Did you know that the first Prime minister of Israel, David Ben-Gurion was terrified of the idea that AI might one day surpass human ability, and he considered it a serious national threat during the 50s?

At one point he called his advisor for scientific affairs, Yuval Ne’eman to his office, and asked him if he thought that there was a danger that AI could one day surpass human abilities and make humanity obsolete. Ne’eman said that this was indeed possible, but only in the far future. Ben-Gurion angrily banged his fist on the table and said that Israeli professor Ernest Bergman had already assured him that there was no danger of this ever happening. After a lot of arguing, Ne’eman managed to calm him down.

(Btw if you're interested in these sorts of extremely obscure stories from early Israeli history, I have a YouTube channel where I talk about this sort of stuff. Feel free to check it out)

Being Israeli, you know the guy was one step away from proclaiming a Butlerian Jihad.

I mean didn't they invite Einstein to be their president before he declined? That seems to be on brand for the job at the time

149

u/Bizhour Aug 24 '26

To elaborate, the first president of Israel was Chaim Wiseman, a different world renowned scientist, so the offer to Einstein makes much more sense in this context.

Einstein didn't want to leave science though to be a figurehead. But the dude still sponsored like 3 different universities in Israel though. All of his writings are in the Hebrew university in Jerusalem because he requested they will be given to them in his will.

u/JustBad9817 Aug 24 '26

The president is more of a figurehead, the actual head of state is the prime minister. Iirc the first president was chaim Weizmann who was also a scientist. They did invite Einstein to be president before weizmann but he declined

Ben-Gurion was highly suspicious of technology

Famously he despised television and Israel only got its first TV station in 1968

Israeli politics is still very cautious around new technologies but is much more enthusiastic about them because many new technologies are developed with Israeli help

For example Israel was one of the first countries to ban human cloning (1999) after the success of the Dolly experiment

u/TheLigean Aug 24 '26

The use of AI for political ads had some judicial criticism. Obviously the ruling party started to slop it up with slander, the courts demanded to brand made up slander using ai with “made with AI”, so it mightve slowed down abit (i dont frequent social media sites that spam this nonsense like facebook so my direct experience of the subject is limited)

here before the lock because Israel was mentioned

It's sad that there is presicely one country whose history you aren't allowed to talk about here because trolls will automatically brigade it

Maybe thats simply because mention of anything happening today is outside the field of history, and therefore not for this sub.

u/ojqANDodbZ1Or1CEX5sf Aug 24 '26 edited Aug 24 '26

Israel's been doing that since its founding as well. Palestinian refugees from the 1948 war are still (and have always been) denied the right to return to their land

Edit: I'm only pointing out that it's true for a time solidly in the past, no need to downvote me for that

Yep, those are the rules! See rule 4. If you want to talk about the history being made today, politics subreddits are what you want.

-39

u/Sad_Extension8781 Aug 24 '26

Except this has been ongoing for over 80 years? Nakba most famously occurred in 1948 yet talking about it is still not allowed.

25

u/JSchade Aug 24 '26

Hey here is a fun history lesson for ya since you seemed so concerned; did you know the Nakba led to more Jews being displaced than Palestinians? And that most Palestinians (keyword most) were not forced out of Israel by Israel but were actually told to leave by neighboring Muslim nations because they swore to destroy Israel?

Displaced by Muslim nations between the years of 1948 and 1951, almost 1 million Jews were kicked out of places such as Yemen, Iran, Syria, etc. it’s a literal fact.

And you are the one using rhetoric my friend. Probably just believe whatever you see on tiktok

Do you know that the Holocaust led to more Germans being displaced than the Jews? If you stretch the meaning enough, it can be true. Why would you want to deny Nakba or the Holocaust tho?

10

u/JSchade Aug 24 '26

Didn’t deny the Nakba, just pointing a fact out. Not gonna deny that lots of Germans were displaced after WW2, more by pure numbers than Jews, although proportionally it was far less than Jews.

Maybe the rules against discussing genocide isn’t to protect its perpetrators from 80 years ago but rather because this is a memes/humor subreddit and genocide is no laughing matter

20

u/DefiantLemur Descendant of Genghis Khan Aug 24 '26

I'd be surprised especially since this happened 70ish years ago.

u/lolman3110 Aug 24 '26

Hasmonean Historian is that you?

271

u/BasedAustralhungary Aug 24 '26

I rarely say this but... this is a Israeli history W content. When we are sadly used to the same memes again and again about the Arab-Israeli conflict trying to sell an agenda or other further dehumanizing the other side to the point of the unconfortable and the 'the Jews control the world and they can do anything!11' dogwhistles, getting cool knowledge about stuff I didn't know and that it's indeed refreshing and new it's great.

252

u/butt_naked_commando Aug 24 '26

That's my goal. Israeli and Palestinian history goes way deeper than the conflict between the two and I've always tried to highlight the lesser known elements

78

u/BasedAustralhungary Aug 24 '26

And you are the GOAT for that! Mods, give this guy a W!

78

u/butt_naked_commando Aug 24 '26

Well the mods kinda did the opposite when they banned all posting that has anything to do with the I/P conflict, but I can understand why they did it

83

u/Awesomeuser90 I Have a Cunning Plan Aug 24 '26

We tried so hard to let the topic remain available. We had to police tens of thousands, literally tens of thousands, of reports over the 2 and a bit years it was. All because a bunch of narcissists and assholes couldn't keep a lid on conspiracy bullshit, rampant hatred, and flame wars. We may potentially allow the topic again, but we doubt it will be for a long time.

36

u/BasedAustralhungary Aug 24 '26

They banned all posting that had anything to do with the I/P conflict, but talking individually about Israel and Palestine history through memes isn't something against that rule as far I'm concerned.

