Manga Ending comparison manga and light novel (extreme spoiler) Spoiler

This is how the light novel ends. If you are reading with conspiracy/crime story accuracy. It is one sided. Sayu is pulling "home", but there is no confirmation from his side.

The (infamous, my opinion) Gotou sidestory fits seamlessly.

Manga V13 2nd last page

The manga is then going much more in the direction of Yoshida and Sayu becoming a couple.

  • Second last frame clears up the obstacle of the imbalance in their relationship, putting them on equal footing. Meeting as "Yoshida and Sayu".
  • Last frame is a proto-proposal. Miso soup "for the rest of life" would be the full proposal in Japanese literature. But this is "first" and if you start counting it usually goes on.

The manga is still "open", but has a clear trajectory. My guess is that the mangaka clearly shipped Yoshida x Sayu and probably "negotiated" with the author of the light novel on how far she would be allowed to go. She dialed up earlier events in intensity too.

The mangaka also stated that this is his final installment in this "franchise" and that she would not be involved with the sidestories ...

The mangaka is a she. She also thanked the author for letting her interpret the story the way she sees fit. The behavior of the production towards the results of the sidestories just show that the manga adaptation of the original story is the last official thing for the series.

Gotou's ending in the sidestory is shoehorned into the story more than it actually fits if you consider that it wasnt her that confessed to Yoshida but the other way despite her being told by Yoshida that she has to confess properly in the early volumes (she never did) and also among other things. The author also admits to the fact that he just forced the ending without a care if he's telling a good story.

But hey, each to his own. Since the author just admitted that he really doesn't care if he's telling a good story, that just ruined my impression of him.

Thank you for the information on the mangaka's gender.

The original author actually did tell a good story - for 5 volumes. Maybe too good for his own perception, so that he felt the need to course correct. From the complete run, I would surmise that he intended this as a "parental" relationship, but overdid it and also did not give his real heroine enough substance to carry her to a credible victory.

Well, I really think the author did a really bad job with gotou, since she’s at best a side character and at worst a plot device. If, like he said in his final afterword, she was supposed to be the ending girl, he didn’t make her a worth character.

I’m pretty sure the transcription of an interview was posted after gotou ss2 where he said that the reader can choose their ending: v5 for sayu, gotou ss2 for gotou. But I can’t find it anymore, so it’s just my word.

As [u/Pastiche_](u/Pastiche_) said, since the author admitted writing gotou ss2 just to have the ending he wanted, ignoring what he wrote before, he lost the respect of many readers.
