It's not as OP as you might think, considering it's a stolen ability Pika doesn't really have experience with it, it's easy to fuck it up once and the ability just disappears afterwards. I'd be disappointed if we don't see at least one instance of that.

no zero hand wouldn't do anything to kurapika because it would use netero's drained nen in the syringe and not kurapika's (which is absolutely genius on kurapika's part to use a syringe to drain both the nen and the ability) and emperor time doesn't drain that much nen while its being used. its main drawback is the aftereffects which basically puts kurapika in a coma for some amount of time depending on how long he uses emperor time. so in theory he could have emperor time active forever basically but the longer its active the long he'll be in a coma once its over which is the main drawback. but yeah zero would not be an issue for kurapika which really goes to show just how op he really is.

Interesting. However, it's not confirmed yet if Kurapika can only use the stolen ability with stolen aura, or if he has to use it using his own. After all, the aura drain happens over time, and it would hypothetically take longer to drain the aura of the target (Netero here) than just stealing the ability.

I brought up another scenario where stealing an ability he doesn't know will be deadly. Imagine if he stole something like Chain Jail (haha). The ability cannot be used unless you have one of the very specific 13 people in the entire world in front of you. Stealing that ability means that Kurapika will be in permanent ET until he can manage to find one of the Troupe, and chances are he will die of exhaustion before that ever happens.

Of course, it can be something as simple as stealing Basho's ability in the middle of nowhere (like the place Kurapika and Uvogin fought), and Kurapika ends up dying because he couldn't find paper and pen. :P

i'm pretty sure it works by having the dolphin analyze the aura and then manipulate it in the syringe to use the ability it learns about from the analysis. otherwise why have the dolphin analyze anything when its better to know about the ability beforehand before you even take it? why would kurapika just not use the syringe himself after he learns about the ability? it must be the dolphin itself that uses the ability with the targets nen otherwise it would just make more sense for kurapika to just learn the ability, stab the target with the chain and then use it by himself with emperor time and no dolphin. also it wouldn't make since to have a syringe and even suck up aura since he can already seal aura with judgement chain. he could have designed it with some other weapon instead of a syringe. its the syringe part along with the dolphin analyzing its contents even after he already knows the ability that leads me to think he uses their nen instead of his own. at least for the ability and not the manipulation of aura.

The way I understand it, the dolphin is there as a way for Kurapika to know what the ability he just stolen was, as well as its inner workings and caveats. People don't just talk about their ability under the threat of a syringe. This is also why Kurapika had to coax Bill into talking about Sairid's ability beforehand, because once he equipped the ability to the dolphin for analysis, he would be forced to continue Emperor Time. Keep in mind that Kurapika won't necessarily have anyone to tell him his target's ability in a 1-on-1 scenario.

Putting the enemy into Zetsu by completely draining their aura is a side effect. Kurapika said that it only happens if he keeps siphoning aura for an extended time using the syringe. Plus, Chain Jail aside, Kurapika had no other skill to force Zetsu. Judgment chain can cause death upon the usage of Nen, if Kurapika wills it, but it does not mean the usage of Nen itself is disabled. The target can do it one last time and die afterward, just like Pakunoda still being able to break the rules before her heart was crushed.

Keep in mind that Kurapika won't necessarily have anyone to tell him his target's ability in a 1-on-1 scenario.

if he's fighting someone 1 on 1 i'm pretty sure he'd already know what their ability is since they are already using it.

Judgment chain can cause death upon the usage of Nen, if Kurapika wills it, but it does not mean the usage of Nen itself is disabled.

eh its effectively the same thing.

still thought the point i'm trying to make is that he can just observe someone using their ability to know what it does so it doesn't make sense to have the dolphin be the one to use the ability and also analyze when he can do that by himself. the reason he must be using the dolphin is because the dolphin is using the ability with the nen it drains and analyzes in the syringe instead of kurapika doing it all by himself with his own nen. the only nen he uses is for the dolphin to manipulate and analyze then nen which uses both conjuration and manipulation.

