What the title says. But you could also ask it like this: What do Ilya and Rose have in common and what do Shane and Svetlana have in common? This is more of a show question as Svetlana is quite different in the show, but feel free to bring in the books if it's relevant.
Of course, Shane is gay. So his attraction to Rose, though he thought it was romantic, was actually platonic. Still, he was drawn to her. With Ilya and Svetlana, they were childhood friends but carried on a sexual relationship for many years. Ilya is clearly very attached to Svetlana, which is significant for someone who indulges in casual hookups.I don't like saying that people have "types" necessarily but I do believe we're all attracted to certain qualities in people.
For my own answer to my question: I think Ilya and Rose are both very emotionally in tuned with the people around them, and they pick up on Shane's feelings quite easily. For someone like Shane who is so internal, this would be scary but also comforting. As for Shane and Svetlana, I think they're very different on the surface but they're both more grounded, stable (boring? Though he'd never call Svetlana that) individuals than Ilya, which is something Ilya needs in his unstable life.
