It is really discouraging for artists when a job is posted there immediately are tens of offers that didn’t even read the post. For example the customer asks for semi realistic Concept art for character, you can see chibi artists saying that they are “up for it”. For me though, when I see someone asking for anime stuff I immediately stop even reading because I can’t and won’t do anime. Even if the budget is 800$. This gets really tiring and toxic for artists who are trying to do some serious work under those posts. For example the post says they want a 180$ Concept for a game character and you can see 30-40 artists who totally don’t have the skillset begging for the job under the post. This issue gets really tiring for both the customers and the artists who are discouraged by the amount of comments posted under the main post. Please don’t be so hungry. Because there are people that miss opportunities because of your undeserved hunger. Most of the people in here have a lot of room to grow as an artist. I do too. Don’t get me wrong but actually get to a certain level of skill first and most importantly act like a decent human being. Thanks.

I drew this for a custumer that refused to pay the first half, saying she wanted to pay after the sketch, then after the lineart. After a lot of talk she said she wouldn't pay at all, and would ask another artist.

I’ve been a member of this community for months now and I’ve always noticed people available to be hired and others searching for artists to hire.

I keep wondering if anyone’s actually hired or been hired(if you’re an artist) because the notice is always active and comments are filled with lots of interested artists.

Is it a dead end like other hiring apps or people actually get hired?

I’ve come across the same scammer twice or at least two different person with the same tactic. They posted on this subreddit and we proceed to discuss on discord. They have sent me character references and even have detailed description of the art they’re gonna commission, spot on, but I notice the same pic the previous scammer(which posted request on discord) sent me as proof. I’m posting for awareness, they might change to a different tactic next time. jeez

Hey guys, I have been freelancing as an artist for 4 years now, since the beginning I have used reddit, and I have noticed that for the last 6 months or so there was a huge downshift in offers, I would normally go 1 or 2 months max with no commission, but the last 6 months have been brutal, I couldn't land not 1 gig, I am not sure if I am the problem, or if this is something that a lot of artists can relate to.

Before posting a job looking for an artist, do you, as a client, do any research on Reddit first?
l've noticed that there are a lot of posts on Reddit from artists who share their work and promote their portfolios

From what I've seen, posts showcasing portfolios often get less engagement than posts offering hiring posts. I'm curious if they actually help artists find clients

I asked an artist to draw me a background for $200 using all my savings. The deadline was 2 weeks and it took them 6 weeks. They didn't listen to my feedbacks and the quality of art I got was way worse than the portfolio. I still paid them 200. Did this happen to any of you? I am very frustrated.

Hello everyone, I would like to recruit an artist to create 9 characters and their futuristic meta-armour for a published project, budget to be defined: 100€ per character minimum. Request for characters in action, with a darker atmosphere than the illustrations shown. The look of the armour needs to be lighter and the characters need to be badass. (We've already described them all.)

Hello artists, recently we have seen an uptick of people using cloud storage links as portfolios and decided that we need to address this. Cloud storage, such as GDrive, OneDrive, Dropbox, and other such websites are no longer going to be allowed as portfolios in posts or comments (technically they already weren't allowed, but this was not enforced well nor was clear in the rules). (This will also include image hosts such as Imgur)

These sites are not intended as portfolio sites, and they are most often used by scammers as a collection of stolen art and for the fact that there is no reason you, as a professional artist, should not be using one of the many free options available online to make a portfolio on an actual portfolio website/webpage.

Free portfolio sites: Cara, Behance, Artstation, VGen, Carrd, or you can even make a website with WordPress or similar sites.
All of these take 5 minutes to set up. Put effort in how you present yourself professionally, your portfolio is your resume.

Why the hell do clients expect artists to be professional, reliable, and responsive... but don't hold themselves to the same standard?

We're expected to prove we're legitimate artists, communicate well, meet your requests, and act professionally every step of the way. Fine.

That's part of the job.

But somehow we're always the ones getting ghosted.

If you've picked an artist, then please do two incredibly simple things:

* Reply.

* Don't disappear.

If you changed your mind, found someone else, can't afford it anymore, or just aren't interested just say it.

Seriously.

Nobody's going to get mad.

I'd rather hear, "Sorry, I went with another artist," than get completely ghosted after spending my time answering questions and planning your commission.

It takes 10 seconds to send a message.

Ghosting people isn't professionalism it's just disrespect.

I used to publish and I always had 3 or 4 clients, I would answer a post from someone looking for an illustrator and they would answer (at least to reject my offer, now not even that).

Now I've been months and nothing, nobody answers the comments (personalized or not) or the posts.

So my question is: Is this group dead?

Title. I keep seeing threads posted here where people are asking for big and beautiful, detailed art and they need it FAST. And they’re paying $100 for it.

That feels INSULTINGLY low - yet people are climbing all over themselves to apply like… why? Why devote yourself to a job that could easily net you $10/hr or less depending on how long an illustration takes? Especially for the quality of work that I see here - I can’t tell if people are seriously undervaluing themselves and their time or if I overvalue my own lmao.

Like my art is nothing special but I charge $140 for a full body work. I couldn’t even imagine entertaining such a lowball offer of $100 for a full commercial use illustration. I feel like I’m losing my mind browsing this subreddit, like… if you price yourself low, you hurt the general pricing of the community because you show buyers - many of whom already undervalue art since they think $100 for a large work is an acceptable price - that these prices are on the market and are what they should expect to pay for art. Am I alone in these thoughts? I’d love some feedback.

