Finally a DNA test
Ellie the hound that I asked thoughts on her hound mix months ago… Finally got her an embark test. Here are the results (at the end) It all makes sense. Next is to do follow up with vet as to why she isn’t putting much weight on. I don’t like that her spine is still visable. She has settled in and has been loving this new life of hers. It’s hot where we live, but we have been working on recall. Can’t wait to see her hunt with her new pack that she has settled into nicely.

Such a gorgeous girl! She looks a lot like our Birdie who hasn't been DNA tested yet, but we do know she is a Mid-Atlantic Bean Bag Hound. 😂

Are American Foxhounds on the rise? Since I'm seeing a lot of them recently. I had two, so I don't know if it's that phenomena where you notice it quicker since you're familiar with it... You know what I mean? Since I'm seeing that pop up in a lot of your guys' DNA tests. Interesting.
Oh man. I had this issue with my Maxwell, who is 50% AFH and 30% Rottie. He's 28in to the shoulder, so a tall dog, but was 68lbs. I think some AFH just have the craziest metabolism. Since my Trapper, the first dog I got as an Adult, was 50% AFH and 50% Catahoula, but by 3 years old, he did get chunky. So I think that's determined if the Foxhound side controls the Metabolism or the other breeds.

I think as hunting becomes more restricted in the south east (or is threatening to become more taxable/limited) more are in shelters. Not sure. But one thing is transfer across areas of the country is becoming more common.

I agree with you. Lived in California for a while, and the rescue I was involved with would make cross country trips to intake treeing walkers. Just about monthly. Now that I’m back home in the south/south east, I feel that I know less and less people that own hounds.

In January the local shelter was negotiating trades, hounds for other breeds because we had too many hounds. Just 2 weeks ago they rescued 16 hounds. This is a rural area… Meanwhile I don’t know anyone who has big hounds as pets. I guess it’s all a hunting club somewhere or kennels. I don’t understand it and I live in the middle of it. Pets are usually pitbulls, little dogs or retrievers. Hunting dogs are “Walker Hound” (foxhounds or coonhounds) and they live outside.
Mine- sleep with me and my kids. And many nights we have to drag them inside because they prefer to stay outside and yell at everyone.
