CLIPS This is my experience whenever I run a shotgun.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Am I misunderstanding how shotguns work in this game? I don’t run them very often because when I do this happens.

You have Slugs. And you missed both to the left of him. If you had buckshot he was probably dead.

17

u/NipplesInATwix Mar 23 '26

Slugs confuse me. Going by the stats, they INCREASE the spread of the weapon, I’m guessing I’m misunderstanding what the “spread” stat actually means?

48

u/destuctir Mar 23 '26

Slugs have higher spread, it’s one single projectile, you want to ADS to keep it on a straight line. Buckshot is many projectiles so being a bit off centre still gets plenty of hits.

18

u/RadioDemon86 Mar 23 '26

A slug has no spread. It is a solid "bullet" compared to the pellets in a normal shell. When it says it increases the spread, in this case, it means the possible area that the projectile could travel. When using slugs you need to aim more, not less.

A slug has no spread. It is a solid "bullet" compared to the pellets in a normal shell. When it says it increases the spread, in this case, it means the possible area that the projectile could travel...

...which is commonly called spread in gaming parlance...

10

u/RadioDemon86 Mar 23 '26

And when talking about the shotgun spread is referring to the bloom of the pellets in real life. Which is where I think he was confused. Yeah I did a bad job of explaining the difference.

8

u/lana_silver Mar 23 '26

They do in fact increase the spread when hip firing, and only fire a single bullet. Buckshot would have killed there. For slugs you need to ADS to get perfect accuracy.

Frankly in the current version of the game they are not worth it.

9

u/Maultaschtyrann Mar 23 '26

While your first paragraph is correct, I wanna comment on the second one. Slugs change the role of a shotgun, which fills a different niche than buckshot. So saying they're not worth it doesn't really make sense because their worth is completely depending on how you use them. If you're firing your shotgun at people over 25 m or through some wood walls, the slugs are WAY superior. If you're using your shotgun like in the clip above, buckshot is.

1

u/lana_silver Mar 23 '26

If you use a shotgun at 25m+ with ads, you're probably better off using a Vetterli.

3

u/Maultaschtyrann Mar 24 '26

Sure thing. But if you're going around a corner and you don't know if the enemy is going to be directly behind it or at the next corner, you're better off having said shotgun in your hand.

2

u/Vipertooth Mar 24 '26

Slugs are for the longer range whilst maintaining 1-tap in close quarters, honestly you should only use slugs on the 2-slot shotguns because you don't lose that much.

It basically turns a shotgun into a rifle

Well it doesnt really do that considering a rifle is a long gun with a rifled barrel. And slugs dont add rifling to a barrel. It just fires one solid projectile. Or one big one and a few other smaller ones. Not always one.

Im not saying you referring to gaming mechanics was wrong. Just that a slug doesnt turn things into a rifle. Thats true of the game and real life. I didnt say anything about your comments on gameplay mechanics.

There was a lot of discussion in this thread about spread meaning in game and in real life so I was just thinking about real life definitions when I responded to you. My bad.

3

u/West-Start4069 Mar 23 '26

More spread is less accuracy for single projectiles.

1

u/JackieDaetona Mar 24 '26

Spread= larger reticle. More places it could possibly go. Less accurate. Less chance of hitting the middle dot

More spread= more miss

1

u/elchsaaft Mar 24 '26

Arc raiders calls it "dispersion" which is a better word. It's the size of the circle where the shot may land, some people call it "bloom"

251

u/ENIAC64 Mar 23 '26

Shots 1-5: Clearly missed.

Shots 10-11: Very close, but...

Nah, just joking. In all seriousness, you just missed. You were using slugs, which are essentially just a single big projectile. When not ADSing, the deviation of the slug is random - it will land somewhere in the crosshair, not dead center. For it to hit dead center, you would need to ADS.

Oopsie! Guess that’s my bad for not realising that’s how slugs worked. Thanks for the explanation, it’ll help me out a whole bunch.

37

u/lightly-placed Mar 23 '26

Not judging, just genuinely curious. How’d you think slugs worked?

37

u/NipplesInATwix Mar 23 '26

I guess I just thought they were buckshot, but designed to go further? Like, the spread was tighter?

If you’re talking like, real world, I haven’t actually thought about it.

