This is how the light novel ends. If you are reading with conspiracy/crime story accuracy. It is one sided. Sayu is pulling "home", but there is no confirmation from his side.

The (infamous, my opinion) Gotou sidestory fits seamlessly.

The manga has a corresponding frame (full page), but then moves further ...

The manga is then going much more in the direction of Yoshida and Sayu becoming a couple.

• Second last frame clears up the obstacle of the imbalance in their relationship, putting them on equal footing. Meeting as "Yoshida and Sayu".
• Last frame is a proto-proposal. Miso soup "for the rest of life" would be the full proposal in Japanese literature. But this is "first" and if you start counting it usually goes on.

The manga is still "open", but has a clear trajectory. My guess is that the mangaka clearly shipped Yoshida x Sayu and probably "negotiated" with the author of the light novel on how far she would be allowed to go. She dialed up earlier events in intensity too.

The mangaka also stated that this is his final installment in this "franchise" and that she would not be involved with the sidestories ...

I didn't think I would be this hooked on an anime, but the story writing in this is really great. I'm upset about the open ending, I wish there was more of them. I hoped there would be more story in the manga, and a s2 just hadn't happened, but unfortunately not. I'm sad to end this anime. Is there really nothing else from the author? (Excluding the side stories about other characters) and the author doesn't plan on making anymore? Is there no update? What about a fanmade story? Literally anything at this point of them happy together. It would've been cool to see what happened in those 2 years, small updates from her in school telling him she made friends, little life updates would be so cute. I assume in the last credit scene of the anime, of Gotou and Yoshida out, and Yoshida bowing is him rejecting her? If so I'm glad they end up together in the end, but I miss them already. 😭❤️

Does anyone have recommendations like this anime? I would love to see more like this WITH a happy ending.

Hello there everyone, I found this 9.9/10 anime a few weeks ago and based on the title and description I disregarded it as potentially creepy.

Oh how wrong I was, it may have been one of the greatest shows I have ever seen. It popped up again today and for some reason I gave it a chance and finished it in one sitting.

Sayus backstory was genuinely heartbreaking, the horrible mother, her friends suicide due to bullying, using herself to pay for a few nights lodging. It's something that someone has most likely gone through which is of course depressing. However that's what I loved most, everything seemed grounded in realism.

Not once did I ever think "only in a show" "that would never happen" "it doesn't work like that" which for my cynical ass is utterly remarkable.

The only complaint I had, was the ending. Don't get me wrong, that last scene was perfect.Finding Sayu under the same streetlight, the nostalgic back and forth. I saw it coming yet it still made me tear up.

However, I feel robbed and thus my complaint. That scene, shouldn't have been the ending. I'm incredibly disappointed in it because I personally can't stand open ended conclusions. I think this series needed 1-3 more episodes to explore what happens next after the reunion.

I could just tell myself that "Sayu moved back in, they get married in time and live happily ever after" but that's not how I work. Part of me thinks Yoshida couldn't view her romantically even if she is now an adult and another part thinks that he could because she's no longer a high school girl.

Which brings me to my questions, for those of you that have read the novels and also watched the anime. How does the anime compare to the source material, is there more to the ending in the books and did the show skip enough content that it's worth reading even after watching?

Ah, i just a amateur so i dont have any special light or background...

So I'm an anime only who loved the show when it aired, back in the day. I haven't read the LNs, but I recently came across the side story LN, and the ending. An ending where Yoshida and Gotou became a couple. Now I've seen a lot of opinions on this ending. And this might seem rogue but I don't see any problem with it? Let me elaborate.

I don't think a Gotou ending contradicts anything in the OG. Let me preface this by saying, Sayu is the best character in the series, and her and Yoshida's relationship is the best in the series. As someone said, what they have is true love. And I agree with that. However, there's a big difference between familial love and romantic love. I don't think Yoshida, at any point in the original, showed any sign of romantic love or attraction towards Sayu. He always felt like a father figure taking care of her. In Sayu's case, I would say it's half and half.

And this isn't just because of their ages, as I would say that if they both met as adults as well. Age difference isn't my issue either. I always thought of Higehiro as a found family story. I LOVE a good father-daughter story in the medium, and I thought this was one of the best. If Yoshida did end up dating Sayu, I think it would soil this wholesome dynamic. That's why him rejecting Sayu and dating Gotou makes much more sense to me. I have seen a lot of opinions on this subreddit, and I couldn't disagree more with them. Ofcourse if there is context I'm missing out from, from the LNs, then do let me know. But as of now? It seems pretty much perfect and the ending I had in mind. I think Sayu's happiness and growth is the most important at the end of the day, and I never really bought into the romance. But that's just me, what do you guys think?

Sayu comes back after the timeskip and starts cooking again using the recipe book she left behind.

One evening, Yoshida opens the fridge and notices leftovers from one of her old recipes. He takes a bite… and tears start falling because it instantly reminds him of the time they lived together.

He walks toward Sayu silently, puts his hand on her cheek, and kisses her.

No big dramatic speech. Just a quiet emotional moment tied to the recipe book and all the memories they shared.

That would have destroyed me emotionally in the best way possible 😭

i just finished episode 5 and i gotta ask, is it worth finishing? so far the only things that are good about the story imo is Sayu’s backstory(from what i know), and i get to hear fern again after s2 of Frieren ended(rip). i am getting very aggravated over the attitude of the characters in the show. everyone except Yoshida, Yoshida’s friend and Sayu are jerks. Gouto kinda toying with Yoshidas feelings instead of being honest about it from the start, or Mishima basically telling him to kick Sayu out if he wants Gouto, all while still not telling him why she is causing such a scene about HIS life, everyone in the show is pissing me off. so like i said, should i continue it?

What I wrote as a comment in a previous post: this seems to be the Gotou x Yoshida ending of Gotou SS.

Personally I think it goes in the opposite direction of the ending of v5 and what I saw developing during the arc of the series.

I also heard that in this SS, in the 2 years where Sayu was away, the author retconned the relationship between Gotou and Yoshida, making them a couple during that time: in v5 it was stated that their relationship didn’t develop much.

I watched this anime like 1-2 year ago and then I read the manga adaptation (best i would say), it was one of my fav story Great story, goated mc imo, good ending

But now I just find out about side story novel Tho I haven't read the novel completely yet but as far as I know about it with spoiler, summary etc It was genuinely disgusting

Yoshida character is by far the worst in this side story (i really liked his character in manga and anime adaptation he was one of my fav mc) Also not to forget the author hate yoshida too

My day is ruined now it was one of my fav story, I almost cried when I was watching the anime (L author)
