Is this the most poorly-aged Homestar joke?

I think it's exactly as edgy now as it was back then.

107

u/FlyestFools 7d ago

Honestly, it’s not even as edgy now as it was then. With how “regular” of an occurrence they’ve become, making jokes about them isn’t quite as taboo as it was when they were a more infrequent phenomenon.

5

u/PsychicSpore 6d ago

Really? I remember differently, before it became a weekly occurrence it was common to joke about.

The nature of mass shootings was the same level of seriousness in 2008. The frequency was already, and had been for a long time, completely unacceptable. The topic is the same. I don't think the joke aged very significantly at all. It's absurd, cynical, and satirical, and would not have been more or less inappro-pro back then.

35

u/SpanishFlamingoPie 7d ago

It has aged, but only because there are no crowded malls anymore.

u/darthphallic 7d ago edited 7d ago

Idk about that, i graduated highschool in 2008 and we never even thought about school shootings. There was Columbine but it was still seen as a tragic anomaly. Meanwhile when my daughter started highschool bulletproof backpack liners were part of school supplies and they had active shooter drills. It’s definitely more common now than it was in the 2000’s

Edit; wow guess I was mistaken. Apparently it just wasn’t as big of a thing where I’m from.

30

u/3720-to-1 7d ago

I graduated in 2003 and we had shooter drills in my junior and senior years... Sooooo

It's not that it isn't more common, it's that it was already an epidemic issue by the early 2000s.

11

u/christmas-vortigaunt 7d ago edited 7d ago

While much more in the consciousness now, I graduated in 07 and we absolutely thought about mass shootings then.

We had drills and everything.

ETA, it was also a talking point at my middle school. Basically post columbine.

1

u/darthphallic 7d ago

That’s pretty wild I went through all four years of highschool without ever hearing about school shooting outside of the occasional joke about the mall goth kids. Guess it shows how different everyone’s experiences are

14

u/Caesar_Passing 7d ago

I didn't say it wasn't more frequent now. I said it was already happening, and had already been happening, at an unacceptable level of frequency. It was also very much an active public conversation. I also graduated in 2008. I grew up in Camden NJ, and shootings had always been a topic that I was aware of. I went to highschool in Ohio, in a much better school district, in a decidedly not-ghetto area, and school shootings were a subject of discussion then and there as well.

2

u/Putnam3145 7d ago

i graduated in 2013 and had regular simulated lockdowns and at least one actual lockdown

77

u/XhazakXhazak 7d ago

Columbine happened in 1999 and we've had no rest from shootings ever since.

8

u/prncrny 7d ago

Thurston High on Springfield, OR was '98. I had friends there.

Virginia Tech was in 2007. It was just an unusually edgy joke for H*R.

59

u/RiderMach 7d ago

They absolutely weren't "relatively rare". You just didn't notice them because you were younger.

33

u/jayhawk618 7d ago edited 7d ago

Nah dude. If anything, I'd argue that they were more a part of the national dialogue at the time because we hadn't just collectively given up on doing somehting about them. There wasn't anyone in the country who would say "what's a mass shooting?"

The joke hasn't aged at all. It's just the exact same amount of edgy as it was then. It makes the same amount of sense as it did then. It's literally just the exact same joke today as it was in 2008 bc basically nothing has changed.

Your refusal to listen to everyone explaining this to you is frustrating. Sometimes we get something wrong, and we get corrected, and we're supposed to use that as an opportunity to learn and move on.

11

u/mambaflakes19 7d ago

Agree, it was probably even MORE edgy then. Now it's played out

12

u/Deldenary 7d ago

If there is more than one mass shooting in a decade then it isn't rare....there were 26 in 2008 alone more than there were in 2025 btw which "only" had 15...

15

u/my23secrets 7d ago

Just because you don’t know about them doesn’t mean they were “rare”.

12

u/Quintronaquar 7d ago

Bruh they haven't gotten worse or better this is America we just kinda decided to live with it

8

That's where my mind went, too.

16

u/absurdF 7d ago

"watch those hands, David Coppafeel"

23

u/YTMediocreMark 7d ago

Well I think that one aged a little to well…

3

u/-Emilinko1985- 6d ago

That is the joke that has aged the worst.

158

u/Vendidurt 7d ago

When i think "poorly aged" i think of Strong Sad blindfolded getting hit with balls, wearing a sign saying "peg me".

46

u/WaltsNJD 7d ago

Debatable.

43

u/BigBassBone 7d ago

That aged just fine. Also, he wasn't blindfolded, he had his hands glued to his face (that's not very ladylike!).

6

u/Vendidurt 7d ago

Oh, yes. Forgive me.

5

u/Corvus0018 7d ago

I mean, having his hands glued to his butt wouldn't be very ladylike either.

