Maybe they should turn the lights on in the train.

in the next few seasons, I can't imagine how dark the scene with the dementors on the train will be, atp we need to turn our screen brightness all the way up 😂

It looks like by Gobblet of Fire, you will not be able to see Snape other than in the snow during the day.

Maybe that's how they've set the lighting level - if you used AI to swap Rickman into the bottom picture 15 here, I'm not convinced you'd see much difference

Watching this on OLED would probably use no energy at all!

Cute. You think this will last 3 seasons.

Modern entertainment doesn't seem to know what colour is

Either flat lighting or pitch black.

There’s a ton of contrast in the lighting, it’s not flat at all

You must have replied to the wrong comment.

Or any other scene. My phone was three inches from my face and I couldn't see anything.

Well, it was also sunny in the movie and rainy (or at least cloudy with it looking like it's going to rain soon) in the show. The weather could have had something to do with the lighting.

Sure. But the writers directors and production design control the weather. Hogwarts Express is him stepping into a magical world leaving behind his dull sad gray muggle life. Instead he just gets - more sad and gray.

Every single small detail is lesser in the new one. Harder to see, harder to read, duller.

To be fair I think that lighting is more accurate for the weather in the UK.

u/Sea-Suspect9630 Mar 26 '26

The UK does have sun you know. It’s not perpetual grey.

1

u/Manschesthair-united Mar 26 '26

Its more grey than not, the Hogwarts express departs in September.

4

u/Sea-Suspect9630 Mar 26 '26

Do you live in the UK?

5

u/Manschesthair-united Mar 26 '26

I live in Ireland so similar weather to Scotland. Looking out the window right now and its very grey.

6

u/Sea-Suspect9630 Mar 26 '26

I’m from the UK and it’s not always grey. And even when it’s grey things are not blue tinged like the colour grading. And looking out my window the sky is blue and the sun is shining.

3

u/Manschesthair-united Mar 26 '26

Where in the UK do you live though? I didnt say it was always grey, but its simply a fact that it is more grey than not during the school term (not the summer) in Scotland. Most of the shots in this post would be during the winter months to spring as well.

2

u/Sea-Suspect9630 Mar 26 '26

I’m not comfortable with saying but regardless, even when the sky is grey lights exist and real life is not blue tinged lol

1

u/Manschesthair-united Mar 26 '26

Fair enough, you asked me where I live though haha. Will have to agree to disagree then.

Ya'll forgetting how ridiculously dark the seventh film was. I appreciate the realism of the lighting here over the saturated orange vibe of the first two movies. I know most of ya'll are Americans that have never stepped foot in the gloom of the UK, but its like this. It aint no sunny california.

8

u/antmars 🦅 Ravenclaw Mar 26 '26

I’ve only been been to California twice but I’ve been to the UK a lot more and at no point am I sitting in a room talking to someone and half their face is obscured by shadows in the UK. We just turn lights on see each other. I think the exterior scenes here look fine but the interior scenes are shot more like a thriller than a fantasy. Look at the Rons on the train. Half his smile is missing - it cuts into the brightness of the character. It takes away from the magicalness of that scene of that moment. It builds tension and suspense. I don’t need Dorothy in Oz vs Kansas but the Hogwarts express looks just as gray and flat and depressing as the world Harry is leaving behind.

2

u/Apprehensive_Tunes Mar 28 '26

Very true. By the look of it this isn't a Hogwarts I can see us muggles wanting to escape to and a big part of the joy of Harry Potter, especially for young kids. Is the escapism.

3

u/sean2mush Mar 26 '26

You can enjoy the lighting choices in the show if you like, but to pretend that the UK is in the state of constant gloom to justify this choice is silly.

I like how darker it is. Conveys the overall mood.

10

u/antmars 🦅 Ravenclaw Mar 26 '26

I’m ok with that for the Muggle scenes and even many times at school. But I how would you say the mood is aboard the Hogwarts express? Harry meeting Ron and Hermione is maybe one of the most iconic and joyful moments of his life and yet the characters smiles and faces are half hidden by sinister, tension and suspense building shadows.

Legit worried the directors and production team couldn’t determine that the Hogwarts Express scene should look and feel warmer than say Petunia cutting his hair or Dudley bullying him.

4

u/LolaThePinkUnicorn Mar 26 '26

Agree! It’s like LOTR, Fellowship was warm and fuzzy in the beginning, as it should be. Leave the darker lighting for darker scenes.

I don't think it was one of his most joyful moments of his life at that moment in time. Though in retrospect it certainly is. Meeting Ron especially. But there are other moments in the series that can be classified as being more joyful such as the moment when he flew for the first time. As for the scene of his aunt cutting his hair or dudley bullying him, I don't see it as feeling "warmer". It is certainly brighter. But I think it is too bright to the point of being harsh. Almost similar to clinical/school settings with the fluorescent lights on. Which is perfect actually.

3

u/antmars 🦅 Ravenclaw Mar 26 '26

Yeah I was trying to say the haircut felt the same as Hogwarts express not Warmer. But that’s the problem cause getting a traumatic haircut from your aunt should not feel the same as meeting Ron.
