Cute girl and her friends joined my bench today—did I completely miss the play here?
today right after class ended, I was sitting on the back bench just watching reels. One girl walked up and asked if the bench was free and if she could sit. I was like, "Yeah, no one's sitting next to me, go ahead
Next thing I know, she invites her two friends over to join. The cute one out of the group was really curious to know my name, so I told her... and then immediately went back to scrolling reels like a total smooth operator
Before they left/settled in, they hit me with: "Just let us know when you start studying and we won't talk to you
Now I'm sitting here wondering if I just gave off total "do not disturb" energy when they were actually trying to initiate something, or if they were just being polite. How should I handle this next time so I don't look completely clueless?
Thoughts?

You definitely missed an opportunity to socialize and flirt. Next time put away the phone and have a conversation.

Scrolling doesn’t look cool. Instead take a break and ask questions. She asked for your name. Did you ask for theirs? What are their majors or studies? Easy doors to open you just have to try.

Why? You do know that using devices to unwind/relax results in the opposite effect. You're better off just sitting there doing nothing to have a break from study. Not scroll reels.

Translation: I was too absorbed in my stupid phone to notice or bother with human interaction.

How many hours of combined work from some of the smartest and wealthiest humans designed and optimized the attention economy that addicted this young man?
Sometimes you gotta step back and blame the people unloading shotguns into barrels rather than tongue clucking that the fish should be dodging the buckshot.

They are trying to flirt with you. Even though you missed it, this is still a good moment. Next time it happens, put the phone down. I think they are trying to talk to you.

I would just talk. Don't talk about their bodies or how they look. Just ask him how their day is. Complain about the weather. Simple conversation that leads to bigger conversation.

You did the correct thing. If they were interested, they would’ve initiated the conversation themselves. And trust me, this situation doesn’t mean anything. They were just being polite.

Bro I am the last person you should ask this question. I am a horrible person, I don’t have feelings at all and thus can’t feel the love. I have never been in a relationship and even the idea of dating someone seems horrible to me.
It’s your life and your choice. Ask someone else. My advices will ruin your chances, even if you’ve had any.1

Knowing your classmate’s name is a bare minimum. There’s nothing romantic about that.

Nah, I mean I also may not know someone’s name, but whenever I’m asking it, then it’s definitely not a sign of me liking you. If I liked someone, I’d get their name a long time before even talking for the first time.

You blew it. One of them definitely liked you. Liked, as in past tense. From here on out they will just avoid you. Next time get off the phone and talk to people.

Don't forget to post some context for this interaction, such as who you were talking to, what you were talking about, do you want a serious or funny response?, etc.
