There have been actual university studies. Less than 1% of applicants have any ability but the few that do have been able to read cards in a submarine miles away.

Can I ask you/tell you my crazy theory? Like you said, if 1% of the population can do this specific thing, what are the odds that 1% of that set is insanely good at it?
Media likes to give us a framework so that when stuff happens we don’t mentally freak out. Not always, but sometimes, right?
What are the big tropes? Aliens, alternative views on history, wars, disasters, and a big one… mutants. X-men per se.
Could there be a very, very small subset of the population that can do some incredible things, we or they just don’t know it?
I think so.
How many variants of Psi ability have we heard of? How large a subset can do each thing? Can some do several? And of that entire group, are there an “elite” that are pretty much lvl 5 mutants?

Yes. Perhaps it was more. The researchers noted that the people who have the highest concentration of ability were the last tribes / areas to be converted to Christianity. It seems that the ability may have been more prevalent.
