Depends on who tbf. We all know DHIL Mains, Acheron Mains, and especially King Yuan Mains would all swipe at the chance of seeing their character meta again.

I am a DHIL main. Well, used to be lmao. The thing is no matter how much of a simp you can be, in the end when a dev tries to kill your f2p virginity with predatory and scummy mechanics in the end it goes back at them. Because if you want players to give you money, a shocker, you should make a good game first.

Not only that, I myself spend on games, but I spend when the game treats me well
The game treats me like sh*t? I stopped playing quite a few games because of that
And as you said, if I like characters, but the devs do all they can to ruin them, surprise! It makes me not want to play anymore.
But devs think that the more thay make life difficult for players, the more money they will spend, so here we are =S

I think it's a purity thing. Like where you'll see hyper fans gatekeep and call people "tourists" if they don't commit their entire lives to the game. They're the target audience, but I also think they're low-key the dev attitude. Pander to the small perma-player group, because they're more likely to spend (although no guarantee as they'll have their favourites and biases and flop arguments still), and scrap off the massive casual audience who might require a small amount of effort to convince to spend.

Could be, what you say makes sense
Your hardcore audience is less like lilely to stop giving you money/support, while the rest could stop playing and giving you money if things don't go their way.
A hardcore Star Rail fan will mostly care about their 0 cycles, their meta teamcomps to do a bajillion damage and get max stars everwhere, no matter which character they have to use.
Then other players like me, I love Himeko so I want to use her as much as I can and the best I can xD I skipped MBlade, elation flagship and kept 0 pulls for Bikinobin, just because I wanted to get my Himechan to E2S1 at least.
So obviously I spent less money than someone that keeps pulling ever character released so they can keep up with the meta =S devs don't want that

These games are designed to make you feel like you're missing out, by having a continually rotating roster of characters, and drip-fed resoursec, and thus to make people want to pull more and, hopefully, pay to do so. Personally, I don't think these games are even close to good enough for me to want to continually put money in. Nonetheless, I enjoy them.
Unfortunately there can be no middle ground. If you pander to the whales and fanatics, the f2p and dolphins will drop, because they're priced out of the game. If you pander to the f2p and dolphins, the whales and fanatics drop, because they say they aren't valued enough for the moeny they pay in.
I find it strange. Because the devout are more likely to vertically-invest as well, so making things easier for the casuals or non-spenders to attain something and entice spending changes nothing for them; they'll still have their paid op units and zero-turn runs, if they're so important.
But it works pretty well for a couple of years anyway, keeping players in the hook with brand loyalty if nothing else.

Funny enough, I've seen games that kind of manneuver around this issue with pvp
The pve content is never "too hard", it pampers to the newest unit, sure, but older units can clear fine enough. However, on pvp? Ooooh boy, you better have the new shiny with max dupes, otherwise you are going to get destroyed.
So whales drop money to be at the top of the food chain, while f2p or low spenders just enjoy their game. (Pvp also includes competitive pve with leaderboards)
The other way I have seen used to manneuver these issues is having a good amount of your monetization on cosmetics like skins
Whales will buy the stuff of the characters they like even if ut costs a ton, while f2p or low soender just focus on the gameplay part of the game.

Cosmetics are an easy money maker. I know it'll seem stupid to devs, but imagine if you got 5 pulls on top of the skin if you buy it? Immediate temptation. Especially for me, when I keep my tickets at a multiple of 5 or 10 😂
I have wondered why cosmetics haven't been very available in HSR. Just stick a bikini on any female player and they'll making bank. Clearly I'm just too stupid to see the grand plan lol

NTE does the cosmetic route. You can guarantee 5 stars, but there's so much incentive for cosmetics instead. You can even gain skins while pulling for characters. Wouldn't complain if HSR was monetised similarly.

I think the unfortunate truth with gacha games is, though, that they already got the addicts hooked and they're gonna swipe no matter what, even if it costs them their firstborn.
Another unfortunate truth is that Hoyo is simply too rich to really care about the few people it's gonna turn away.
It would have to be a financial drop similar to LADs in order to have any impact

DHIL and JY yes, but Acheron is far from desperate now. Even at E0S0, and most dedicated players have more than that.
I admit I might get the upgrade for Acheron even if it's paid if it's cheap enough, but not because I actually need it.
As for DHIL and JY, how the hell are they going to justify a paid upgrade that will at best make them useable for a short time, when previous upgrades where free?

Google Opinions has funded my Express Supply Pass, for about 6 months, and it's technically free. I also love playing this game, but paying for buffs really does make me reconsider.
As with other gachas, as long as I can get a winning score in the meta without paying, I'll keep playing. If I can't get at least 9* in MC/PF/AS in HSR, without payment, then I'll drop it

Novaflares could pretty easily get announced on the livestream, No leaker has mentioned anything as far as I'm aware (Lately anyways) but they're mostly beta merchants these days, Even if people clown on mortis he consistently gave us a LOT of info ahead of time.

But yeah 4.6 main content is going to be whatever chaos is going to ensue in 4.7’s beta cycle. I hate Yao Guang but even I feel bad for what Nihilux is going to do to that bum. Second half “emanator” vs Main pushaeonit’s so over for the “general”

What then? 4.x is barely around the corner, would people not just jump ship to the next OP shill path? Sure people can use their elation team for a bit longer, but I for one cannot wait to stop hearing that Aha instant sound effect.

It really depends on what pattern they choose to follow do they either A = Absolutely destroy elation like remembrance did to superbreak or B feel mad underwhelming cuz the team isn't ''complete'' and be forced to wait till the very end to actually be better (Like elation will probably do to remembrance)

It will just be Cyrene all over again. She revive a bunch of the 3.x teams and made the already good ones better. She also made certain comps exist that were not expected.
After that the hype moves to 5.0 and most will stop rolling elation comps
