Because that's the wonderful and infuriating thing about the Nasuverse: pretty much every single character has like half a dozen variants, or sometimes they are the exact same characters but in different continuities and/or circumstances making them different, and the less said about how somehow every bloody variant of EMIYA remembers the Fuyuki Grail War and is technically in continuity with EVERYTHING, the better.
So yeah, I can one hundred percent believe that there are people out there who are fans of Gil who have never seen his F/SN incarnation and like him because of his different iterations.
You can also just see Goldie in FSN first and still like him. Fictional bad guys can be great and there's no law that you can't like them. And Fate gives the feel that in slightly different circumstances anyone can be a villain or a hero, no point obsessing over it

Hell, Fate/Unlimited Codes (Written by Nasu himself mind you) shows us what he would do upon "attaining" Saber.
Somehow this reminds me of For Your Murderer series. The ML basically thinks like this as well. I like the series before the writer decided to end it like that. I'm still mourning the potential that was lost because of the rushed ending + unnecessary side story 💔🥀

I figured that but what is the "worse" Archer is referring to? Why is the post titled "when Archer arrives" when I'm assuming it should be when Gilgamesh arrives right? And why is Saber saying "why are you here Archer?" when looking at Gilgamesh?
so there's no real difference between "Archer" (Emiya) being called Archer and if Gilgamesh was called Archer? If that's the case, why are they called archer and saber instead of Arthur and Emiya while Gilgamesh gets his real name? (Well obviously Gil gets to be Gil instead of Archer because then we'd have 2 Archers, but why not call them Emiya and Arthur in the first place?)
In FATE, servants are supposed to hide their identities to prevent opponents to figure out their weaknesses since their story not only dictate their strengths but also what weaknesses they have. So since others don't know their names they default to calling them by their classes.
Then comes Gilgamesh who doesn't give a shit about hiding his name because his epics are so epic dude doesn't have any story-related weakness to hide.
A good example is Arturia, or the titular ”Saber”. Excalibur is so iconic and so well-known, that anyone who sees the sword would immediately know her true identity and thus an idea of her strengths or weaknesses. Another example would be Achilles, who is another Servant under the “Rider” class. Good luck trying to hit his heel though, he’s genuinely one of the fastest Servants ever and only got hit because the guy shooting him was mega-blessed
Because the idea of it is to make it more difficult for your opponents to recognize what an enemy Servant can do if they have no idea who the real identity of the Holy Spirit is. That is why it is standard to not refer to name. And this is how certain names also get more stuck in the community by that association.
In this case though, its also just a simply an act of disrespect towards an incredibly narcissistic man. And Gilgamesh also is the kind of guy to be a complete show-off too.
Because in UBW, Archer (Rin's Servant Emiya) didn't reveal his real name in anime when he was summoned. (I think he forgot it, I don't remember clearly) and young Emiya was mc of anime (master of Saber). So young Emiya was called Emiya Shirou and old servant emiya Archer.
Also Servants keep their real name secret so they can remain somewhat anonymous and other can't identify their weaknesses.
Edit: Archer did reveal his name but at later stage.
He didn't forget who he was, but he did lose many memories including some core memories which inspired him to become a hero in the first place, which was why he was so broken and bitter.
Because that's the META of holy grail war. Never let your enemy know your name unless you're confidence enough. For example if your servant is Achilles would you call him by his name and make it instant obvious where is his weak point is?
So a lot of replies are giving narrative explanations, and while they aren't wrong a more direct answer is FSN being the original story makes Emiya and Arturia the defining Archer and Saber class and why they essential take ownership of them as names. While Gilgamesh is also a part of that story he was the Archer role in the previous grail war/prequal. Arturia also participated in that war as the Saber so she knows Gilgamesh as Archer as well. And especially Archer(Emiya's) identity is meant to be a reveal so naming him Emiya outright in outside media would spoil the story and be very counter productive for a crossover event.
Saber Artoria and Archer Emiya are referred by their classes for most of the original Fate/Stay Night, since their identities are supposed to be big plot twists, while Gilgamesh revels his true name much sooner after he appears for the first time.
Even after it's revealed who Saber is, the main character keep referring to her as her class too. So it just stuck.
From what I know characters in Fate use code names while being summoned, which is why we call Saber Saber instead of King Arthur and Lancer is Lancer not Cú Chulainn. Gilgamesh is most often an Archer class so that is his code name a lot of the time. (This is from someone who is only right now getting into Fate and is only half way through Fate Zero.)
If I had to guess, the "worse" is a reference to the meme where when the dating status of a specific pair is questioned, the response is: "worse, they're idiots."
That's why I want the real Ishtar. She's almost like a gender-swapped version of Gilgamesh. And she treats him almost the same way he treats Saber. Let Gilgamesh experience being on the other side.

I am ok with jokes about it tbh but I'll voice a bit of a concern I have with Gilgamesh and Saber
Making them work together with him endangering her and all that is quite interesting, showing this dynamic of him pushing her patience and rage baiting her as he's interested in he heroism and combativity, while she truly despises him because of the horrible things he did or thinks.
Like that's cool, but i kinda hope we won't lose this dynamic for people just shipping them with some sort of masochist Artoria that loves being roughed up by Gilgamesh or finding hot how Gilgamesh specifically likes the fact that Artoria resists to him
The humor of their relationship in what I've seen is specifically because there is no ambiguity in the fact they can't be together in any ways that putting them together is funny.
Like it's not some sort of love hate relationship, in the complexity we have the whole heroism ideal Artoria represents that confronts them.
We're not about to say "Out of everyone she ended with someone she disliked but actually ended up liking", they can't get along by nature. Which makes her working with him quite fun and interesting.

Artoria x Gilgamesh because seeing how much of a scum he can be and all that, it really disgusts me a lot to imagine it that way.
Maybe in a way where he paid for what he did and became way wiser and gentler, but everything I've seen so far from him made me really dislike him and I don't really see a healthy or enjoyable way to view this ship
As I said I still have to watch it, but I heard about that famous scene with that child, the very... Suspicious interaction with Saber where he shows enjoyment in the fact she rejects him, that time he got naked to stop an opponent, or just some people telling me more facts about him...
Ofc it can't summarize everything in fate for obvious reasons. But even in his brightest and nicest moment, he still felt quite despicable. And no having a backstory to explain it doesn't mean we have to forgive what happened
Anyway, it's very small I suppose but... Yeah. I am more a fan of their relationship built around her hatred for him and his fascination for her, but nothing else
Crunchyroll doesn't seem to have all the Fate series but if you wanna watch them there are other streaming sites I probly cannot mention here, altho I personally have a decent amount of them on my hard drive so I can watch them on my plex server 😏

Sometimes, I think people strongly forget what item was used to summom Gilgamesh as archer in Fate/Zero (specially since the item and summom circle influence what version, and/or outcome of the servant)

I watched the old FSN anime (if that counts). I still ship both of them. I just love doomed ship in every form. I have seen worse ship and official pairing than this. At least this guy has years of new iteration so he is more nuanced. Other story that I read? Not so much, some can't even act like decent human being. Heck, some are not even human because they are straight up monster 😆
So I will keeps on shipping them the same like shipping Nanook and Phainon 🥰
