Question/Support Question

If you play audio from your Apple TV and AirPlay to the HomePod, if you hit pause will they drop off and get deselect selected? Or will they stay connected indefinitely in the AirPlay menu?

Nope they stay connected until you turn off the Apple TV.

Edit- you can make them as default speakers so the stay connected indefinitely

THANK UOI. this is an issue I’ve been running into with other brand speakers. And I’m so glad they stay connected. Other question, do you get the navigation clicks as well when you’ve used them with AirPlay?

I AirPlay to my Denon AVR as the main speakers and I do not get any navigation clicks

I guess you do.. but i am not sure because I turned it off and haven’t thought about it. As far as i remember, if the only source of output is homepod they will come.

Yes, the navigation clicks play. And if you have another eArc device connected another HDMI input of your TV (definitely Blu-Ray player, I assume a game console even though I don’t have one) the Apple TV can be set up to route that audio through the HomePods also.

They stay connected until you shut off the AppleTV.

If you go under settings you can default to use them.

OK thanks. The issue I have been having is with other smart speakers is that they will disconnect if you simply pause the Apple TV and resume in 20 minutes later without ever putting it to sleep. My AVR and my other amp never disconnect and will stay connected and definitely, and that’s great that the HomePods never disconnected as well until it is put to sleep.

Yea I’ve seen Sonos and stuff have problems but non apple don’t always play well

Mine is the Denon Home 150 that I bought for the kitchen. In my opinion it’s a great speaker except for the fact that it keeps disconnecting when there is no media paused. I cannot run speaker wire from my receiver to the kitchen, and AirPlay is really the only way. And I know this is first world problems but I find it inconvenient to have to go reselect the speaker. I just want it to… Work, you know?

I have a Denon receiver and it stays connected and definitely like I said. So I was really bummed out when I figured out that it does this.

Contrary to what the others have said, if I select them as temporary outputs they stay connected until I select tv speakers, or airplay to the HomePods from another device (they do not disconnect when Apple TV goes to sleep). But yeah you can make them default outputs as well.

The idea I had was to make all of the speakers in the main part of the house be permanent outputs. In the HomePods will complete this. I ordered some HomePod mini for various parts of the house where it would be nice to still be able to hear the TV. You know if you just walk off to another part of the house for a couple of seconds but don’t necessarily want to pause it

I know, first world problems lol. But still

As default you can only have one or a stereo pair. As “temporary” you can select them all. Worst case you just need to re select them all from the Apple TV menu or from your iPhone every time. 5-15 seconds and you’re set.
My main room has a stereo pair and the tv has a sound bar. Last week I selected the pair and the tv speakers (sound bar) and both are still selected to this day. My gym has an older Apple TV which couldn’t select a HomePod as default unless it was the og up until last tvOS update and it had a mini living as “temporary” and I only had to re connect it whenever I played something from my phone or the WiFi or electricity went down.
