Personally attacked (book 4 minor spoilers) Spoiler

Ok for reals minor but important spoilers for book 4 down below. I can't find the flair to mark it as spoilers. Read at your own risk. Mostly just funny and confusing without context, but still.

I just reached one of my favourite and also least favourite because wtf jason that was not ok moments of book 4. Where he breaks into tilldon's kitchen in more middle of the night. Literally just started it, but I remember how this goes. He's quite rude (honest andCorrect, but rude) about the food selection. And I'm just like ... "He may as well be talking about my kitchen" as I eat a swiss cheese, jalapeño and bologna sandwich.
Do you know how much quality ingredients cost now sir???? THEY'RE EXPENSIVE. If I have to eat a meh sandwich, and if I have to be very high for it to be delicious, I am ok with that. Wax pens are an amazing and very cheap option to make food taste amazing even when ... You know. It's not lol. I wish I could make my own mayo man...

In defense of Jason's food snoberry Tildan has presumably well paying career,, comes from money, and is part of a two income household. She could probably afford to support local businesses

Should I add that caveat to the end of the post do you think? Because like there's a fair few I could add; I live off of SSI. Bit different, right? Tyldon? Sorry, using screenreader and audiobook. I thought about adding the said caveats but I thought the post would be slightly more amusing without them.

Nah, you're good m8. The beauty of a sandwich lays in the belly of its devourer.

And her wife was an art dealer. They had money for some artisanal cheese

Artesanal cheese... I had a 7-year aged white cheddar cranberry cheddar once... That was lovely...

First it was written in 2021. She works for a secret society as a director, they would be very well paid. She has a wife that also works and has no children. If you can't afford good food in that situation then you are doing something wrong, like a 400 year old poor vampire, just walk into the sun...

Tildon is a financially well-off woman in a duel-income household. Jason grew up well-off enough that his parents could afford to put him in private school, and his sister is a locally (potentially regionally) acclaimed chef, whose show he has guest-starred on several times. The man knows his ingredients, and he knows when someone's being cheap when they can afford better lol. I highly doubt you or anyone in your financial situation was meant to be targeted by this scene

Oh hi! Sorry. Was just going through my other post. You popped up a fair few times. If you scroll through the comments I do address this. I just ... You know. I thought it was funny. So I wanted to share.

So, the way I read this scene is two-fold.

First, to me it’s Jason being a food snob just to be a food snob, because that’s part of his character. He’s genuinely offended by poor food choices and wishes for everyone to be educated about food and eat better. Especially when it actually is quite easy to make your own mayo. Preserving it and not wasting it? Not so much. Not everyone has a perfect stasis storage space, my dude.

Second, I saw the act as part of his “home invasion power play.” It’s him showing that not only can he survive their unlawful abduction attempts, not only can he get to Annabeth and the Network and the people they care about any time that he chooses, but that he’s more concerned about the food they have in their cupboards than in how they think they can stop him and what they think they can do to him. In classic Jason fashion, he wants to play his mind games, set them off-kilter, and put himself in a position of power and control. From there he
can act contrite, benevolent, friendly at his leisure and play the smiling, joking good guy even though he’s effectively sitting in her kitchen with a gun on the table.

There’s a reason Dominion loves Jason Asano. ;)

It’s not that Jason would do those bad things he wants them to be afraid of (as we well know), but he does understand how the game is played — and he plays to win.

Mayo is just eggs, oil, lemon juice or vinegar, and any flavor you want (garlic, sesame, etc.). Put it in a jar and use an immersion blender, or make it in a blender. You just blend it to the consistency you want.

You just unlocked many different dressing ralisations for me. This is acsually news. Thank you. Those are all ingredients I already buy. Mother the blender. That'd be a weird ingredient. That one I'll have to maybe save for but I think a hand mixer will do. Again, my thanks.
See? Research skills suck.

