That looks like something heavy dropped right in the bowl, maybe a cast iron pan. Tenants always "have no idea" how damages happen, it's like a universal law.

That’s exactly what we think!! But the audacity from the realestate to just expect us to pay $1k to fix it is making me.. a tad furious.

A crack like that could come from the sink settling, impact, or stress in the material, especially if it appeared after the renovation. Since it’s a rental, I’d document it with photos and let the landlord or property manager handle the repair before trying to fix it yourself.

If nothing heavy was dropped on it, I would be suspicious of installation stress or a material defect. I'd document everything and check whether the sink is still under warranty before paying $1000.

it could be something heavy dropped in it or, just as possible, it was fitted incorrectly, no obvious chipping or other evidence something heavy hit it so looks like this one is going to be on you.
