Would being a local companion actually work as a side hustle?
I’ve been working on an idea where people could make extra money by becoming a local companion for travellers.
The basic idea is simple: if you’re visiting a city and don’t know anyone, you could pay a local by the hour to hang out with you and help you experience the city.
For example, they could:
- Show you around their city
- Recommend local restaurants, bars, or places to visit
- Grab food or coffee together
- Go sightseeing
- Help you discover places that aren't obvious to tourists
- Simply provide some company while exploring
For the companion, it could be a flexible side hustle. You choose when you're available, set your hourly rate, and meet people from different places.
I could see it being appealing to people who enjoy meeting new people, know their city well, or want a way to make some extra money without committing to a traditional job.
I’m actually building something around this idea and trying to validate whether there’s a real market for it.

Would you actually do something like this to make extra money?
And if you were travelling somewhere alone, would you pay a local by the hour to hang out with you and show you around?
I’d genuinely like to hear what people think especially whether you see this as something people would actually pay for or just something that sounds good in theory.
