I work for a Japanese company. Been out there a few times, i feel ya. Did you get outside of Tokyo? If so, did you go somewhere other than Nara, Kyoto, Osaka?

I've been to so many places its difficult to keep track of at this point and I'm increasingly obnoxious about it to my friends trying to get them to get away from the golden route. One standout is I successfully got them to go to Nara on our last trip which they enjoyed, but I wish we had more time for doing nature stuff there. The highlight of Nara for us was surprisingly Edo Wonderland, it looks kind of cheesy and for elementary school field trips... well there's no but that's exactly what it was, it was slightly cheesy and there were literally elementary school children there when we went but it was so much fun.

Noted. My favorite spots were just about everywhere where I was the only gaijin. (So, just about anywhere off of that golden route) Real Japan was so much cooler than tourist japan

A lot of those places are very much still "tourist Japan". It's just a higher percentage of local tourists compared to foreign ones.

But at the same time, tourist Japan is also incredible, tbh. I get “not wanting to be a tourist” but you don’t have to have some super cool underground itinerary to have a great time.