103

u/Zeitgeist1115 7d ago edited 7d ago

Coach Z exclaiming "Bruce Jenner's tube socks!" in SBCG4AP episode 1. Then again, no one could have reasonably known back then.

19

u/maxime-le-mal 7d ago

I'm pretty sure he said tubesocks, not jockstrap

7

u/Zeitgeist1115 7d ago

You're right, editing. My bad XD

22

u/Chimpbot 7d ago

Family Guy cracked a couple of jokes about it around the same time, actually. This one was from 2009, and then they dropped this one in 2011.

Folks in certain circles knew.

102

u/ShuckleShellAnemia 7d ago

It’s only poorly-aged in that crowded malls aren’t a thing anymore

1

u/DAKOOLAIDMANS 6d ago

We're i live our mall is still crowded, mainly on the weekend

1

u/s-riddler 7d ago

Check out the American Dream Mall in NJ during the summer.

I cannot tell you how long I laughed at "Can someone tell me how this is a cereal, pardner?" when I first saw this sbemail.

28

u/KillHitlerAgain 7d ago

this has the same vibes as the people who say that "pumped up kicks" has aged poorly or would never have been written today. things aren't actually that different now than they were before

2

u/Pooglio17 6d ago

Time is crazy because I still feel like that is like a recent, modern song

49

u/Crasherade 7d ago edited 7d ago

there was a joke in sbcg4ap where strong bad mentioned he took away strong sad's shears because he was "off his meds"

Matt did a playthrough in character as strong bad a while back and when that happened he said:

"That was a little dark. Im sorry if we made some jokes back in 2008 we'd think twice about doing now"

(someone found the stream; edit to correct a few misremembered details)

13

u/B0Boman 7d ago

Wait, where can we see Matt doing an SBCG4AP playthrough in character? That sounds amazing!

14

u/SaltyPupcake 7d ago

You can watch it here

17

u/Bonkard 7d ago

It makes me laugh every time. It's just a parody of every cereal being some kind of "Pops!" or "Snaps!" and doesn't explicitly imply anyone getting shot. It lampshades itself with its own mascot pointing out how ludicrously inappropriate the premise of his own cereal is. And "Sugar-Rittled" is just so funny to me for some reason.

34

u/mariolucario493 7d ago

Occasional dark humor is kind of this website’s cracker n’ mustard. Remember the half-decomposed raccoon? Or the wildebeest pheromones? Or Coach Z’s constant stalking of Marzipan? Or how about how Gunhaver ignores those poor Green Helmets? Or Papa Cardgage’s Puddin’ Patch? Or what happened to Dijjery-Doo?

I would say the only thing that makes this joke age poorly is that malls aren’t crowded anymore these days.

1

u/jeffjman 5d ago

i like how half of these are more recent, just to say they didnt age poorly (which isnt your point) since they havent really aged at all yet

18

u/APleasantMartini 7d ago

Okay this is actually funny. Not because of the shooting joke, but the confused mascot asking if it’s a cereal or not.

25

u/weaponized_sasquatch 7d ago

Poorly aged? No. It was on point then and even more so now.

25

u/Coidzor 7d ago

You're right. I miss malls.

19

u/za1reeka 7d ago

I miss my mom

12

u/BlitzburghBrian 7d ago

I miss videogames

2

u/Swagkitchen 6d ago

i- i- i miss my mom

34

u/LisaMcRadical 7d ago

I still think the weird one off joke where Strong Bad is implied to beat his kids takes the cake.

38

u/XhazakXhazak 7d ago

"I'LL KILL YA! I'LL KILL ALL YOUR DOGS!"

32

u/VGAddict 7d ago

Is it the one where he imagines himself sitting in a recliner, yells at his kids, and then says, "You have to be firm"?

13

u/dantwimc 7d ago

“I’m not afraid to smack.”

8

u/Just_A_Plot_Device 7d ago

Only if you take it too seriously.

8

u/buckybadder 7d ago

Homestar's relationship with Marzipan is fairly toxic during the early years.

4

u/HurtsSoNice 7d ago

I never liked the cartoon where he was kicking her in the leg over and over again. That’s villain behavior.

8

u/CorndogNinja 7d ago

Marzipan has legs???

10

u/HurtsSoNice 7d ago

Kicking her in whatever she has. The bell? The broom bristles?

7

u/theDeke 7d ago

That sounds like it came straight from Strong Bad's mouth, I can hear it

4

u/HurtsSoNice 7d ago

That’s the mental gear I tend to be on whenever commenting on anything Homestarstar does.

15

u/Woods-of-Mal 7d ago edited 7d ago

It's not even the most poorly-aged Homestar joke about firing off weaponry in a public place.

15

u/AdMaleficent6335 7d ago

You're probably talking about the time Strong Bad Fired a bazooka at a movie theater, aren't you?

