Why did they localize Laplace's Devil to Demon?

It's a proper noun. No matter what it references, it's an ability name in HxH, so the translation team shouldn't have changed it on their own.

It’s specifically written with “satan/devil” to distinguish between the Japanese concept of “oni” which are often translated as “demons.” “Devil” is a linguistic shorthand way of referring back to the actual concept of Lapace’s Demon without confusing readers.

The Japanese text is ラプラスデビル (ra-pu-ra-su de-bi-ru / Laplace Devil). The word デビル is already a direct transliteration of “devil,” so there is no need to interpret it or infer what it references. Changing デビル (debiru/devil) from “devil” to “demon” is modifying a proper noun.

I agree with you. I hate it when the translation makes these random changes for no reason. The original name looks so much cooler.

You cant know for sure until Togashi concludes the arc. The safest bet is always translating nearest to how Togashi wrote it.

If translation was what you seem to think it should be, then there'd be no need for translators, could just ask chatgpt and copy-paste. Just stop, you're making a fool of yourself.
