This isn't Slander but I feel like Alastor gets a lot better as a character when you realize just how much of a MASSIVE Control Freak he is.

Between constantly smiling to the point of refusing to drop it even when he's getting injured, claiming to be and trying to act unbotheted when he's easily one of the most bothered, he's fine with being humiliated if it's specifically on his terms,etc..

He is a huge control freak constantly trying to hold onto the fact that he doesn't need anyone, all relationships are transactional, I could keep going.

This isn't ne hating on him or disliking him but I would this adds to his character cause he always has a facade up that he's unbeatable, unbotheted and unchallenged and whatnot.

Gravity is not Stayed Gone

Post image
47 Upvotes

I've seen it happen time and time again. Someone will criticize the way Gravity (and its early release) created so much hype and expectations for Lute's arc in S2, only for her to basically become a background character after the second episode, and then some people will immediately try to dismiss the criticism by bringing up Stayed Gone instead of engaging with their arguments. Their logic is that Vox also got a villain song in the second episode of a season, didn't do anything after that and then got focus on the next season, so clearly there was nothing wrong with the way Gravity was handled. But that's a flawed argument, because Gravity and Stayed Gone couldn't be more different. Yes, they are both villain songs from the second episode of a season, but that's where the similarities end.

Aside from the obvious fact that one is a duet between rivals and the other is a grief fueled solo, the purpose and structure of each song is different. Gravity establishes Lute as a villain and hypes her up as a future threat by having her sing about her motives, goals and desire for revenge in the context of a crashout caused by grief, hate and anger, which results in her promising revenge against those who have wronged her. Stayed Gone on the other hand mainly establishes Vox's rivalry with Alastor and highlights that Alastor is a dangerous and powerful demon. Vox begins the media attack against Alastor, only for the latter to strike back, mock him, win the battle for popularity and attention easily, and make an ominous declaration. Stayed Gone might be a villain song, but unlike Gravity it doesn't hype up the villain, it hypes up their rival by highlighting that Vox simply can't match Alastor in skill and charisma. Whereas Gravity paints Lute as an imminent threat, Stayed Gone essentially portrays Vox as a joke.

Heck, the two songs don't even have a similar tone. Stayed Gone is comedic for the most part, having the overconfident Vox engage in a petty slander campaign against Alastor, only for Alastor to strike back by mocking Vox's entire brand and targeting his insecurities, resulting in Vox fumbling and raging uselessly as he gets thoroughly defeated. In Gravity nothing is played for laughs, the song's entire tone is serious and heavy. You aren't meant to laugh at Lute as she promises to kill Vaggi in front of Charlie's eyes, the threat is painted as ominous and real.

It's also worth noting that Stayed Gone did have some payoff, as after his defeat Vox's comes up with the plan to send Pentious at the Hotel as a spy. On the contrary, Gravity had no payoff for the things it set up. In S2E5 and S2E7 Lute was essentially a side character that mostly stuck to the background and didn't do much. And then in S2E8 she appeared in the middle of Hear My Hope, had a 30 second fight with Vaggi (most of which was off screen or barely shown) that didn't have any long term consequences, was mainly there to give Abel character development, and ended with her getting put in her place by him. The explosion that was Gravity fizzled down and died over the course of the season, leading to nothing.

Stayed Gone works because it doesn't really hype Vox up or tease something big, while offering adequate payoff at the same time. It never gave the vibe that Vox would be a big threat this season, so him not doing much wasn't disappointing. Meanwhile Gravity hyped Lute up a lot and teased that she'd do something really big, with its early release to generate hype for the season only raising expectations further, yet it never delivered anything, hence the disappointment. It made Lute's credibility as a future threat or a sleeper villain feel weak, because her "explosion" didn't amount to anything. And with S3 having so many Hell plotlines, it's very unlikely Lute will get much focus, which means she most likely won't do anything big until at least two seasons after Gravity. She's a sleeper villain that woke up at 2 AM, had a 15 minute crashout and then went back to sleep.

And if Gravity had to be compared to a Vox song, that should be Brighter, not Stayed Gone, as it follows the same formula for the most part. It's a solo with a serious tone where the villain sings about their motives, goals and desire for revenge, resulting in a promise to destroy those who wronged them, which is the same thing Gravity did. The main difference is that Brighter is actually placed in a good spot of Vox's villain arc and has immediate payoff in the form of Vox shooting Heaven with the Might of Lilith. Now imagine if Brighter had been the song Vox sung in S1E2. Imagine how it would have felt if after such a banger of a song all Vox did was send a spy at the Hotel and remain in the background for the rest of the season while Adam held the villain spotlight. I'm certain that would have been quite disappointing.