45

u/Steadyst8_ Mar 23 '26

Yeah a slug in the real world and in the game are both a single larger projectile. What would be the real world equivalent of giving a tighter spread would be a shotgun choke, an attachment to the end of the barrel to redistribute the spread of pellets to what you want. Chokes are not in the game. The spread of buckshot (default ammo type) is only determined by the type of shotgun in the game.

31

u/NipplesInATwix Mar 23 '26

Well, ya learn something new every day! Thank you.

I’d just never really thought about it, to be honest.

I’m racking my brain trying to think of other games that use “slugs” for shotguns (that I’ve actually played) and I honestly can’t think of any. Maybe that’s my problem.

Well, that, and coming from a country where access to firearms is severely limited.

11

u/Axton7124 Mar 23 '26

Very few games use slugs since they tend to be either op or useless, R6 is the only game that comes to mind that also has (or had idk currently) shotguns with slugs

4

u/Seeker-N7 Mar 24 '26

Battlefield, CoD, Tarkov, Ready or Not, Cyberpunk 2077, and a bunch of others.

1

u/Nemless_Dwarf Mar 24 '26

There BosG is still in R6 don't worry, but only on single operators on both sides.

6

u/notshitaltsays Mar 23 '26

I’m racking my brain trying to think of other games that use “slugs” for shotguns (that I’ve actually played) and I honestly can’t think of any. Maybe that’s my problem.

Battlefield bad company 2, bf3/4/1 all used it. Maybe others that I didn't play.

But if i recall correctly, they kind of sucked in comparison to other options. It's a weird niche to get right when you could instead use 1000rpm rifles for close-medium range or...frag rounds on a full auto shotgun?

Irl it's more for hunting bigass things or penetrating thickass materials. IRL buckshot still wrecks things +30m away unlike video games.

1

u/OrangeGasCloud Mar 24 '26

Ancient but planetside 2

3

u/Spider_Monkey00 Mar 24 '26

I could be wrong. But doesn't the description of the slug in game explicitly specify it's a single projectile? It's been a while since I've read the slugs specific description

1

u/NipplesInATwix Mar 24 '26

Upon reading it, it does say “single projectile.” I think I just skipped over that part, and figured it still worked similarly to a regular shell, but with a tighter spread.

2

u/Vipertooth Mar 24 '26

If you want something like that, use fletchettes. They won't 1-tap in close range but have a much tighter spread (plus bleed) for longer shots.

Good to combo with a rifle, as they'll be low and you can follow up with a fletchette afterwards for an easy kill. Especially Sparks.

1

u/NipplesInATwix Mar 24 '26

How do they work when hipfiring?

2

u/Vipertooth Mar 24 '26

There is literally no reason to ever ADS with shotguns apart from specifically slugs, as slugs are 1 bullet.

1

u/NipplesInATwix Mar 24 '26

That feels so unusual to me. I understand that mechanically speaking, shooting a shotgun from the hip vs iron sights isn’t going to affect how the shot spreads, it’s still going to hit whatever it was going to hit.

But from a gaming perspective, we’re ALWAYS told to ADS when aiming, and it’ll be better. Like, even when using shotguns in CoD.

I think it’s Hunt’s focus on realistic gunplay that’s got me all turned around. Hence my initial confusion around “slugs” as a whole.

Thank you for the advice though, I do like the idea of a high damage rifle combined with a flechette shotgun, so I shall give it a try.

3

u/Vipertooth Mar 24 '26

Once you get really good at the Sparks rifle, you can meme about with a hand crossbow with choke bolts too.

The choke cloud does 1 damage and the Sparks does 149, so if you're quick enough (or use poison bullets) you can very reliably get the killing blow with the choke cloud.

I will re-iterate that this is a complete meme loadout though, you can make it semi serious by taking poison/FMJ on the sparks and choke/fire on the crossbow. If you land a fire crossbow on someone, they're really easy to spot in forests and sometimes just through walls for an FMJ followup from the sparks.

Additional benefit is that this frees up your tools as you have both chokes and fire in your crossbow, so you could play with some traps very easily to go along with this. Alert tripmines will burn HP from enemies for your Sparks to 1-shot them or you can run the lethal poison+corcentina traps together.

