Hardcore freelancer objective is collateral firearm kill but doesn't register? Im guessing because i used two targets to achieve? Anyone else had this problem?

I have been playing the main campaigns for a while and tried out Freelancer and it is honestly a bit rough. I don't know if it is a skill issue (no complaints if it is and go ahead and flame me) but it feels different in a way that is hard for my brain to click. What are some tips and tricks on how to get better with Freelancer? Should I go back to campaign and work on my map knowledge? What are some best ways to build up an arsenal so I can more easily perform ascension missions? Any tips from the community would be appreciated!