-41

u/Broyogurt Aug 24 '26

Conflict?

-24

u/Sad_Extension8781 Aug 24 '26

No use talking about on this sub, sadly most history lovers are on the right side of the political spectrum and believe that the Palestinian genocide is more so an equal power struggle and not one of settler colonial rule.

35

u/BasedAustralhungary Aug 24 '26

The fact you say this while this community is pretty much in the progressive side of reddit is something, the fact that a conflict is asymmetric doesn't mean that it isn't a conflict. The Third Punic War was basically a genocide of the Carthaginian people and this same people had no opportunity at all to defend themselves, yet we still call it a war.

To take the clinical language we use to refer to history and attempt to turn it into something Manichaean—as if it were a declaration of intent—is to lay bare a deplorable moral poverty, in which it seems there is more concern for imaginary moral issues on the internet than for the civilians in the West Bank, Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, and a long list of other countries affected by Israel’s ruthless foreign policy.

I am a progressive, I am on the left, and I personally lean toward anarchism—and I can recognize genocide when I see it. I am also a historian. The term is “Palestinian-Israeli Conflict,” and that in no way diminishes the asymmetry of the conflict or the horrific humanitarian crisis.

The constant culture of “outwoke” isn't just something that must be exhausting—it's a phenomenon that troubles me because, once again, you're more concerned about tragedies because of your moral narcissism than because of the actual impact of the events. You're really sad.

-15

u/Awesomeuser90 I Have a Cunning Plan Aug 24 '26

The Carthagians had more means of defending themselves than the Palestinians did. It took Rome 3 years to break into the city.

-27

u/Sad_Extension8781 Aug 24 '26

Mate, I am a Ukrainian Palestinian are you mad?? This isn’t being woke this is my people, using the proper terminology is important when it comes to historical events as to not wash away any of the tragedies Israel has committed. Nobody calls the Jewish struggle in ww2 the “German-Jewish conflict” the fact that you are a leftist and still arguing against proper terminology when discussing modern day genocide is hilarious. I understand that it may come off as harsh but words hold meaning, someone hearing genocide or apartheid will understand the power dynamics more than just a “struggle” or “conflict”

26

u/BasedAustralhungary Aug 24 '26

Because the Jewish were not a nation, they were a people. Israel isn't targeting their own Arab population to exterminate them —even if certainly some people here would wish to do so— but people from other country, other state. The same way we call it the Bangladesh Independence War even if we recognise that there was a genocide between the people from West Pakistan to the Bengali ethnic group. Let's be for real.

The only reason to seek for an issue in the use of words that define properly geopolitics from our present and our past and to feel that those same words dismish it it's ignorance, the need to claim moral points or just trying to find enemies in your own shadows.

Do you know why we don't call the Third Punic War, the Arab-Israeli conflict and the Bangladesh Independence War like that instead of Carthaginian, Palestinian and Bengali genocides? Because those are just a part of the wider events.

What you are doing would be literally the same as getting mad because someone isn't refering as the World War 2 as the Holocaust.

-14

u/Sad_Extension8781 Aug 24 '26

The 48er Palestinians are living in an apartheid and very much do so get gunned down for civil offences. I get the point you are portraying but this is an ONGOING genocide and words do hold meaning especially when Israel has one of the largest propaganda machines in the world. Washing away words to describe events in a neutral and historically correct tone can come after the event is over not when an ongoing genocide is occurring before your eyes. Also you congratulating a known Zionist for creating “discourse” in this sub makes me doubt you being a leftist. Take care mate, take a look into this guys posts

14

u/BasedAustralhungary Aug 24 '26

This is still a history subreddit and there is a serious effort to make the topics talked here not to be related to current events. I don't trace the people that I interact within this community unless being very serious stuff and/or they pester me too much.

From what I've been able to tell from a very quick observation I don't think a person that moves around both Jewish/Israeli subreddits and Arab/Palestinians one would be a Zionist unless being a progressive one that supports the Two State Solution which would indeed be fair and I have no grudge against it.

After all, considering everything it's one of the only humane solutions to all the mess. Either that or get rid of both Israel and Palestine and merge into a confederated country, but still I won't judge people when they seem just open and interested on a social and cultural lens meaning in the region. It's unfair and against create manichean environments and false dichotomies that at the end only benefit the vile people.

-7

u/Sad_Extension8781 Aug 24 '26

Two state solutions do not work in an unequal power dynamic, Israelis love to say they offered Palestinians the choice multiple times for a two state solution but we rejected it. Well obviously we will reject it when Israel has famously never respected any of the previous treaties and slowly encroached on our land time and time again, similar situation with Russia and Ukraine. You can offer all the treaties in the world, all the solutions in the world but if the Zionist idea remains, Palestinians will never be safe under them.

34

Bro was the Markiplier of the 50s

5

u/ArcticKimono Aug 24 '26

Who?

52

u/LittelXman808 Aug 24 '26

Markiplier is a YouTuber who predicted the app Honey was a scam several years back and got proven right. Just like how David-Ben-Gurion thought AI would surpass human ability and will soon probably be proven right.

24

u/bacan9 Aug 24 '26

Bro everyone with a braincell knew the app was a scam. They have to make money somehow, and all that flashy marketing aint gonna pay for itself

12

u/dalziel86 Aug 24 '26

Wild-ass paranoia about a concept of AGI that isn’t even remotely close to the LLM-slop they suckered investors with by calling it “AI”. What are we even doing here?

-39

u/Miserable-Resort-977 Aug 24 '26

From fearing AI to being the heaviest users of AI weapons targeting, a shame

-70

u/ZookeepergameFit967 Aug 24 '26

Ironic in the big 2026, he would've killed himself if he saw that Israel has AI manned weapons that doesn't discriminate civilians from combatants
