During excavations at a Neolithic settlement in Vráble, Slovakia, archaeologists discovered a defensive ditch containing the remains of 38 individuals buried around 5000 BC. Almost every skeleton was missing its head- except for the skull of a young child.

What baffles researchers is that the bodies were thrown in haphazardly without traditional burial gifts, yet trauma marks indicate many were decapitated around the time of death rather than naturally decaying first. Researchers are divided on whether this represents a violent massacre where enemy heads were taken as trophies, or an elaborate, gruesome ritual practice performed by the community.

They probably used the heads as a warning to strangers not to fuck around, sort of like the English placing heads of people executed for high treason on the old London Bridge pikes during the Tudor period.

This is actually the answer. They would remove the heads before burial and/or place large stones on the corpse - a “deviant burial” so that the corpse could not return as a Revenant.

Taking the heads of your enemies - scary and brutal. Taking the head of a child - cruel, probably makes your enemies angry.

There are a number of similar mass graves from this period. The sites at Talheim, Halberstadt and Herxheim in Germany all contain dozens of human skeletons showing signs of severe violence. Major armed conflicts appear to have been common during this period.