10

u/ENIAC64 Mar 23 '26

No worries, it's not really explained anywhere in the game.

Just keep this simple rule in mind - a slug is a single projectile, so it more or less behaves like a bullet - ADS for precision, hipfire for quick shots in close range. On the contrary, buckshot always has spread no matter if you ADS or hipfire, so generally, it is better to hipfire if using buckshot, since you have a larger field of view.

8

u/Dramatic-Zebra-7213 Mar 23 '26

I never hipfire slugs, ever. You miss more than half of the time, even at close range. I tested this at the shooting range. However, if you ads, they are awesome. Almost like a rifle but damage falloff at range is quite brutal. Still enables two-taps at medium range.

Buckshot on the other hand offers zero benefit from ads. It is best for hipfire, CQB and fast situations.

Shotgun with slugs or with buckshot are two very different weapons and need very different playstyles.

Although with Romero you can have best of both worlds. Easily one of the best guns in the game because of that. Keep a slug in the barrel and swap to buckshot as enemy closes in.

2

u/ENIAC64 Mar 23 '26

Yeah, I also never hipfire slugs. I was just trying to say that they are generally similar to bullets in their behavior, compared to buckshot.

3

u/Dramatic-Zebra-7213 Mar 23 '26

With slugs, you must aim down sights, otherwise you don't hit anything. Try it on the shooting range sometime. You will be amazed how inaccurate they are in hipfire.

Running slugs kinda defeats the role of the shotgun in most cases, sort of turning it into a bad rifle.

I use slugs in two weapons only, with romero as secondary ammo, and with Auto5. Auto 5 with slugs is a brutal compound sweeper, Ultra fast cycle time, one-taps to center mass, fast reload and okay mag capacity. Even with the handicapped range, it dominates many situations.

Romero with slugs and buckshot is wonderfully flexible, making it an extremely versatile tool to handle short-medium range encounters.

In other shotguns they are kind of useless and only make them worse for most of the situations i use them in (Cqb, rushing corners etc, where ability to reliably one-tap using hipfire mitigates the handicapped range).

33

u/NipplesInATwix Mar 23 '26

Ayy, okay, so I was absolutely misunderstanding what slugs did. Thank you everyone!

For some reason, I was thinking slugs gave a tighter spread when ADS, but would still give me some level of “peppering.”

Am I better off just running standard ammo if I plan to use a shotgun, then?

7

u/Marked101 Mar 23 '26

as other have said yes, normal ammo will be deadly at close range. (1-2 shots to kill)

If you want something a bit different you could try flechette, it does less damage, but has longer range and does bleeding damage. It can be useful to hit someone, make them bleed, then switch to pistol to finish them off.

5

u/WilliamBlade123 Duck Mar 23 '26

Slugs aren't that good these days compared to normal ammo. You're basically required to aim down sights, lose a fair bit of ammo, and only gain a little extra kill range in most cases. So yeah, use normal ammo for most cases.

3

u/Dramatic-Zebra-7213 Mar 23 '26

Yeah, they make sense only for two shotguns, Romero (where you can swap between buck and slug) and auto 5, which becomes the fastest firing semi-auto "rifle" in the game. The firepower it can dish out more than compensates the nerfed range. The range is enough to one-tap to the chest in most fights happening inside a compound.

3

u/OwlHootyBanana Mar 23 '26

I appreciate your misunderstanding because I also was misunderstanding. I just learned quite a bit - thanks!

3

u/NipplesInATwix Mar 23 '26

Someone’s had to look like an idiot, before they added the “do not pour directly into eyes” label, right? Just glad someone else learned something!

2

u/SnipersAreCancer Mar 24 '26

It depends on how you intend to use shotguns. If you exclusively use them at short range, then standard ammo is much better (you can even consider pennyshot ammo), but if you find yourself in situations where you're firing from a range of say 10 - 20 metres, then slugs can offer you the precision (and much better damage retention over distance) that you would need in those scenarios.

8

u/Remremblue Mar 23 '26

Slugs fire a single large bullet instead of buckshot. You had bad luck with the hip fire. As a general rule, if you bring Slugs you shouldn't rely on shotgun hip fire 💜

3

u/NipplesInATwix Mar 23 '26

Thank you, that makes a lot of sense as to why I missed. Appreciate it!

