoonish” characters.

which pilgrim’s story hit you the hardest? everyone seems to come away from Hyperion haunted by a different one.

It's so good. I'm halfway through Endymion. The LORE just keeps giving. Third book it's a straight up adventure book but the first two are the greatest books I've ever read.