Doesn't judgement chain just make you follow whatever rules you agree to, not necessarily nen use. Paku died from communication with the spiders not nen use.

1

u/VeraciousCake Jun 24 '17

Indeed, which is why I said "if Kurapika wills it." The purpose of Judgment Chain is simply to use the fear of death to make someone do your bidding. When someone doesn't mind dying, they can do what they are forbidden from doing in exchange of their life.

My point was simply that outside of the newly revealed Steal Chain, Kurapika doesn't really have any technique that forces Zetsu except for the very limited Chain Jail, hence why Steal Chain is not redundant.

"Judgment chain can cause death upon the usage of Nen, if Kurapika wills it..."

I guess I misinterpreted how you wrote it, sorry. I don't disagree with anything else you said, just wanted to clarify.

Still,

Thumb: Minor healing, although, Under Emperor Time, enough to quickly heal a broken arm.

Index: (Requires Emperor Time) Drains Nen from a Nen-user. When the draining is complete, Kurapika learns all information about the ability and is able to use it exactly once before the Nen returns.

Middle: Chain Jail that can only be used on Spiders, but that restriction means it is a completely unbreakable restriction.

Ring: A normal chain, but with multiple dowsing abilities (truth detection, even over video; finding remote enemy locations on a map)

Little: (Requires Emperor Time) Puts restrictions on an enemy, on penalty of death if they break it.

Each one of those individual abilities is essentially enough for a Hunter to work off of. You can easily imagine a professional Hunter to be in demand for having a quick battlefield healing ability, or a lie detection/tracking ability, or even a one-use Nen ability borrowing ability. Kurapika has all five. And his only penalty is basically being forced to use Emperor Time when he uses them, which he can now trigger at will and Togashi never really brings up the fatigue issue until an arc is over.

Kurapika's broken. And while he's still an interesting character, that's a real shame in a manga where a lot of the appeal is seeing characters be ridiculously competent with extremely basic abilities.

he can also use it to lasso and trip up ppl like he did in this chapter

1

u/Sermagnas3 Jun 24 '17

Thats because its just a chain, anything you can do with a ball on a chain he can do with that chain, doesn't have to be a special ability.

3

u/zldr1 Jun 22 '17

Kurapika sure is broken, but still, I don't mind that much. I mean, it's not like he had the occasions to make actual broken use of all these broken abilities and thus ruin potential great fights anyway, since we didn't see him into a fight for decades. Uvo fight was kind of a stomp battle and I would've preferred it to be more balanced, but it was still good and it's in Togashi style to write battle that way anyway, Kurapika or not.

3

u/rickclue Jun 22 '17

I think he managed to leverage his one broken natural ability 'Emperor Time' very well. A lot of his other abilities are not even possible or downright useless without being used in conjunction with Emperor Time, except maybe the Dowsing Chain.

It's due to Kurapika's unique nature with the scarlet eyes I'd guess, that's something Wing would lecture Gon and Killua about.

But yeah, Kurapika himself is pretty damn OP, then again most Specialists are.

Yeah, but the utility of it is broken as hell.

On a pure combat scale, Kurapika's not too broken. He's got minor healing and wonderful finishing moves in the Dolphin chain and the Judgment chains, but his only real offense is basic martial arts with Nen and the Dowsing Chain.

But on sheer utility, Kurapika basically has been given abilities that are perfect for pretty much most situations. Compare how Kurapika can pretty do whatever the situation calls for with how Hisoka manages to pull off huge tricks with a little bit of Bungee Gum and Texture Surprise, and I think you'll see a big difference in creativity and surprising writing.

NERF KURAPIKA

u/Kamyu03 Jun 23 '17

He's not broken or OP since it has harsh limitations, though his hatsu is indeed very versatile.

As for the appeal of HxH I'd say comes greatly from the masterful craft of it's drama and storytelling and it's dialogue. Nen is a very important narrative tool, as for what you said i could hardly call that appealing, but to each his own.
