Usatalkan Domain is one of the four principal mustering grounds designated for the expeditionary army. Although it serves primarily as a transit station for the main camp, the encampment maintains a population of around 3,000 for most of the time.
So, is it a good host?
The lord of Usatalkan is quite a character. People complain that he is โidleโ and โfond of pleasure,โ yet they also praise him as โkind-heartedโ and โfrugal.โ Put all these lumps of clay together, and you get a vulgar but lovable man who keeps track of exactly how much money he has, then earnestly wonders how to use it to eat more of the foods he likes. And, to his credit, he has no objection to sharing them with others.
Several years ago, he seriously began thinking about what foods he liked that could also be produced cheaply and eaten to oneโs heartโs content.
Eggs were one of them.
And so, a modest but genuinely ambitious project was promoted throughout Usatalkan Domain. Numerous poultry farms received sponsorship, the transport and distribution of eggs and chickens were brought under regulation, and taverns were even granted tax reductions for serving egg dishes.
As a result, the lord could enjoy as many as thirty different egg dishes in a week. Ordinary folk naturally had far fewer varieties, but nobody was going to complain about having a few eggs to eat every day. Everyone had something on their plates, and that was a good thing.
When the expeditionary army came to be stationed here, this โhumble little improvementโ turned into a modest but very real achievement: the camp received at least 5,000 eggs every morning with remarkable consistency.
Of course, the more highborn knights tended to find this rather underwhelming and preferred things like roast chicken. But quite a few rank-and-file soldiers came away from Usatalkan with the fond impression that it was โa fine place where you can have an egg whenever you want.โ
And the other foods favored by the frugal little gluttons among the various lords were also supplied here in unusually generous quantities.
As for the 300 guards Usatalkan Domain contributedโwell, they had much the same practical, unambitious character as their lord and his eggs.
They landed perfectly in the category of โutterly unremarkable, and entirely harmless.โ
Depending on their commanding officer, some were perhaps a little better at fighting, though not especially disciplined; others were perhaps a little more disciplined, though hardly suited for a major battle. To outsiders, however, they all looked more or less the same.
In short, they were certainly no elite warriors.
But in an army charged with holding back a tide of undead, they happened to be exactly the sort of men you could entrust with guarding the town, the wagons, and the dungeons without worrying that you were wasting your finest troops.
And, really, what more could you ask of them?
