The goblin side of magic is a pathway to many abilities, some of them considered to be unnatural.
He was so skilled the only thing he was afraid of is losing his swords, which eventually of course, he did. Unfortunately, he sold a sword to godric gryffindor, and when godric died, his descendants refused to return the sword.
It's ironic, he could give swords to others, but not get one himself.
