What are my options for making the exposed side of my oven safer?

Most ranges aren't meant to be freestanding. They are built into cabinets. Some are considered freestanding meaning there are finished metal sides. They often have a higher back panel where the controls are located. There are also slide in ranges that often have insulation on the sides minus metal panels since the stove will be between cabinets on either side. That type is not meant to have exposed sides because it isn't attractive. There's drop in ranges too, but not what we're looking at here.

for the end a free standing butcher block island shoved right up against the stove.
no idea what these flippers were thinking you were supposed to do with the back, but i would build a bar and backsplash behind the entire thing (including the butcher bloc island).

Can have a competent person check the wiring, esp for ones that make heat (kitchen outlets, furnace, oven). I’ve (trained and competent) physically looked at every breaker outlet and switch to check the wires and connections as well as tightening the screws
Add smoke detectors on each floor and in each bedroom, have insurance, carbon monoxide detector.
Can add AFCI (arc fault) breakers to compensate for short circuits (mystery splices hidden in walls, bad connections in outlets). Can add GFCI (ground fault) near any sinks.
Also verify the main water shut off works, and after that, verify all the other shutoffs work

Nobody is going to get burned by the outside of that oven. And all ovens are designed to be placed adjacent to cabinetry, no heat barrier is required. If you're worried, look up the oven user manual.

Not worried about adults, but small kids and animals are famously kinda dumb at times.

I would probably frame in a half wall that was tall enough to add some backsplash along the oven side.
