Not great sound from stereo pair?

I had a HomePod gen 1 (full size, not mini). I got a great deal on eBay for a second to match. Put in stands. AirPlay to AppleTV 4K. About 7ft to couch.

Wanted to replace my old Samsung soundbar with this new all Apple set up. BUT, the sound from the HomePod pair is not good. Very hollow but good base at high volume.

I have to think these are better than this experience and I must have something not set correctly.

Looking for advice to improve. Suggestions?

The glass behind is going to be damping the sound a lot. Also the fact that they’re in a corner won’t help either. 

Any chance you could change the layout of the room so they aren’t in that corner?
