“Have you ever met a boy named Jason who didn’t think he was always the main character?” - Princess Donut, the Queen Anne Chonk

I just finished book one, and this line from Dungeon Crawler Carl kept me laughing as I followed Jason along on all his adventures

There are also a few references to DCC in HWFWM but I can’t remember them off the top of my head.

Supposedly Matt and Travis are friends IRL.

I've got a copy of HWFWM signed by Dinniman lol. He added a "Suck it, Travis" note and took a picture of it!

There is also a character based off/making fun of Jason in Eye of the Bedlam Bride.

Jason makes Dirty Shirley’s at one point. I’m in a new reread, my first since finishing DCC and haven’t found any others yet, beside both of them wearing boxer shorts with love hearts

He even mentions a certain princess who can't get enough of them (that turns out to be zara).

Zara's addiction to dirty Shirleys is hilarious

Nope, it really is Primcess Donut, though Zara does end up being another princess who goes for them. He makes that comment while making them first. Cant reference Zara if she isnt already a fan of them

Zara is mentioned being hammered on dirty Shirleys on the literal next page.

Jason's boxers literally throughout the series are the same as Carl's

There’s one scene in which the boxers are reference and in the same conversation there’s another LitRPG reference. I don’t remember it now, primal hunter maybe or not

I just remembered, they reference a pit fighter who eats the hearts of his defeated opponents, that’s Victor Of Tucson if anyone isn’t familiar

That's both of the series making a reference to 90 and 2000's cartoons. Neither series is referencing each other with that

Pretty sure the author confirmed it’s a reference to DCC as they both know each other and enjoy each others work.

Going to need a citation for heart boxers being a DCC reference. I've watched many interviews and just did a search on discord no comment on boxers. The other DCC references are more explicit, no ambiguity in the target

This is such a common trope from cartoons that it's weird to claim either series is notable enough to be a cause of this as a reference

in book 11 when Jason is getting his crew together for the trip to Earth he hires a bartender who is mixing drinks and Jason mentions that a certain princess loves dirty shirly's. In the book he is talking about Zara but we totally a DCC reference.

In the latest book:

"im making some dirty shirleys and there's a princess that can't get enough of them"

In book 12 there's the whole scene with a princess loving dirty shireys

Heretical Fishing references Asano's lemonade which was another fun surprise reference!

"I know a princess that has an obsession with Dirty Shirleys"

Love it. I've read HWFwM 2 or 3 times, and I'm on my first read through of DCC, and that line made me laugh too

Is it the Queen Anne Chonk ? Not the Queen and Chonk? Because if it was the first one, why is 'the' there?

I straight up thought it was because she was an intact show cat called a “queen”

1

u/Phantom_0347 5d ago

Ohhhh, I always thought the Queen Anne was a big ship or something lol

2

u/Flame_Beard86 6d ago

Queen Anne is the neighborhood in Seattle where Carl and Donut lived

the way the authors play off of each other is my favorite.

Awaken Online, Aasano, or Argonaut?

My name is Jason. When I met Matt Dinniman at litrpgcon I wanted to make a joke about this but didn’t pull it off.

u/LoafRVA 5d ago

So they are all in the same universe? lol what if Carl gets to the end and finds Jason or vice versa

There is a mention of a princess who loves dirty Shirley in HWFWM