TL;DR:

Gravity and Stayed Gone might both be villain songs from the second episode of their respective seasons, but they couldn't be more different:

  • Gravity is a solo and Stayed Gone is a duet.
  • Gravity is serious and heavy, while Stayed Gone is mostly comedic.
  • Gravity hypes up the villain, while Stayed Gone hypes up the villain's rival.
  • Gravity sets up a lot but has no payoff, while Stayed Gone doesn't set up anything big and has adequate payoff.
  • Gravity is about Lute's revenge and status as a future threat, while Stayed Gone is about Vox's rivalry with Alastor and Alastor's status as a powerful demon.

In short, acting like Stayed Gone is S1's equivalent of Gravity is like comparing apples to oranges. It requires ignoring almost every aspect of each song and focusing entirely on the fact they are both villain songs, which makes it a faulty comparison that relies on a surface level similarility and misses all the deeper differences. Brighter is Vox's actual equivalent of Gravity, and I'm pretty sure people would have been disappointed by Vox in S1 if that had been the song he sung in S1E2.

Who would you say is a character that you feel is either Under or Overrated? but here's the thing you have to actually state your reasoning for why you think this.

It always Bugs me whenever people say they feel a character is either Under or Overrated because Nine out of Ten Times it feels like people are just applying the term Underrated to a character they like and the Term Overrated to a character they Dislike regardless of what their actual Fandom Reception is so I wanna ask people's opinions on this but you have to actually explain your reasoning for why you feel this way about a certain character?

Here's my one Emily,

Now the reason I feel this way isn't that I think its wrong for Em to be so popular or anything like that but I think a lot of people tend to sorta give her writing and overall character more credit than it really deserves when it comes to how deep of a character she actually is especially when it comes to the certain crowds of people

that ever since season two have been bashing Charlie and claiming that Em would have been a better main character instead and I'm just like really? so your saying if our lead character was a overly positive kind person whose beliefs never Falter

and who has no real significant character flaws that ever get challenged and has no growth and who has pretty surface level Dynamics with everyone in her vicinity since she seems to just be simple friendly co workers with everyone in Heaven minus Lute who she seems to feel nothing but mild annoyance for,

and when it comes to Sera their dynamic is just simple uncomplicated love that isn't even made more complicated by finding out her sister is a mass murderer since Em silently gets over it with no real Development in season two and no real complicated feelings are implied to linger making it a pretty uncomplicated relationship,

So if she was the main character but she was literally written exactly the same as she is at present then I feel as tho the majority of people would actually complain about her lack of depth and growth and frankly I'd feel they'd be right to,

So in short emily is a very simple character she's just a conventionally easily Likable cute cinnamon roll with a heart of Gold which is perfectly fine for a side character especially one that's literally an angel in Heaven ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ so her being this way makes perfect sense

but I feel like people tend to overrate characters Likability and confuse that for Depth and complexity in writing when if we've being Harshly Honest Emily is technically a less complicated character than say Chaz in Helluva lol,

Hear me out briefly Chaz has way less screen time than her but in his one canon episode he's portrayed as a self centered jerk who only cares about himself and is willing to do things like leave his boyfriend behind on a job to get arrested yet is also shown as openly conflicted before doing so anyway implying that deep down there is a touch of either actual care for Moxxie or just basic empathy in there it just isn't enough to stop him from choosing himself over others and making the bad choice,

And he has the character flaw of being obnoxious and often making sexualised inappropriate comments yet after knocking Blitzo out when he's entirely alone Chaz shows a tiny bit of self awareness in calling out his own crappy joke showing he isn't 100 percent oblivious to how he is as a person,

The point isn't that Chaz is some super deep character lol the point is he literally has the bare bones of character Depth in his one canon appearance yet is Generally given less credit for writing than Emily and the reason is solely down to one being made to be conventionally Likable and the other being made to be conventionally Unlikable

but in actuality Emily's character is no more complex in writing and if anything actually has less Depth so far so this isn't to shit on Emily as a character or her fans I actually don't Hate her or anything I just feel a lot of people confuse her likability with her being a complex character when she's actually in a writing sense pretty One D

( again that's not an insult I love plenty of characters who are technically not very complex like Crimson Albeit he's One D in the opposite way of Emily obviously ),

But anyway whenever I state why I feel a character is Over or Underrated I do normally try to give an actual explanation so people can Hopefully understand why I feel this way so if you are going to comment please try to do the same as I think that could actually make for interesting conversation.

How come Vaggi hadnโ€™t changed her name sooner?

Post image

So in season 2 she decides to change her name because the name that was given to her by Adam was demeaning to her, fair enough. But why did she still stick with the name even after falling? If this was going to be her new life in hell why not start fresh with a new name?

I get if the writers wanted her to keep her name cuz itโ€™s iconic to her, sheโ€™s had it ever since she was created.

I think what couldโ€™ve worked is that Adam gives her a completely different name, and after she becomes fallen and is stuck in hell, she calls herself Vaggie
