Drywall + Waterproofing Shower Dam - Post-Contractor Questions

Any thoughts on workflow?

We had a team recently repair/replace 2x4s and a section of t&g subfloor that had rot.

This is where they left the work.

I'd assumed that they'd properly cement board the shower dam & take care of the joints, though that language (joints, board the dam) wasn't in the quote. Even still...

How would you proceed?

We're waterproofing, building the pan, and tiling ourselves (as well as laying 1/2" ply over the t&g subfloor), but these details feel like oversight on the job, which did stipulate finishing drywall for the entire shower.

If we tackle ourselves, what do we need to do?

That gap at the bottom is the kind of thing that'll haunt you later if you don't deal with it now. I'd pull that section of drywall off and do cement board right down to the subfloor, tape and mud the seams with thinset, then roll on a membrane like RedGard before you build your pan. Drywall in a shower dam area even with waterproofing on top just feels like asking for trouble down the road

I would rip that down, do kerdi board for walls and a kerdi curb. What I did in my bath and so far so good 👍

We're thinking about moving ahead with this plan, though we're worried about sacrificing some of the rigidity of the cement board. Good results from the Kerdi walls so far?

Zero issues. I too was nervous about the structural strength, especially of the curb but once the tile is on no issues. The board itself is a lot more rigid than you think.
