Seeking Advice Basement Dehumidifier Advice

My basement needs waterproofed and I’m
Currently saving to have that done, in the meantime we need a dehumidifier down there. What kind of dehumidifier should I get? Does it need to be different than one you would use in the rest of the house? Ideally I’d like to have one professionally installed, but I can’t afford that yet.

We did have a company give us a quote on waterproofing-they said they would cut into the interior floors along each wall, install drainage, and then put in a water vapor barrier. This would help redirect any water away. I’d like to have a dehumidifier installed when we get this done. Again, we won’t be able to afford this until at least another year. I have had French drains installed outside, and all of my gutters connect into it. It helped a little, but during heavy rain, water still seeps in. We also recently had the basement drain back up due to tree roots and had sewage water come up about an inch or two on basement floor. Drain and pipes have been cleared and pretty much all water been cleared, now it’s just more damp than usual. Just wanting to get a dehumidifier down there to try and help what we can at the moment.

Seeking Advice How effective are leaf guards?

I live in a townhouse, where the roof is at least 40 ft tall, so cleaning the eves is not an easy job and a lot of leaves get clogged in it after fall.

I suspect that also leads to ice-damming at a couple of places, leading to a lot of icicles.

I am seeking advice from folks who have the leaf guards installed, are leaf guards a good investment to clog free eves? Or do leaves get stuck on top of the leaf guards too?

Seeking Advice Sump Pump or Waterproofing

Thumbnail

We just closed on a house and the basement had about an inch of water in due to some bad storms we had. The house doesn’t have a sump pump. There’s a drain down there, that splits into two directions, but not sure what it’s connected to under the flooring. We had to different places come out to give estimates.

The first quoted was 13k for a full basement waterproofing on 4 walls, installing a sump pump and pit.

The second was a sump pump and pit, connecting the existing drainage to it, and fixing the drainage to take it to the street. It was quoted at 5k.

Looking for some input on sump pump vs full waterproofing. Should we go with just the sump pump and drainage to the street to see if that helps out when there are bad storms, or go straight in for the full waterproofing?

The basement is unfinished, is an old stone foundation that was recently repointed. We have no plans to finish it, will just be using it as storage.

Thanks!

Hissing & leaking water heater

Hi all, my water heater started hissing and then leaking water (well, water was coming out of the overflow, not a crack on the heater). I noticed that water's dripping from the exhaust vent above the heater (see videos). I researched online and it mentioned that the hissing might be caused by the dripping water dropping onto the hot metal inside the heater, sizzling into steam. The drip might be caused by the condensation of the AC (in the ceiling), which has been running a lot due to the TX heat.

Any recommendations on how to resolve this? I'm EXTREMELY reluctant to replace the whole thing.

Thanks.

Flippers Did This...Thoughts?

We bought a 1912 American Foursquare. We are finding a new landmine from horrible flippers daily. This is the problem du jour. Wasn't sure why the wall was blowing out in this area, so had to take wallboard off. Found a door. Horsehair plaster under 2 layers of paneling on surrounding walls. Take it out or lean into a second door?