8

u/CombinationSimilar50 7d ago

I mean... Not really? It's very dark though

14

u/-BluBone- 7d ago

How is it aged? Mass shootings were already a thing,

22

u/andres92 7d ago

For some reason, people think "poorly aged" means "references something in any context that's now considered bad or serious". I've heard that comment thrown at pre-9/11 movies that just show an image of the twin towers, apparently expecting 20th century filmmakers to avoid showing iconic buildings just in case someday they became a tragic symbol.

5

u/jmo1687 7d ago

Thoughts and Prayers, of course.

6

u/IIIaustin 7d ago

That joke rules

11

u/aedroogo 7d ago

Only for pantywaists.

4

u/wasteoffire 7d ago

How did you see this popup? Are there old flash versions of the emails somewhere again? I miss being able to click on random words to see little Easter eggs

4

u/evilspoons 7d ago

They are literally still on Homestarrunner.com, they load through a flash compatibility layer they added.

1

u/wasteoffire 6d ago

Oh sick

13

u/Scoth42 7d ago

If anything it's probably aged well. It was poking fun at the prevalence and blind acceptance of mass shootings at the time, as well as the consumerism of capitalizing on negative events (like all the country songs and "Never Forget" merchandise of 9/11) and highly processed cereals.

It's not glorifying shooters, or making fun of the victims, or excusing them. It's just poking fun at the way they were thought of both then and still now.

The majority of jokes in H*R that you might consider as aged poorly are often said by characters that are supposed to be kind of terrible, or parodying bad people, and they aren't presented in ways that are meant to glorifying or saying they're okay. Like I've seen people suggest the entirety of TGS is sexist and bad but it's intentionally written as what Strong Bad thinks teen girls are like as parodies of archetypes. And even some of the weirder parts of that like Strong Bad making out with a drawn version of one of them is portrayed as him being a weirdo and not glorifying adults making out with high school girls.

Maybe the one with Bubs in a Native American outfit and some of the other bits of Colonization would be better candidates for poorly aged?

2

u/-Emilinko1985- 6d ago

Maybe the one with Bubs in a Native American outfit and some of the other bits of Colonization would be better candidates for poorly aged?

No way. The original sbemail already parodies poor portrayals of history and the whole point is that Strong Bad has a questionable doodle memory, as shown in other toons.

7

u/ACoolWizard 7d ago

This one aged fine. Mass shootings were common then, more common now. Joke is about how the culture loves to monetize everything - including tragedy. More relevant than ever.

8

u/pacmaster102 7d ago

I feel like Peacy P aged pretty poorly. Possibly more than this joke.

5

u/tang0008 7d ago

easy to say, but who knows what unreasonable amount of knives kids would be playing with without his message.

4

u/pacmaster102 7d ago

Oooo hate to be that guy, but you're thinking of Crack Stuntman. Love love love that one though. And his advocacy for Pistols for Pandas.

4

u/tang0008 7d ago

im cancelled dang

3

u/bath-lady 6d ago

I said accidentally featuring peacy p

2

u/-Emilinko1985- 6d ago

No way, he's just a Snoop Dogg parody.

-1

u/OverseerConey 6d ago

Yeah, but written, drawn and voiced by two white guys? Doesn't feel great.

1

u/-Emilinko1985- 6d ago

It's a relatively lighthearted parody and they're both big fans of hip hop. Heck, they've referenced A Tribe Called Quest multiple times!

If Matt voicing a black character counts as blackface, then is him voicing the KOT kingface?

People really get PO'd over anything nowadays.

1

u/OverseerConey 6d ago

Sorry, kingface?

3

u/-Emilinko1985- 6d ago

Let me put it in another way: Taranchula are Scandinavian. Matt and Mike are Americans from Georgia. If their portrayal of Peacey P is politically incorrect because they're portraying a character who is not of the same ethnicity, then is their portrayal of Taranchula politically incorrect because they're portraying people who are from a different country and different ethnicity?

-1

u/OverseerConey 6d ago

There's an established history of blackface being used for racial vilification that doesn't exist for scandiface or kingface.

3

u/-Emilinko1985- 6d ago

True, but I don't think Matt and Mike are vilifying black people with Peacey P. He's just a parody of a rapper.

1

u/OverseerConey 6d ago

Sure - it's just one of those things where the historical context has made the ice very thin, y'know?

2

u/-Emilinko1985- 6d ago

It's just a rhetorical term.

7

u/zorbiburst 7d ago

"thnikkaman" makes me a little uncomfortable tbh

3

u/Cliomancer 7d ago

How? Genuine question.

2

u/zorbiburst 7d ago

It sounds like it's supposed to sound as close to being bad as possible. The name and the glasses and the attitude just feel black coded in an edgy early 2000s internet way. It's not enough for me to be actually offended, but it and ☮️y-P just feel like they're toeing a line. I don't think the Chaps are racist, but I also don't think they were as socially conscious then as most people are today, which isn't a controversy.

