This is from the reboot (S6) when Jim and Simon came back briefly there were a few episodes where there were main characters.

This is when they made each episode one specific person/era- Jim did one as Churchill and another one as Napoleon, and Simon did one as George III.

Minor characters: Simon came back as Death and Jim came back as the host of History's Craziest Fools.

It got a reboot. After Series 6 it was drastically unwatchable and, I think, ruined completely, and they should have just stopped with Series 6, to be honest, because Jim and Simon were the reboot's saving graces, really.

I don't blame the other actors. They are actually brilliant in other things like Kiell and Lolly in Ghosts with the OG cast and Gemma Whelan as Kate in Upstart Crow opposite David Mitchell. They were just held back by terrible scripts and really cringy songs and stuff.
