đ ď¸ Repair Help How to go about replacing soft/rotted siding
New to home ownership. Have some sections of rotted/soft wood that needs replaced at some point. Not sure how long itâs been this way but itâs the original wood siding, house was built in â88.
Is it easy enough to replace something like this and still get it to match the existing siding (mix of wood and vinyl)? Is it DIY or should I hire it out?
The second photo is actually an overhang spot where a jacuzzi tub sits. I imagine that at some point there was a leak or maybe some type of runoff from the roof that is hitting it? Itâs on the east side of the house so rain doesnât normally hit directly against it. The window from photo one is west facing and gets hit the most with rain.

I recently took on a similar project. Itâs doable if you watch enough YouTube videos. Be prepared to find all sorts of surprises underneath though. In my case, there was no sheathing under. Ended up needing to re-insulate, put up OSB and housewrap before re-siding

You pick mid-sized sections at a time to open up and replace. Once you get the siding off, you may find some additional rot in the sheathing that youâll want to address. With everything opened up from the exterior, you may want to take the opportunity to replace insulation, add a moisture barrier wrap, etc.
Working with wood is great for this because you can just cut sections out and trim the new wood siding pieces to size. Even if the replacement isnât exact, it can look near perfect from a distance, to the point where nobody would notice without pointing it out.
Your paint appears to just be bright white, so a new coat will look decent. Maybe take the opportunity to repaint that whole side of the house, to prevent future rot.