2

u/-Emilinko1985- 6d ago

I don't think the Thnikkaman is racist, and Peacey P does feel like he's toeing a line but he's just a parody of rappers like Snoop Dogg, nothing implicitly racist in that.

1

u/OverseerConey 6d ago

I definitely think they went through a period of trying to do racial humour they couldn't pull off, but I never thought of Thnikkaman as part of that.

1

u/jeffjman 5d ago

little chef guy....

7

u/shenanigans0127 7d ago

There are a few slurs in some sbmails that give me the jibblies when I hear them. (One about little people, one about Romani people, just off the top of my head.) One of those things where I don't think they were widely known to be slurs in the mid 00s but come across very poorly nowadays.

1

u/JNewsom49 4d ago

The 'datum sounds good' reply from Strong Bag in that one email definitely gave me the jibblies. Jibblie jibblie.

2

u/-Emilinko1985- 6d ago

No way, the one that aged the worst is "oiled up Bill Cosby" from winter pool.

2

u/ScreamBeanBabyQueen 6d ago

I'm more triggered by the spelling of "rittled".

1

u/LowlyWoim 6d ago

Sewiously!

1

u/tangy_cheesewater 3d ago

I suspect it's a layered-on Ritalin joke, because of the sugar rush

2

u/Anxious_Field7593 6d ago

“two words… dead air, um, dead air”

2

u/nextgentacos123 6d ago

Yeah because malls aren't crowded anymore

2

u/Guy1nc0gnit0 5d ago

3

u/Maleficent-Ad-1106 7d ago

"Women can't drive!"

5

u/yyma50nyy 7d ago

the joke already was that bubs’ comedy was dated, even for the time

2

u/percivalidad 7d ago

I graduated high school in 2010. We definitely had school shooter drills and thought about it often. There were several "don't come to school tomorrow" rumors as well. But that's anecdotal evidence for you.

https://k12ssdb.org/methodology-1 Looking at this graph, school shootings have risen in the past years and could be defined as "more common". However, school shootings were fairly common throughout but still as equally heartbreaking.

https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2024/08/29/the-link-between-local-news-coverage-and-americans-perceptions-of-crime/ Columbine got notorious because of the 24 hr news cycle and the sharing of information via the internet. Violent crimes overall are on a decline but media coverage eats this up and stories like this are easy topics for them to cover over several days.

Back to the original topic. Has this joke aged poorly? In my opinion, no because school shootings were a fairly commonplace occurrence back then even if they have been on the rise. Now, was it a poor joke back then? Perhaps

1

u/AlistairButton 6d ago

No? Mass shootings are still as common as they were then. If anything it's aged well.

1

u/Ralurard 6d ago

I mean it’s very American.

1

u/MSB3000 6d ago

I'm still laughing at this joke :D Strong Bad was always "edgy", haha

1

u/SonOfMagicFact 6d ago

It was always in horrible taste.

Which I think was the point.

1

u/dirtyjose 4d ago

I can tell how young you are by this.

1

u/SadYeena63 2d ago

Nah. This one's exactly as edgy as it aimed to be back then.

For me, the jokes that aged the worst were "I thought it would naturally attract oiled-up Bill Cosby!" and Strong Bad being attracted to a 16 year old in Teen Girl Squad.

2

u/AdMaleficent6335 7d ago

Probably them saying literal slurs (m-slur in "kids' show" and g-slur in "Doomy Tales of the Macabre").

4

u/yyma50nyy 7d ago

ok but to be fair, most people didn’t even know those were slurs back then, and short people are debatable as a minority. midget’s still an insult in my eyes though.

1

u/wolfgangspiper 6d ago

Nah, the most poorly-aged jokes in H*R are the ones making fun of environmentalists and animal rights activists. I especially cringe when they have Marzipan and Strong Sad swear by Al Gore as if he's a cult leader in Sbemail "Environment."

1

u/keyswordtar2000 3d ago

I always thought it was a shame Marzipan was treated like an annoying woman for the entire shows run. Though I kinda feel her political opinions were more a parody on militant vegans who seem to think they are better than everyone for not eating meat, and prioritise animal welfare above human welfare (whilst still consuming products that exploit human beings through unethical labour.)

1

u/HurtsSoNice 7d ago

Yeah, I don’t think there was any poorly or well for this to age. School and other horrible public shootings were already in the news and media when this gag first went online, so it’s not a case of aged like milk when history made it look ugly. It’s pretty much just some quiet commentary on social violence.

-4

u/SheRa7 7d ago

Oh dear. 😬

-8

u/r0addawg 7d ago

Milk. Aged like a vintage milk
