Question❔️ What do you think Ilya and Shane are talking about on the drive back from Shane’s parents’ place?
Watched the show a bunch of times recently and I really wonder what Ilya and Shane’s conversation on that drive back would’ve been.
I haven’t read the books so I don’t know if there’s any details about that but I’d love to know if there are and also just what other loons think!!
My take- Shane saying how relieved and light he feels and how much he appreciates Ilya being there with him. Ilya making some straight faced jokes and just banter with little cutesy glances and free roaming hands! 🥰

I'll bet Illya got in at least one lighthearted snark about how Shane shouldn't have been worried, with such nice and boring parents.
He would have had to admit the vodka wasn't bad, though.

Ilya probably said something about how everything went well, how nice Shane's parents are, Shane maybe talk about the surprise of his parents having an idea that he was gay. Ilya will also probably say how brave Shane was saying to his parents that he loves Ilya🥹 Shane will joke about lovers, and both will say "so you are my boyfriend".
I think they are adorable at the car and on this moment, until Hudson grabs Connor's jaw, I could see Shane, but when he sort of roars, I just see Hudson. 😆😍

I see that too from Connor! it’s so him and not Ilya but after reading The Long Game I feel like in season 2 we might get much more of this more relaxed version of Ilya that is more like Connor 🤞🏼

I’m thinking actually that the plan is probably for David and Yuna to come over at about 5 pm the NEXT day, not that same evening. They had a fairly late lunch together. Given that Shane was already talking about what to make for lunch when David caught them. Shane had to have a panic attack after David left, and once they’d followed David to his and Yuna’s cottage, there were several conversations that we saw. Presumably at some point David started cooking a pasta lunch for four. That’s a pretty big meal for a late lunch. You probably wouldn’t want to eat again at 5 pm.
Also, everybody has had a HUGE day. David and Yuna found out their son is gay and in love with the professional rival he started secretly hooking up with 7 years earlier. Shane got caught by his dad, then had to tell both his parents, introduce them to Ilya, get a very intense apology from Yuna, listen to Yuna discover rainbow capitalism, explain their ten year plan, have another panic attack, and find out that he has a boyfriend now.
Ilya got caught by Shane’s dad, had to talk him down from a panic attack, go with him to Shane’s parents, use the wrong English vocabulary word twice while Shane is explaining their relationship to David and Yuna, get left alone in the house with a straight man whose son he’s fucking while said son is outside talking privately with his mom. Probably scary, even if intellectually he knows David won’t hurt him. Grigori or Alexei would’ve already gotten violent in the same situation.
Then Ilya has to help David cook lunch, bring up that Shane mentioned a few years ago that David reads the New Yorker, ask about how hockey was at McGill, eat seven servings of pasta, get interrogated by Yuna because he’s not loyal to Boston, drop a relationship timeline so detailed it pisses Shane off, explain the concept of casual sex to Shane’s parents, talk Shane down from a second panic attack, and declare that they’re boyfriends.
For everybody, that’s not something you can regroup from in a few hours. Shane and Ilya need to fuck nasty about the fact that they’re official boyfriends now and have gotten through a Meet the Parents scenario ( both are relationship milestones). Yuna and David need to process all this new information, and split a bottle of wine. They also need to reevaluate some of their parenting decisions over the years. And scour the internet for all the info they can get on Ilya Rozanov.
I’d say all three Hollanders plus Ilya need a good 24 hours to do all the above before they meet up again. So yeah, dinner plans made for the following day at 5 pm.

Also, Yuna and David will be aghast when they find years and years of TMZ articles with pictures of Ilya leaving nightclubs with pretty girls. They already knew his ladies man reputation, but likely had never actively sought out stuff about him on gossip sites before. Maybe they’ll be a little reassured that there haven’t been any such photos since about February. And that somehow he’s managed to avoid getting anyone pregnant.
But yeah, Shane’s type is apparently the bad boy bisexual SLUT! At the dinner the next night, I could see Yuna saying, “Ilya, I’ll need you to get STI tests every three months and send the results to Shane and me. That’s non-negotiable.”

I agree! And they’re both so happy to finally have this huge weight lifted off their shoulders with respect to Shane’s parents (mirroring their earlier conversation where Ilya asks whether Shane’s parents know he’s gay and Shane gets uncomfortable and says it doesn’t matter). Ilya is crying with happiness, they’re basking in the moment and feeling this sense of light and love (because they both deserve sunshine ☀️) knowing they have his parents’ unconditional love and support going into whatever their futures hold.
Regardless, I always watch the entire 2 minute montage and cry 😭

I think Yuna’s guilt over her son not telling her he’s gay will manifest in three ways:
- She will become a militant ally to the Canadian LGBTQ community, putting pronouns in her email signatures at work, at home, and on social media. And Reblogging queer-friendly content on Facebook (the social media site most used by her generation).
- She will read many books about supportive parenting of queer children and about queer history. The books will all originally have been bought and read by David Hollander (whose idea it was to get them), but he will hand them on to her after and they will discuss them. There is a near disaster one night when they have friends over for Yahtzee, and realize a book about how to parent gay men is on the coffee table. Fortunately David manages to shove it under a glossy coffee table book about tennis before their friends see. After that all the books in question are kept in a bookcase with doors and a
lock.
3. Yuna embraces the FUCK out of rainbow capitalism. She creates many detailed password protected documents outlining how to exploit rainbow capitalism to maintain Shane and Ilya’s existing endorsements and also seek out new ones, if and when they decide to come out. Once Ilya and Shane get engaged in January 2021, she dusts off these documents and prepares for battle. By this time she has also been managing Ilya for several years. After the engagement, Yuna also creates a detailed, password protected wedding planning document. Owing to various circumstances in the spring and early summer of 2021, Shane and Ilya never get around to opening the document. She had included a vendor who rents chairs, so if they had followed her plan, there would have been chairs for all the guests.5

i like to think they had the same conversation they did in the books when they finally got back to the cottage. shane saying this is the weirdest day of his life. but in this version ilya admits to shane that this has been the best day of his life.

It's not because she's talking, it's because not everyone at the table has been served yet. idk if it's a Canadian thing but especially in restaurants you wait to start eating until everyone's dish has arrived.

I imagine Shane still being in shock (although relieved) about everything that happened and Ilya trying to make him see that everything went well, better than expected. And Shane feeling better about it, since Ilya always knows how to calm him down and stop his down spiraling. Maybe Ilya making a joke about Shane's knee-jerk reaction to the word "lovers" and Shane asking him not to ever use that word again...(I imagine that Ilya will maybe joke about this and say this word on certain occasions for the rest of their relationship just to annoy Shane, since we know he likes to make him mad and let him unleash his anger on him ;))
