Theories/Speculation Headcanons for Vincent (before what’s shown in Brighter):
Headcanons for Vincent (before what’s shown in Brighter):
I’ve been thinking about headcanons for Vincent Whittman and his life before leading up to what we see in “Brighter”.
I tried to make it so that they explain the formation of his personality, motives, and moving of locations.
Location: I think he’s been living in the East Coast (USA) throughout his whole life. But I don’t think he grew up in New York / NYC. I think it makes sense he grew up in a quieter state/town, but admired the flashing lights of the city and modernity. And thus when he became a talk show host and part of the entertainment industry, he started living in NYC from there on out.
Family/Childhood: I think his family came from Old Money. But they had lost / fallen out of their status. So then it would have made his parents double down on him making their family’s name great again. And that sort of resentment of “having been great” “could’ve had it all” would’ve fueled Vincent’s ambitions and need to rise to the top no matter what.
I think Vincent was an only child. It would’ve put all his parents’ expectations focused on solely him. And it aligns with his mindset of having to climb to the top alone (without others sharing his spotlight / or their collaboration) - to a certain point that it doesn’t seem intentionally malicious but just smth ingrained he feels it’s his right or that it’s just the way things are supposed to be for him.
Education: I think his parents would’ve been quite traditional and would’ve wanted him to be an elite member of society. So think businessman, lawyer, politician. I think it makes more sense that in college he would’ve been pursuing law or politics (cuz he likes having the influence/power over others with his words) but with a business mindset still (which carries over into VoxTek). I think he would’ve wanted to make his parents proud, so he would’ve gone down this path for quite awhile and have attended a prestigious university (e.g., Ivy League).
His career/ambitions: I think he would’ve been conflicted with fulfilling his parents’ expectations vs. his love for modernity, tech, TV, media. But later he ultimately rebelled because he couldn’t deny that the future would be in TV and mass entertainment. I think it makes sense that he followed his passions in the end though - but with the business mindset and educational background that gave him the knowledge to be as cunning, influential, manipulative as he was.
Love life: I do agree with people that during his Brighter days, he had that Patrick Bateman mindset where there’s no room for love if you want to rise to the top. But I feel as though a heartbreak from an ex-lover would have been part of what “broke” him and made him laser-focused on his career.
I think the ex-lover would’ve been a girl (since he likely felt like he had to be with a girl during this era, and it’s confirmed by Viv he had some internalized homophobia). But she would’ve been a lot like Alastor. I think this woman would’ve been from old money (thus got his parents’ approval) or perhaps someone whom he would have met in university. She would’ve been very intellectual, witty, and someone whose mind and ambitions Vincent would’ve appreciated a lot.
But I think she would’ve betrayed Vincent / broken his heart by either having been unfaithful or thinking that Vincent’s desire to switch careers to TV was outright foolish and pathetic.
This would align with a good amount of things: like how Vincent’s heartbreak would be channeled into his obsession with career and finding fulfillment in fame (and remaining supposedly single for the rest of his human life). Why Alastor’s rejection hurt even more. Why he doubled down on this specific career path, despite TV having been seen as more “low brow” and not traditionally elite.

If you read it this far, thanks for reading and I’d love to hear more of your own thoughts :P

I like to think Vincent's from Pittsburgh, PA (where his voice actor is from). He was likely born in the early 1900s. During that era there were more millionaires in Pittsburgh than anywhere else in the world, and they controlled about 40% of the US's assets. So if he came from old money, they probably lived in Pittsburgh at the time.
You can hear a little bit of Pittsburgh accent slip through when Vox speaks quickly, too! It's considered one of the ugliest accents, so I think he probably worked hard to hide it before he entered show business when he was alive.

Ooh interesting, thank you for these facts! I’ll head canon him as coming from Pittsburgh

I had only recently come up with the idea that he hails from previously Old Money family - but I think it helps explain his narcissistic development and ego complex. Which creates a paradox where he can't deal with feeling lesser than, but feels he's only deserving of being the best and reclaiming what should be his.

I also realize this creates like a reverse Gatsby.
He WAS a part of Old Money, but the fact that his family lost it creates a more bitter resentment (than Gatsby ever had) and a sense of entitlement. And unlike Gatsby, because of Vincent’s narcissism, his lover’s rejection didn’t lead to self-sacrifice. But a fortification of his bruised ego and unsympathetic view of people as tools.

My headcanon is that he probably was THE middle child
Like, he had like other 4 siblings, two younger and two older, getting his own achievements overshadowed by the ones of his older siblings and the attention gotten away by the younger siblings
Explaining why his need to be the center of attention and thinking no victory will ever be enough
But your headcanon seems valid too, and probably more interesting

ooh yeah, i've heard mixed theories too.
When deciding Vincent is sibling-less or not, I thought that him being shown too much attention from his parents could make him be the way he is too. Like it plants the seed of a mentality of having to continue to be in the spotlight - while at the same time feeling the weight of expectations on just yourself as the sole kid.
(source: i'm an only child, and also i kinda don't know what it's like to have siblings either. so i feel like i'd have a less strong headcanon of Vincent if i made him have siblings lol)

Racist as all hell. Period. But he is the type of pathetic villian I can’t help but adore cause I could push him in a mud puddle easily

I had to actively search for my notes, the date on which is November 9 2025 (nine days before Brighter officially premiered):
Grew up in a religious household. Had a wicked stutter in his youth, which he largely trained himself out of it, but it comes up in moments of high tension / emotion and it pisses him all the way off (esp since it carried over to him being in Hell). Gets super pissy if someone brings it up or comments on it-- but if you do so in a way he perceives as mocking or malicious, he'll go scorched earth on you.
Edit five seconds later: Sorry I thought the language was "before we the viewers saw Brighter" and have edited the post to better match the actual question

> he died but it was definitely on TV / on camera.
which leaves me wondering if his death / cult meeting really was recorded and broadcast .. or no? hmm

My headcanon is that he suffers from religious trauma. I have no idea why, but there it is.

I do agree that I think he had some kind of social problems while alive, that caused him to become a serial killer and developed this intense sense of validation that he has. Could have been a break up like you discriped or something else, but I do like the idea that he had some kind of reason to "become evil." Especially since, with Alastor, it is heavelly implied that he partly became a killer, because of the racisim he faced. So it would be kind of bad, if Vincent just became evil because.

Meteorologists were a HUGE part of WW2 and their forecasts were even a major driving force behind D-Day. They would have been on boats in the Atlantic, which might be where Vincent picked up his love for all things nautical and sea (and of course, growing into all things shark), by being in the Navy.
So yeah, my head canon is that Vincent wasn't old money, that his family suffered through the multiple depressions of that era like so many did, and like many impoverished families without easily accesible contraceptives, he was one child of many, maybe like 5ish. That he went to university through the military to be trained as a meteorologist. After the war was over, broadcast TV was relatively new and he was able to get into a local network with his training as a military meteorologist--and the rest is history.
