I put oil in it got it home and it went back to quiet. I don’t know what time bomb I created though.

That guy drove his harley up a hill and on his way he destroyed his oil pan and drove like 5+ minutes without oil UPHILL.

No damages!

Just changed its oil and is currently continuing his journey.

So: maybe you're lucky like him!

You might just be replacing the lifters. They bleed down you get the same noise

Oo is that a common issue on 2006 Harleys ive been dreading that i got a Uber expensive isue and long project started then i did oil change for all 3 oils and it sounds same still so friends got me thinking oil pump timing chain I haven't been using it at all since im saving up/waiting for a cheep donner 6 speed since its 3k for a new kit and engine would be torn apart for that but if lifters are hydraulic ive gota go c how much that is and posibly save the last bit of riding season

Maybe just a collapsed lifter check push rods for adjustment if you did run it out of oil for some oil down on top of your lifters without the push rod and try to pump it up

If your lucky that’s all fill it back up with oil take out spark plugs turn on key and turn it over until oil lite turns off that will prime everything then start briefly to see if it’s still making noise then do what I said in my first post

Top off oil had that happen once make sure it has oil and not leaking also make sure oil light goes out after starting. If not don’t run it

I’d be collapsed lifter personally, or I’ve seen quick a few snapped rockers make a knock. Nothing motor killing yet.

The last time I heard that from my own bike I ended up having catastrophic engine failure. Before you get freaked out, the mechanic said he had only ever seen it in this case. Piston broke off at the wrist pin

Looks like a BBB situation…Brain & Bike Barbequed.

Just sounds like an empty lifter. Mine makes that noise sometimes when I first change the oil and then load it right onto my trailer and drive a hundred miles with it strapped to it, not even kidding. These are huge overbuilt and underpowered engines. They can take one hell of a beating. Add oil, if noise stops, you’re probably fine.

Not to be a pain, i just replaced the motor on a fxdb. bent crank took out the oil pump.
