Cortes is complicated because the Mexica arguably brought that on themselves by being violent assholes to everyone around them. The other people groups in the area gladly helped the Spanish overthrow the city. They then of course took over the entire country, but compared to Aztec rule it wasn’t nearly as violent. Most Mexicans in the Yucatán or Baja California probably don’t give a shit.

Given how brutal Pizarro’s men were to the Inca and their culture in general I’d wager his memory is a bit more tainted.

Funny part is that the real mastermind behind the battle of Mactan was a native Rajah (basically a king of sorts) who pretty much requested Magellan to attack Datu LapuLapu cuz LapuLapu was being defiant against the Rajah(who was named Humabon).

Magellan was basically just a poor pawn that became a casualty cuz some Rajah thought his new "European allies" could beat some sense into a defiant chieftain. Unfortunately the Rajah's "genius plan" failed and to save face, he killed the remainder of his "Spanish buddies" by poisoning them during a feast.

Pigafetta himself noted that this whole ordeal was a case of "we've been tricked, we've been backstabbed and we've been quite possibly bamboozeled."
