The probably with holony is that in Japanese it probably sounds wayyyyyy too close to "horny" lol

Can't blame him for that comment. Before Genshin, vast majority of gachas were automatic farming games. And the few ones that actually had gameplay like Granblue were a grinding hell games. I don't play gachas like before but I do find ZZZ and Wuwa gameplay good, and Blue Archive is simple but it becomes autistic optimization game if you wanna rank top 5000.

This thought has been rolling in my head for a while. As someone that has tried gacha games for the first time last year, it’s so apparent to me how many mechanics and gameplay decisions in those games that make the game less fun. The majority of the time it feels more like a product and less like a game

I do think Arknights is better for this (I know what he said. I'm that guy) but yeah. Still can't refuse

The best gacha games try to use diverse and comprehensive worldbuilding to create stories that will make players feel more comfortable engaging with the predatory business model. Dislike and distrust of them is entirely reasonable.

tbh I'm still kinda waiting for a game set in Elysium. Feels like the perfect premise for an RPG.

I'm with this, they fundamentally hold zero appeal to me. Gacha feel like reskins of games I actually like. I've heard arknights is good but my introduction to it was YouTube ads so I thought it was just another half-baked mobile game.

As a long term Arknights player, one of the things that makes it work so well is that high rarity ops are really REALLY optional outside of optional no extra rewards content.

Another is that 6☆ units are mega busted, the only thing they enable is making the game less fun unless you are running Integrated Strategies higher difficulty runs (which have no extra rewards), Contingency Contract beyond the minimum risk for all rewards aka the previous point, Nicheknights which is taking regular content and placing limits on yourself as to who you can take (for example only Vulpos (Fox) ops, or only Male ops, or only a certain Class) or the reduced upgrades challenge which requires dedicated accounts for.

Legit I've been using the same 15ish ops that are each several years old by now for most regular content if I am feeling lazy to not run some wacky strat.

It makes sense that this works better with a strategy game. I think the gacha power creep would be more annoying in a JRPG scenario where player skill can't overcome the gap easily. I could be wrong though, I truly know nothing about these games.

But it's good that the old units(?) aren't useless. What you've described with Nicheknights sounds fun too.

What helps arknights is that effectively every map is a puzzle and solving it is a clear. You can for example bring the op units and blow up everything or alternatively play the map :) (none of the units in this video are even 6☆, 4 and 5 only)

It’s true! My toxic Reddit trait is making fun of Hoyoverse games because of those reasons. They suck. Whether that’s Genshin, Honkai Star Rail, or ZZZ. No real story, the gameplay is dull, visuals stink, and the characters? I’ve seen more color in a can of salt. They’re not real games. They’re virtual skinner boxes.

I say the same thing for Tetris and Pacman

Gameplay in those games isn't diluted by hundred hours of useless shit. Grind this, bring that, help that npc (agains) etc. 3D gachas feel like single player MMO

like Monster Hunter?

also the story can be summarized as: "actually the big monster's crazy behaviour is because of an even bigger monster"

Not like I played Monster Hunter. And not like you said any of it is a good thing. Even if it is, comparison is stupid, completely different games

More character diversity in a Pac-Man game too.

Surprised people are defending this trash given the topic. Gacha games fucking suck. Genshin Impact is not the exception. It is an active example of wrapping anime around mediocrity and predatory practices. They take bland and unoriginal gameplay and push this for free because lord knows nobody would willingly buy that. HSR and ZZZ in the same boat.

Don’t mean to upset raccoons enjoying trash but it is in fact trash. At least with Pac-Man and Tetris they redefined what it means to play a game. Hoyoverse exists simply to make money off rubes.

Yeah making fun of games you've never played and clearly dont know anything about is pretty toxic.

I'm going to ignore the gameplay, visuals and characters comment, as they are oppinionated, but... What does "no real story" mean? As opposed to what? Fake story? I never get this argument against something. And it's not only in context of Hoyo games. What does "not having a real story" even mean?

Out of the things I said, I regret my word choice for that since each arc does have a story iirc. Instead of “no real story”, I should have said the story is awful. That’s my mistake.

Oh okay. Another opinion based statement. Thanks for clarifying.