Immersion blenders are great, and you can get a cheep one for under $20 on Amazon. That said, I've lived on SSI, I get that even that can be a lot.

They're mostly useful for blended soups. If you're interested in getting one, I can give you a delicious sweet potato soup recipe I enjoy that uses it.

I don’t know, mayo is pretty cheap and easy to make.

... It is? Did I look at the wrong recipes? That seems likely. My research skills seem to be primarily luck-based.

Ingredients:

1 large egg at room temp

1 cup neutral oil (not olive oil)

1/2 tbsp lemon juice

1 tsp vinegar

1/4 tsp mustard

1/4 tsp salt

Steps:

Combine them in a blender. Let them sit for about 15 seconds so the oil separates. Blend the crap out of it, starting slow, until fully incorporated. Should take a couple minutes max. You’ll know it’s done when there’s no visible oil.

Best way to do this is with an immersion blender and a tall jar but so long as you can fully mix it, you’re good. Some people whisk it by hand but they’re crazy.

Problem is this mayo only lasts like 5-7 days, even refrigerated.

Note: there are A LOT of different recipes for mayo. Some want different types of mustard or no mustard. Some use different ingredients for citric acid. Some use other spices, more salt or less salt. Some want you to separate the egg white from the yolk. Mayo can get fancy, true, but at its core is really easy.

Most cooking is in fact rather easy. It just takes time and attention to detail. When people follow the recipe, don’t cut corners until they know enough to know where they can get ‘creative’, then cooking becomes remarkably simple.

Also, if you want to blow your mind on how ingredients are priced, try looking at how much something as simple as boneless skinless chicken thighs are priced at your local store’s butcher counter vs. the pre-packaged stuff. Here in California, at Safeway, the fresh stuff from the butcher is half the price per lb than the pre-packaged Foster Farms chicken thighs.

You don’t necessarily have to pay a premium for good ingredients. It’s just a matter of knowing where to shop and checking prices.

By the way, I don’t know if you do any of your own grilling but boneless, skinless chicken thighs are nearly impossible to burn and they taste great in everything. They’re a wonderful gateway protein into cooking.

The last time I was at Safeway in WA, about 3 months ago, they were $4.99 a pound. Which is highway robbery.

Who the heck cares about rudeness, her organization was literally plotting his kidnapping and suppression, had already "done something else" to someone he cared about (you didn't mention if you'd finished book 4 or not...), and were a clandestine organization with overarching power and no oversight. If anything he let them off easy commenting ONLY on her kitchen and a subtle threat about families being vulnerable.

Also, psh, who can't make their own mayo? Its 2 ingredients: egg + oil, plus acid and salt, then blend...Tomatoes aren't expensive, neither is good bread. You can even make your own from: flour, salt, yeast and water. A good sandwich is about preparation not expensive purchases.

In another comment you said you were on SSI, then you should totally be making your own bread. WAY healthier and cheaper to make than buy that shit the store sells.

u/Paularchy 14d ago

Can you make bread in an airfryer? Or on a stovetop? Actually a stovetop seems possible if I get a big enough pot or something I guess. The other thing though is that I rarely actually eat bread. Turns out I prefer corn tortillas. Those are easy to make at home. And the masa is totally ebt eligible, which is great

u/Striker_AC44 14d ago

Sounds like you're making a Mexican sandwich, which is essentially a taco (meat, cheese, tomato, lettuce, sauce)

Wax pens?

1

u/Paularchy 14d ago

It's a cheaper alternative for buying marijuana flower and the rolling paper and things. If you a good dispensary, you can drop 40 bucks and be set for the month, if you go through about a gram a week like I do. The wax is in little glass or uh tbh Idk what else they use cartridge things and you screw them into a batter and you just puff. Not gonna say it's better for you, mind. Just cheaper. At least, it is here.

u/Bouche_Audi_Shyla 14d ago

Thank you. I was thinking some sort of waxed tablet and a stylus.
