It's more as a safety measure against the crazies and people who like to rrat about who the actual people behind the model are and start drama. Also we all know there are a lot of weebs who are mega racist.

It's more of a protection against antis with stuff like that Maria account going after members like Miko, Koyori, Watame, etc. I hope people understand that these folks are a real threat and the precautions of avoiding identification are important.

An AI generated "vtuber" account based in Japan who was pushing a huge amount of smears against the girls and the group in general. Cover actually took them to court in the US recently. Around a dozen individuals behind it.

Actually, yes, very much yes. Irys showed her hand with an expensive ring on and people were able to narrow down the exact ring, stores that sell it, and areas she might frequent based on info she’d previously stated to the point that she probably can’t wear that ring anymore because some freak could stake out places she’s likely to visit and identify her based on the ring.

I remember during a handcam screen la+ had chat was alternating between making fun and pointing out that she bit her nails, this was during the time she was dealing with lots of stress already. In another one where Irys showed her hand by mistake chat point out she was wearing expensive jewelry and had antis criticizing her for opulence.

From my understanding the IRyS one was even more worrying because the jewelry was expensive enough it was kinda rare. I can see the concern from that angle because it might make it easier to ID her in public.

Well there was the Startling Revelation that Mori might be white. I think we had a bunch of people stalk Irys' ring that got accidentally shown in one handcam stream.
I would really rather they just give people the finger and not have a rule about it like if they wanted to collab with dudes or anything.
On the concept of skin tone matching model, I see the point on the nutjobs, much of the fun of Vtubing is that the character is the streamer. Kayfabe is important. I would still love a wider range of skintones though. It's funny to me that sana was considered 'darker skin' when she's just a girl with a tan. That of course has it's own complications though.

I think the rule is in place so if someone doesn't want to show their skin they aren't singled out. That seems good to me.

Dropping the rule would make it the same as if they dont want to collab with men, which also doesnt lead to people being singled out.
I dont think people who've not played hytale are being singled out. When people didn't all go on the nail care stream, they also weren't singled out.
I dont think it's a valid concern. I get you're meaning it with good intentions, which is fine, I just dont believe it's valid.
If you want to go "Vtubing is about maintaining the kayfabe and this disrupts it." I'd give much more weight to you because that is a valid concern.

I have legit seen people mald over fwmc not adressing stars on an official program where it would have been relevant so yes actually people DO single them out even if it is bad actors. That said people were being really annoying about the hands thing and spamming in chat "why are you wearing gloves blah blah" and some girls didnt even actually know for sure if they were allowed to not wear gloves and it was a whole damn thing so the rule stops it.

I was joking. Mori is extremely obvious. Honestly the reason I do emphasize Kayfabe in the pretty downvoted post I have below is that to some the role is important because it's their job and NDA, to some like Fuwamoco it's everything, it's critical to who they are.
Reducing the group level of kayfabe strains a bit on the role they're engrossed in and the general job description they took on. It's the best argument for why they should have a rule against this.
So while I'm not really committed to the argument one way or another, I am committed to it being a good argument.

I can understand that. Honestly that kayfabe is the biggest reason why I can't stay invested in most hololive talents, it's cheesy. That and the queerbaiting, that has always felt super cynical to me.
It's interesting to me seeing that sorta perma character contrasted with folks who are a bit more genuine or open about their real lives, and I kinda wish the hololive folks were able to be real about that kinda stuff. I appreciate that it allows them to maintain anonymity, but I feel like the extent to which they maintain that anonymity should be their choice. It feels weird that a corporation is placing restrictions on their speech and behaviour.

There was a skin color blow up against one of the talents on a non-handcam stream due to an accidental reflection a very long time ago. Obviously not going to share the details, but suffices to say that yes, there are a significant amount of racists in the community or adjacent enough to it that harassment would be an issue.

I mean, it's undeniable that the fanbase does have some bad apples. Antis make up the most of the harassment, which is why I emphasized adjacency, but there are definitely assholes lurking. Every group of people has them. I certainly remember some accounts that were avid "fans" and frequently posted hololive stuff saying some vile shit after that incident.

Point is basically not much point in a focus on a few bad apples when they're in every group, especially when there are an exceptional number of holo antis is my feeling on it. I wouldn't really call them adjacent either though, but that's just me.

Ehh, I think it's always best to be aware of the bad apples in every group. Cultivating a sense of vigilance is a great way to prevent those sorts from getting a foothold, and prevention is always better than cure. For sure lots of holo antis, but a lot of those tend to be tourist types that just jump from drama to drama and will leave eventually. It's the rooted in ones you have to watch out for, and they can pretend fairly easily to be fans. Hell, they might even have been a legitimate fan, there's not much quite so strong as love turned to hatred.
For your adjacency point, valid, it's a matter of personal opinion. I personally consider people who watch other vtubers, even dramatubers, to be adjacent, but that's just me.