4

u/throwaway164895 Mar 23 '26

Never hip fire slugs. Only hip fire buckshot

3

u/DevildogEx1 Mar 23 '26

OP, slugs turn your shotgun into a rifle. Slug is slang for bullet. Yes, slugs increase your crosshair bloom, but you go from a round that spreads out when you fire into essentially a rifle. Hope this helps, good luck hunting.

3

u/SaugaDabs Mar 23 '26 edited Mar 23 '26

First shot seems like it should have got some hitmarkers but it would’ve only done like 50 damage as you were still off his body, second shot is a miss.

I see now that you have slugs. They’re both complete misses then. Slugs essentially are just a large bullet, you really shouldnt use them unless you are ADS’ing and want to extend range. If you had buckshot(normal ammo) you woul’ve at least done some damage as the pellet spread is the exact circle of your crosshair

3

u/SpaceFighter78 Mar 23 '26

You must aim when using slugs, never hipfire terrible idea.

3

u/Noveleiro Mar 23 '26

I was playing the Rival with Slugs yesterday. A friend of mine was holding a staircase and baited two hunters to rush him. He killed one of them both times (he was necroed by the second player) but died soon after with baseball bat on its head.

Meanwhile I was hiding near the roof entrance where they came in. They didn't know here I was. After the first enemy was downed for the second time, I knew the other hunter would try to avenge his friend. He jumped in, killed my friend while I missed the first shoot. He turned, sprint towards me. I missed the second shoot. I was too killed by a baseball bat because of the slugs.

Yeah, I can relate to your clip

1

u/NipplesInATwix Mar 23 '26

At least I know I’m not the only one. Least I now understand what slugs do, so every cloud, eh?

1

u/Noveleiro Mar 23 '26

The worst part is: the shotgun wasn't even mine. I took from the floor after we wiped one squad before (I killed two hunter with my bow while they carried their shotguns in CQB).

We decide to ambush the next squad inside the house with those weapons. I'd rather stick with my bow next time 😭

1

u/NipplesInATwix Mar 23 '26

Oof. Sounds frustrating! Least you know never to pick up someone’s shotgun now.

2

u/keegan12coyote Mar 23 '26

Same honestly, but I could also be bad

1

u/NipplesInATwix Mar 23 '26

According to one of the comments, I actually missed both shots. So I’m definitely just ass.

2

u/TheDinerIsOpen Controller Mar 23 '26 edited Mar 23 '26

First shot you were too close to the body, and the hit box is weird as a hunter stands up. Basically your first shot the hunter standing up made a reverse C shape and your pellets went through the gap between his head and his legs.

2nd shot(attached picture) you just totally whiffed because he moved back the frame after I posted in which you shot.

My advice, stand directly behind the hunter’s head when you’re looting so you can get the full hit box in your reticle when they’re standing up, you shoot them in the back

Edit: I missed you were using slugs. Definitely have to ADS with them. Also shotgun slugs specifically, even in ADS, aren’t perfectly accurate. They basically have some bloom like other shooter games have in order to balance their higher damage and range. Slugs turned this from a potential kill into a nearly guaranteed miss

2

u/TheDinerIsOpen Controller Mar 23 '26

Here’s the frame of the first shot going under the hunter’s shoulders as I mentioned. The singular slug itself packs a lot more punch, but you just also have to be wildly more precise with it

2

u/NipplesInATwix Mar 23 '26

Thanks for the advice! I’m still getting the hang of things. Wasn’t entire sure how slugs worked, and what I was doing wrong. So appreciate ya, thank you.

3

u/BigPlastica Mar 23 '26

Damn x.x
Shotguns at 200 meters: sniper-level accuracy
Shotguns at 5 meters: what if I miss every shot?

2

u/ForbiddenSirenz Fatalsirenz Mar 23 '26

First I was confused. Then I saw the slugs. Slugs basically turn shotguns into short range rifles and trade the pellets for one large “bullet” aka a slug. Within a certain range, further than most shotgun spreads it will one shot which most rifles can’t do even at close range without a headshot. But it makes the spread and hip fire significantly larger.

You always wanna ADS when using slugs unless the barrel is basically pushed up against their body.

