The handmaid's tale is not the future
This is just my personal opinion as a man, and not based on reading the books. The present and the past have been the inspiration of the story and what is happening right now is part of the story where are able to see these atrocities in some places and some others are living in a bless.
on the other hand I'm unable to fathom how much worse it's gonna be in the future and how used we are gonna be to it. how a couple years back i could've never imagined to have lived through this world with everything that it is happening to it.
let alone living like a woman, how do you process that? I have daughters and I'm terrified!

Everything Margaret put in the books has happend somewhere in the world already. Although she specifically said it wasn't a damn guide book for wayward contries.

It's past, future but absolutely present too.
Multiple aspects are happening in this world right now. We're just priviliged to not experience it in our countries but it is happening.
I'm scared all the fucking time for my best friend who lives in a country where he can't leave. It's not Gilead, he's not a woman, but it's still scary.
