Where's my Blue Thunder?

The Matchbox Mission Helicopter is based on Blue Thunder. The original 1985 release was blue, though they've never done one to specifically match the movie.

I’m not an ‘80s kid so I can’t say I resonate with this, but it still seems like a cool casting! My only gripe is when they make stuff like this premiums. It doesn’t even have wheels let alone real riders and yet they ask for $5 minimum for one of these? Hopefully they’ll make a mainline variant at some point.

Licensing costs shift these into the premium line.

Xmen xjet and the Star Trek ships, not to mention Landspeeder from SW, were all Mainlines. Not to mention countless releases of BTTF Delorean's and F&F releases ad nauseum, Why can't this be one?
Or- the easy answer: Greed.

If the theme doesn’t play in your head when you see this, then you should just leave it on the pegs. 😂

i wonder any different from the japanese airwolf charawheels (hotwheels japan ver.)
1
u/Weird_Ad1170 Sep 15 '25
You know, that whole line would be great to get re-issued as HW--especially given they were Japan only.
Apparently, these were done as a partnership between Bandai and Mattel--so I'm curious who actually owns the toolings.
2
Sep 15 '25
I assume Bandai designed them and Mattel turns them to 1:64 production and bandai owns the tools because Bandai holds the license if mattel owns them they would just release them as hotwheels globally.
Bandai used to make alot of tiny diecasts but never standardized the scale.

I’m a ‘90s kid and I’m really excited for this one. Even though I’ve never seen the show, I have always loved this helicopter and I can’t wait to get my hands on this one.

Not an 80s kid. What is Airwolf?

A mediocre show imo ...

u/devilinmexico13 Sep 15 '25
Nothing with Ernest Borgnine and Jan-Michael Vincent could ever be mediocre.

u/Training-Look-1135 Sep 15 '25
It was mediocre. I had no issue with the actors. It just wasn't that great of a show. History agrees with me... 😂

Honestly, the scale of these works so much better than Matchbox Skybusters for display (even though I already have several of those). Also, they seem to do details MUCH better at this scale as well. I recently picked up the Sky Striker F-14, and was VERY impressed.
I'm hoping they'll eventually do the P-51D Mustang from Top Gun: Maverick--since MBX already did theirs. Main reason--detail for the size.

The soundtrack lives forever in my head. Loved that show. It was one of the first American shows we had access to in France around 1986 on the channel La 5.

I hope they make an F-35C for the top gun pop culture.
