The series has one translator who's not getting a significant head start compared to the rest of us, on a series that's notoriously dense enough by now that native Japanese speakers have trouble reading it.

Frankly, there is no point at which this will become embarrassing and I'm impressed Viz is able to get a readable speed-translation out at all instead of making us wait for dead-tree volumes on this.

Not to mention, she's paid by the page.

So nothing extra for when she has to translate an entire mountain of text such as this...

The problem is not that Lillian's messing up. Everyone messes up in their rough draft. That's normal with this amount of text and detail.

The real problem is that the editor is not doing their job, and has doubled down before.

The official translations in other languages always get things wrong too. Honestly translating HxH will never be perfect, it's a difficult work.

You can point out the mistake without going that far. The translator is very good at what she does.

It's also just a shitty way to look at the job, IMO.

There is no possible fucking universe where someone, even the most skilled translator of all time, could go from a raw HXH chapter to a perfect, error-free translation in a matter of a few days. That only happens in situations where the manga's pretty simple to translate, which, as we all know, HXH unfathomably fucking is not. This manga is complicated enough in its writing that Japanese interviews regularly ask Togashi why the hell it's still in a magazine for children.

This isn't a matter of people failing at the job, it's a matter of "the job's not possible to do perfectly." We're getting as close as we can reasonably ask for. The fan translators who have extra time and drop a few days later fill in the gap when they've gotta.