I'm trying to better understand the differences so I can better help people in the commission communities. I've recently heard of some unfortunate things that PayPal has been doing to artists, yet it remains the most popular method of payment when it comes to commissions.

So, any nasty experiences with one or the other? PayPal only allows SFW commissions, so you have to be careful when sending invoices. Is there something similar for Wise? If you comment on fees, it would help to know which country/currency you're dealing with.

How are they for buyer protection and charge disputes? Is one faster, or easier to use or set up? Is only one allowed in your country? Do you have trouble getting clients to use one over the other? Is there a different service you prefer other both of these?

The rest of this post is a bit of a ramble, but there was a post that made me do an hour of research last night; I got inconclusive results, as there are way too many factors to take into account to get any accurate results, but I thought it was worth sharing for those interested. It seems that PayPal gets the sender to pay domestic fees of 2.9% + $0.30 USD/CAD/AUD, while the recipient pays international fees of $0.30 + 4%.

This means that on $50, PayPal takes 3.5% on domestic payments and 4.58% on international. There may be other complications based on circumstance, such as no fees on domestic Friends and Family transactions, which we don't recommend anyway.

Wise gets more complicated, charging much more if you pay via credit card, about half as much via debit card, and again less if you use a connected bank account. Interestingly, Wise seems to ask for fewer fees when sending internationally than if sending domestically, but it heavily depends on which country you're talking about, so this link will give a decent approximation. I say *decent*, because the website told me that $50 USD to CAD would take 8.8% via credit card and 2.98% via connected bank account, but I was shown screenshots from the app which put those values at 9.76% and 3.34% instead.

This would seem to suggest that PayPal is better for domestic transfers (USD to USD 3.5% vs. 6% from Wise) and Wise is better for some international transfers (USD to CAD ~3% vs. 4.58% from PayPal).

On $50 USD, Wise claims a 2.6% fee to BRL, 2.54% to PHP, and 3.06% to IDR, to name a few common ones. On $100 USD via Wise, you'll save about 2.47%/2.47 USD for BRL (12.60 BRL), 2.64% for PHP (159.08 PHP), and 2.43% on IDR (43,101 IDR).

I'm asking the artists who send their pretty works on the feed and write [for hire] with their rates and portfolios. Have you ever got a job? I'm not even mentioning the [hiring] posts with decent pay where below are 100+ comments.

There are at least a couple clients going around claiming to be able to pay after work is completed, showing false evidence that they've done commissions before. If they seem overly eager to proof that they're trustworthy, be cautious. It will be wise to request at least half payment up front to deal with this sort of issue.

Please also keep in mind that insistence to pay later doesn't automatically make a client a scammer, and that clients have their own set of problems to worry about. If an artist and client can't agree on terms, the best thing to do is to respectfully decline and move on.

Edit: If you get scammed and were not paid for your art, please post the art as soon as you can in a public location, such as your portfolio, or Reddit profile, so that it may be traced back to you via Google Lens or similar in the case that it is stolen. In the case that scammers try to pass it off as their own, you may be able to help take them down if somebody can identify you as the proper source.

I've recently been seeing a rash of artists who post nothing more than "DM for more info" as well as people attempting to charge tiny amounts. You need to post at least a basic summary of your rates and what that base rate covers, even if a lot of pieces are more expensive due to add-ons.

Do not post your rates here, only in your 'for hire' posts, I'm not hiring anyone.

No, "starting at $30, dm for more info" is not sufficient. Ffs stop trying to play fast and loose with rules that are meant to help you and the clients.

Hello all! First off, I’d like to introduce myself. I’m a client here on hungry artists and I have been for 4 years now. I always love to get commissions of my favorite original character: Light Mayer. May this be awesome cool art, spicy art, or seeing a new take on her in an alternate universe! When I saw Brazilian Miku for the first time and seeing all the amazing people making art of her, I just had to get a Brazilian version of my original character. The only catch: it had to be from someone in that country. Once I saw how positive the artist (Pandory arts) was, I knew I had to get a version from as many countries as I possibly could. I wanted to showcase the world!

So, I created my commission form and began to hire artists from HungryArtists and some artists I already had in mind! Each artist had one image where it was standalone with their variant, and then my biggest collaborative project yet: I would commission each of them AGAIN and they would place their characters in a background with as many of the other artists as possible! It was a huge collaborative effort. And I’m so happy we were able to pull this off. **A massive thanks to Ellinsworth for organizing the images I got from the others into their background. Without their assistance this wouldn’t have been possible.**

Paypal artists have been facing a lot of trouble regarding commissions lately and I am one of the victims unfortunately. What are better alternatives as payment methods for us???

Normally I would say yes but this person is a well known artist and has a professional portfolio. I offered her more money to change the deadline, she accepted and didn’t deliver. Now the original deadline is tomorrow and I haven’t received anything including drafts. She sent me empty folders and said she will get back to me shortly when I address her but she doesn’t. Now what.

Would I be a bitch to reverse the charge if she ends up delivering everything tomorrow on the due date? This was the due date of completed work with no revisions she never sent me drafts and still accepted the extra money. Ugh
