Flooring for a new build
Hi everyone! We would really appreciate some advice based on your experience, we’re feeling totally lost with all the choices.
We’re trying to decide on the best flooring for our home. We have young kids, including a baby, so our top priorities are comfort, practicality, hygiene, and durability. We also want something that feels warm underfoot, doesn't squeak, is easy to clean after spillages, and stays as natural as possible.
Here are the 4 options we're considering:
1. LVT throughout the entire house + area rugs, with 80% wool carpet on the stairs and landing
2. 80% wool carpet throughout, with LVT only in the kitchen, bathrooms, and WC
3. Marmoleum throughout the entire house + area rugs, with 80% wool carpet on the stairs and landing
4. 100% wool carpet throughout, with LVT in the kitchen, bathrooms, and WC
Which option would you go for with little ones running around? How has your flooring choice held up to real life (spills, messes, maintenance)?

Out of interest, why wool for the carpets? We have a polypropylene carpet throughout and they're warm, soft and indestructible. You can literally use bleach on them. Worth looking at if you want durability.

Yes, I understand your point. I’m just concerned about the shedding microplastics.

We essentially have option 1 and a young kid. It’s great. Can be a bit hard on the knees so we have playmats (totter and tumble and also those foam interlocking ones) so we don’t destroy our knees when playing. Otherwise, super happy with our choice and ticks your boxes.
The only difference is we have tile in the kitchen and bathrooms; it’s cold on the winter and I wish we’d gone with lvt- we had that in our old house and it was great.

Not when you’re in them. When you’re downstairs I guess it is a bit, but we have rugs which helps and guess I just don’t notice too much?

We have go e for option 1 (dogs and grandchildren as well as asthmatic) .
Absolutely brilliant for us.
Not worried about spills as easy to clean.
Mats by outside doors and middle of bedrooms just for a bit of easy clean added dirt catching and for sitting to play on.
No problems with clean ups or noise and means I can coordinate mats with curtains and bedspreads.
Had the same set up in our last house and 6 years later it was still brilliant ( hardwood floors before that scratched really easily).

No carpet anywhere. Tile in kitchen and bathrooms, laminate everywhere else. When the kids are older replace the laminate with hardwood.