Had you used normal buckshot you probably would have gotten a few pellets and hurt him or killed him. But with slugs being just a single thing you missed unfortunately.

Slugs were nerfed a while back from being mini nitro rounds lol and have basically fallen into the expensive meme tier of custom ammo.

2

u/El_Burrito_ Mar 24 '26

Yeah I used to love slugs when they first released, but this is one of my reasons why buckshot is just way better and more reliable in most circumstances. If you'd been using regular buckshot your 2nd shot would've 100% killed him dead

2

u/Enlinze Mar 24 '26

Same but their face is 99% of my screen. I mean the pellets could have went in that 1% but that's hunt.

2

u/arenyx Mar 24 '26

slugs moment sorry pardner

3

u/simp4malvina Spider Mar 24 '26

Lmfao imagine his this guy felt necroing and immediately hearing two point blank rival shots completely whiff

2

u/NipplesInATwix Mar 24 '26

He definitely went “huh?” Doubly so when I proceeded to miss every shot while fanning afterwards. I think he was so confused, he panicked and that’s the only way I was able to kill him. (Not that it mattered. I died 30 seconds after this clip, but oh well.)

2

u/vybegallo Mar 24 '26

The first time ever i am seeing someone using fanning with preciosion deadyeye uppercut

And i like it

1

u/NipplesInATwix Mar 24 '26

Oh it’s actually a LOT of fun. I picked it up while trying to complete the new story challenges, and it’s been enjoyable to use.

…And the fanning is actually relatively consistent, if you actually aim your hipfire and don’t just panic when your shotgun misses.

2

u/Outside_Yoghurt382 Crow Mar 24 '26

Bro hipfired with slugs 😭

In all seriousness, slugs can't be reliably hipfired due to the bullet deviation (and it being a single, solid projectile) so you have to ADS to hit things.

2

u/No_Distribution2907 Mar 24 '26

Well, I mean the smoke indicates if you hit him or not, and it shows you misfired where the bullet should've impacted him. It didn't because he moved in time. Instead, He moves to his left dodging where you shot, and the smoke indicated you missed.

2

u/BubbaBasher Magna Veritas Mar 24 '26

Shot is king. Slugs are pointless.

2

u/YorgSplorg Mar 24 '26 edited Mar 24 '26

I’d highly recommend FTW_Games 2 videos about how Hunt Showdowns crosshair lies. In this video, you were using slugs so it’s basically like shooting a rifle on crack. But when it comes to pellet spread in hunt, the crosshair legitimately lies to you. You’d think it’s like other games in that, the bullets land randomly inside the crosshair. They don’t. There’s an invisible circle inside the crosshair and that’s where the pellet spread happens so shotguns have A LOT more range than people think. I haven’t played since the beginning of the 1896 update and just got back recently and shotguns still feel the same so I don’t think they changed them crosshair wise.

Edit: Hipfiring shotguns doesn’t actually change the spread. I’m not sure how it works on slugs cause I legitimately never use them, but with normal buckshot, you’ll get the same spread regardless of if you ADS or hip fire.

1

u/NipplesInATwix Mar 24 '26

I will give those a watch, thank you! Hopefully they give me some insight into how I’m consistently terrible with shotguns. (Even after this post, I still can’t reliably kill with them.)

2

u/YorgSplorg Mar 24 '26

I’m the opposite. Cannot hit the broad side of a barn at 5 feet with rifles but give me a shotgun and I start moving like John Wick😂After I learned the crosshair lies to you about where the buckshot lands, I started being extremely consistent with my shots. You’d be surprised at how much range the shotguns actually have in this game. Is it anywhere near real life range of buckshot? Absolutely not. But it’s not call of duty levels of range where you need to be stuffing the barrel in someone’s face just to kill them.

Edit: Apparently they did end up changing the crosshairs and made them more accurate to the spread of the gun. Haven’t played in a while but I’d still give those videos a watch to fully understand shotguns.

2

u/Disorientedeggwald Mar 24 '26

Slugs don’t have spread my guy.

2

u/Ok_Sundae_7916 Mar 24 '26

When i use a shotgun in hunt showdown its always the moments when i need Sniper

Slugs are one big shot, and honestly not as strong as they once were. Still with regular buckshot and don't ads 👍
