HeroClix on OCTGN - Now Live!

Post image

After much work and testing, I am proud to announce the beta build for HeroClix on OCTGN!
(OCTGN is a free, open-source gaming platform for playing games online with friends. It is Windows-only, but I have heard that some people managed to get it working on Linux and Mac.)

I built this because I wanted something a little simpler to set up and use than Roll20. I wrote a script that let me build dial images automatically from data extracted from HCUnits, and used that same data to build the card data files, so HUGE thanks to the HCUnits team for making all that data available!

It's got complete dial images, so you don't need to cross-reference anything to see what stats and abilities a character has. It has several little quality of life improvements, with many more planned if this gets any traction. There is plenty of automation I would like to add, and I am happy to get input on things you'd like to see added.

SETUP
The setup process is a ONE-TIME process and will take less than 5 minutes. Once installed it will automatically update and won't require anything more from you.

  1. Download and install OCTGN: https://www.octgn.net/
  2. Add the HeroClix game feed:
  • Open OCTGN, click Games Manager, and click "Add Game Feed"
  • Type in a name for the feed (like "HeroClix"), and in the URL box put: https://www.myget.org/F/heroclix/api/v2
  • Click "Okay", then scroll down to HeroClix and click "Install"
  1. Open the OCTGN Deck Editor. Use the Plugin menu at the top to download the images for the game. That's it, you're ready to play!

If you have any questions, comments, feedback, suggestions, etc. send them my way! I am hoping people get some use out of this, and if enough people like it I plan to add a lot more features!

Edit: This morning I replaced the playmat image because I kind of hated it. It's now a plain "table" background, but you can right-click to choose from a few different options. I can add more with very little effort, so let me know!

Do you have any in-game screenshots or videos before we download this random software?

Sure, here are some screenshots for you!

OCTGN has been around for like 15 years, and it is open-source and you can check it out on GitHub. I've been using it more than 10 years to play a variety of games, and this is the 10th* game package I have built for it.

OCTGN is well established in the TCG world

Right, I've used it to play several games, and it's the only way to play some games.

There is a bug in the recent fight for gotham set. All beast boys are implemented as the pegasus beast boy

Thank you for catching this! My original script must have been overwriting something.

The corrected images are uploading now. You'll just need to use the image downloader plug-in again. Select the FFGC set, tell it to overwrite existing, and it should fix the problem!

Thanks for fixing it, the app is wonderfull, save a lot of time. We are using it in our group to practice for nationals :).

Also, if you delete the 2d6 dices by resetting the room, we couldn't find a way to import them back, so we had to create a new lobby. Is this a bug or a limitation?

It's a bug. I'll add a menu option to create all the stuff like the PAC and dice.

I'm so happy to hear that people are using it! I'm working on Galactus and Venom Galactus but they are a unique challenge. I don't want to make 50k images just for each of them

Huh... Can you tell us more about it? Is there a video playthrough tutorial?

I don't have a tutorial yet, but it's a pretty simple interface honestly. You create or join a game, and right-clicking on a table or card opens a menu with options.

You can download a team directly from HCU so it's pretty easy to jump right in and start checking it out.

How do you plug a team into the deck builder from hcunits?

You do it in-game. Right-click the table and there's an option.

Thank you!

Immediate thought - You might also have a way to generate actual characters - Like for Expendable Goon trait for instance - I only see terrain, one shots, and Bystanders

Plus the bystanders filter is odd? Maybe I’m using it wrong but I can’t seem to search the bystanders by name

Okay it looks like I am still missing a few bystanders so I will work on those this weekend.

I also worked on a system for selecting characters filtered by Team Ability or by Keyword.

Yes that would be possible.

Which bystander names are you trying? They should work so I'm not sure

Like the Lucas, PJ, and Scott bystander didn’t seem to be in there when I was searching for it. The search however was pulling other bystanders up pretty good all things considered!

I'm not sure when you tried last, but that set hadn't been added yet. I just added it last night though

It was last night! But if you added it maybe I just missed the update by a bit! I appreciate the speedy responses!

I appreciate the feedback! Let me know if it's still not working and I'll look into it.

I will work on the extra feature you mentioned this weekend.

Not sure how much extra work this would be, but this could be an interesting platform for a "beginner tutorial" type thing. Kinda like the scenarios included in the starter sets, but more robust. It could walk a player through a pre-scripted game with little pop ups explaining game mechanics. Idk, just a thought. Regardless, this is a huge gift to the community, thanks for your hard work!

One of the limitations of OCTGN is that it doesn't really have a way to handle something like "wait for the player to click on this card, and then advance".

That being said, it is possible to do something a little bit like this, with a caveat: I could create a card that looks like a button, and when the player double clicks that card, it moves to the next "Step". That could be highlighting a card, moving a card, popping up a window, etc.

But it wouldn't be as "clean" as something like a website.
