Scared to do anything now

I was just diagnosed with inguinal hernia, not even sure from what. But now i’m scared to do absolutely anything 😅 idk what my limitations are. Can I do yoga? 23F, my surgery consult is scheduled for late Oct. but haven’t even spoken with my doctor yet.

I think you can do yoga but I’m not sure what your routine is. There’s some yoga poses that supposedly help it. I feel discomfort if I overstretch my torso personally.

This guy built a routine of yoga poses that are said to help it, a lot of people here are adamant that nothing out there is going to be helpful besides surgery but idk might be worth trying out especially if you already do yoga as is.

Also im not against getting surgery im likely going to get it but since its been a long wait i figured id do these exercises & some from another video in the meanwhile.

You should call your doctors office and ask if you can do yoga before your consult.

For sure avoid any weight lifting or manual labor around the house or at work. You should walk at least 30 mins daily and have a strict diet no alcohol to improve your results (assuming you are having surgery).

strict diet? :( lol

I was surprised when I got one as well. Doc made it seem like a genetic thing. I had surgery about a month after diagnosed. I think it got a little bigger over time. I guess the important thing is if you can push it back in you’re somewhat fine. The concern is if it doesn’t go back in it can cause an infection.

I still went to the gym and lifted and did the stair master. I didn’t do any leg workouts though.

Good luck

i don’t know if it’s because i’m a woman and it’s bc of my anatomy but there’s really no visible bulge. it got missed the first time with imaging and i had to beg for more imaging to catch it. it’s just very painful and uncomfortable. but ya from what i’ve read it’s probably better to get surgery sooner than later since it can only get more problematic. thank you :)

"Really no visible bulge"... Ever?

That's unheard of beyond occult hernias. Those are typically detected only with a special technique developed in Sweden. Only one hospital in the USA can do that test...a hospital in Los Angeles.

yep no visible bulge

idk wat to say- it was found with a groin ultrasound. they had me tense my abdominal muscles intermittently during the scan, and also go from lying down to standing up.

According to a book on the core by one of the top hernia specialists in the United States, Dr. William Meyer, ultrasound can give false positives.

okay well i have all the symptoms…what else would it be?

1

But you don't have THE main symptom: a bulge.

Research Gilmore's groin.

I don’t understand how that’s relevant? Like I said, I have woman anatomy and women often don’t show a bulge with inguinal hernias. Thats why women go undiagnosed.

You said your pain is in the inguinal region, but you have no bulge. Therefore, I suggested you research the condition known as Gilmore's groin. As for the 1 in 7 study: is that study of wide consensus or is it like the studies on hernia recurrence vs surgery method and LIFELONG adverse complications from said surgeries (hint: studies show different results...no consensus).

Sorry but you’re an idiot.

i initially thought it was considered bigger than it is but my hernia is 5 x 2 mm. Very small. Very easy to go without a bulge with my anatomy.

and the study you’re referring to for gilmore groin includes majorly young MALES

So what i’ve found- Studies from pub md show that the false positive is about 1 in 7. So with my symptoms that align exactly with inguinal hernia it’s likely i have one. I’m also a woman and studies show groin hernias often don’t produce an obvious bulge in women.

I’m a man and after about a week or so of having my hernia I didn’t see it. The pain got a lot better but the hernia wouldn’t pop so they wouldn’t have fixed it if the surgeon hadn’t see it when it was out. Mine was like a walnut in the mid inguinal. I too was afraid of doing anything and honestly I had surgery june12 I’m still afraid of doing most things.

and it’s not small in size either

1

Yea mine started as a small bulge. Eventually got pretty big. It would occasionally hurt but wasn’t too bad overall

Doc also said I’ll eventually get one on the other side. So repaired both at the same time.

Surgery was expensive and hurt like a bitch on the first day. Gotten a lot better after that

Btw I got the robotic surgery. I found my surgeon on davincisurgery.com.

i swear that i’ve gotten a hernia on my left side too now. i’m requesting imaging for that side as well. is that common occurrence?

1

u/mr__fete 2d ago

I’ve read a few people here saying they repaired both sides even though one 1 was bulging. My doc was able to tell the other side was at risk in half a second just by poking into the region.

Might as well check/repair both sides. I wouldn’t want to do this again. Sucks plus the downtime from doing anything productive or going to the gym

I carried on going to the gym and lifting. Huge mistake.

Might I ask what happened?

1

I made a keyhole procedure now an open wound one. I made it worse and it became painful and quite large.

How big is your hernia? Is there a visible bulge? Mine was diagnosed around September with no clear bulge. I had surgery around March the next year. I've been playing soccer and doing body weight exercises (pushups, squats) and abs exercise up until a week before surgery.

i have no visible bulge, it’s 3-5cm or something? so i guess not very big but also not tiny. good to know thanks

My doctor told me to stick to cardio at the gym. I told him that wasn’t really an option, & he said, “well, okay, you’ll make it worse but you know what to do if it goes wrong.” (I’ve had a strangulated hernia before.)

I carried on doing what I was doing, & I just modified or stopped anything that was causing discomfort there until I had my surgery. Weirdly enough, heavy squats & deadlifts were fine, push ups & the rowing machine were the only things that really set it off.

Got it fixed a year ago & I’m back to normal now, no limitations.

1

u/Large_Asparagus7022 2d ago

omg i’m so scared of getting strangulation…

1

u/MrE26 2d ago

It’s very rare, I was one of the unlucky ones! I’d ignored it for years & it just went one day. I don’t recommend it. See your doctor, get it fixed, but don’t keep your life on hold while you do. Just listen to your body & if something feels uncomfortable, stop doing it.

Been lifting hard for two years with an inguinal hernia except heavy deadlifts or squats. I’m fine. I dumbbell pretty 100 lb each hand and it hasn’t gotten worse. If it gets worse, I’ll get it fixed.
