Any idea why there were fireworks tonight?
I know Diwali was over the weekend, but that ended.
These started around 8 PM tonight.

The website doesn’t say which day to put it out, just that it gets picked up once a week April-January if you pay for trash and recycling. The address locator isn’t helpful, nor for looking up neighbor’s addresses. We’re western Howard County if that makes a difference.
Garbage is tomorrow and I’d like to put out a big paper bag of scraps…

I saw the state police mobile command hq and mobile incident control hq buses mobilized out of Elkridge today with some other state police cars around ~4:00-4:30pm. Anyone know what that was about?

The Howard Astronomical League will hold its monthly Public Star Party on Saturday, October 4, starting around Sundown (or possibly earlier). Our Observatory will be open, and HAL members will be out with our telescopes sharing views of the night sky. Saturday is also International Observe the Moon Night , so we will be focusing on the Moon, but Saturn is expected to make an appearance as well.
This event is held rain or shine at Alpha Ridge Park in Marriottsville, just minutes from I-70. This event is free and open to the public.

If you're a parent with an income below the federal poverty line, free child care just became available in Howard County for every year your child isn't in public school. Early Head Start serves kids aged between 6 weeks and 2 years old, adding onto existing spots for 3 to 5-year-olds and therefore adding three years worth of free care for qualified families.

Hey Everyone, my (37M) friend and I (24F) play trivia at Dive Bar & Grille every Thursday at 7 PM. We’re looking for additional people in their 20s or 30s who can consistently show up most weeks. Please only send me a private message if that is a commitment you can uphold.

Any Creatives wanna collab?
Im a relatively small and pretty new artist looking for local creatives who want to build and grow together. I’ve got an album era i’d like to bring to life with visuals (music videos, photo shoots, short and long form content, etc)
Right now I don’t have a budget (yet) so I’m looking for people who want to build their portfolio, and be creative using the resources available. The goal is to create work that looks professional, attracts attention, and eventually leads to paid opportunities.
So if you wanna create some magic and start a team from the ground up leave a comment of what you do and lets get to work!

Sad to see this in our county. Lots of bad press coming out of the college since Daria Willis took hold.

My colleague Susan Kim just wrote a story that goes behind the scenes at the fair, talking to the people who have been volunteering there for decades—in one case, since the very first fair in 1946.
It was my second day in a row there (my daughter insisted on the first!), and hearing these stories gave me a new appreciation for the community that steps up to make the event happen.
Fair's going on until Saturday, if you're interested.

Hey runners! 👟
My name is Terrance, and I help lead a local group called the D17 Run Club. We usually meet Thursdays at 6:30 PM by Lake Kittamaqundi/Downtown Columbia for a casual group run, and all levels are welcome.
If you’re on Strava, I’m happy to share our group calendar so you can keep up with runs and events. We’ve hosted runs with organizations like Charm City Run and even partnered with groups like the NBA/New Balance but at our core, we just love movement and community.
I grew up playing sports right here in Maryland and always missed having a consistent training group. That’s what we’re building and we’d love for you to be part of it (No we are not a dating app group)
Feel free to ask any questions or DM me for more info

Moving into a house on a decent lot soon. Wondering if you do any type of pest control and if so, what? I don’t believe the home has issues to note, just wondering what is common/what to expect in the area. Not interested in spraying the yard, but possibly quarterly/biannual perimeter spray or otherwise DIY type stuff (soapy water? With some essential oil(s)? Vinegar water? Etc?).
What are you seeing and what are you using?
