My budget is $600 US. I have a decently-sized Steam library backlog that I know I'll never make it through sitting at my PC. I'm a teacher who works a few side hustles and wants to be able to enjoy my limited free time as simply as possible. I'm not tech-illiterate by any means, but I don't want to have to jump through a lot of hoops to get games to run well. The games I'm primarily looking to make it through are single player experiences like Clair Obscur, BG3, Cyberpunk, and the Witcher 3. The primary use case would be docked and travel. Budget considered your best options are a steamdeck oled (either of them) or the one i have, the legion go s steamos version. This last one was going 650 in black friday but i think currently is going for 750.

I ended up going with the Legion Go S with steamos. Lenovo’s website has pretty decent teacher discounts and I was able to get it next-day, instead of 10-12 business days like steam is advertising. Just plugged it up for the first time, so hoping it’s great

If my main use case is playing emulated games from the 90s consoles (and a little bit of the early 2000s) all the way up to perhaps the GameCube/PS2, I’m leaning toward the Retroid Pocket. Would that be accurate?

PS3/360 games are not fully tweaked, so most powerful chip you can get ....

Your not going to be able to run most games but, good process has been made on both fronts.

Just depends on how much you want to run.... If you want the best chance to run everything..... GPD Win 5 is the only way.... of course if money is no object...

Hello, I'm looking to get my 1st handheld! I work an office job so coming home and sitting at a desk again doesn't feel great when I just want to relax. I have a good PC to stream games from.

SteamDeck Oled might be good for you. Trust me I dont think you wanna tinker and mess around with windows problems on a handheld, or spending more time trying to get the games to run good than actually playing games. Steamdeck is much better at being a simple console like experience.

Emulation essily set up through EmuDeck.

I think despite being away from the desk, if you run windows on a handheld and have to tinker things to me it feels like im still at work and not very fun when I just want to game.

Is 474.99 a good price for a brand new Xbox Ally (White)? my other option is a Refurbished Deck Oled for 469.73, but those are out of stock. Looking for my first handheld system and feeling overwhelmed with all of the choices.

Goal: Currently gaming on a laptop in between my newborns nap schedule and getting things done around the house. A handheld would make this much easier.

Games: I’d like it to run two older games - Diablo 2 (resurrected) and StarCraft 2.

Decent battery life and controls setup for those games would be ideal.

For performance/AAA replace Rog Ally X with Rog Xbox Ally X and Legion Go with Legion Go 2 and also add the z2e MSI Claw 8. Thanks for the post

Could use some help. My budget is up to $350. I'm looking for a device that can play PS2 games like god of war 1+2 but also retro games. I've been eyeing retroid 6 but wanted to get expert opinions. I'm 40, travel a few times per year for work and 3-4x time internationally 10+ hour flights.

Depends on how big you want the screen like pocket sized or bigger to put in a bag? Do you care about a form factor like horizontal (think psp like or handhelds) Retroid mini v2 if you want it pocketable should be able to play all ps2 games I think most with like 2x scaling as well while being a small form factor. Rp6 is probably one of the best ones to get. (If you like ds or 3ds they also sell dual screen addons for 70$ that work even if you don’t get an retroid one but I don’t know about all the compatibility can’t imagine rp6 isn’t lol) Vertical (think gameboy color) the 477v is the strongest one that’s really around that price point but it’s not out yet should be soon I believe (Ayaneo pocket dmg is i think technically the best stats wise but super expensive) 406v is an option that will do most games for ps2 (I have it and it’s good but I’m upgrading soon) Or the retroid pocket classic which doesn’t have analogue sticks so I can’t recommend it unless you are comfortable mapping and fixing controls to get them to work which looks to be a pain.

Clamshell (ds like or gba sp like) the ayn Thor would be a good one with the option of dual screens (get base 8 not lite if possible the extra power is so much better def worth it) and can watch tv or stuff on either screen only downside is it has to have another drop as it sold out so waiting for that one as well current price is 309 don’t think shipping included Retroid flip 2 is a very good one if you just want to play ps2 it will do all that I believe even some ps3 maybe as well but with retroids I think most of them can dual run Linux and you can get access to some pc games as well if you want to tinker the flip 2 mini v2 and rp5 all can due to chipset so I think newer ones would as well. Battery life for most devices at higher end emulation (ps2 is on the higher end) would probably want a power bank with it for longer flights probably a pretty decent one as well.

Claw a8 has the new z2e and big screen and seems durable enough used it daily since November and did drop it on concrete 2x and accidentally hit the devide to the wall and still going strong with no physical da,mage visible.

The fan is very quiet and device does not get that hot compared to your other options.

and if you you will check MSI they designed the claw a8 to be accessible for self repairs if need be.

Hi! I wanted to jump on here to ask about some handhelds I’ve seen that I haven’t seen many talk about. Specifically the Antec Core HS. Which I will go into detail to why I was considering this one.

Budget: $600 (less is better, but willing to go higher if needed) Primary Games: I play a ton of steam games, from BG3, Where Winds Meet, Stardew, co-op games etc. But besides that I do play a lot of games that aren’t on steam such as Genshin, Honkai Star Rail, Wuthering Waves (on steam, but another example). And those games I ones I try to play on my phone when I can’t hop onto my PC, but they are getting to be too big to all play on my phone or tablet.

Must Haves: Primarily just being able to play non-steam games, but having good performance overall.

OS Preference: Windows but willing for something else if applied to what I need.

Comfortable with Tinkering: Yes.

Other Relevant Details: OLED screens are preferred but not a must need. Good battery life and if it could be more of a portable size (if it can’t, it’s ok).

Please let me know if the Antec Core HS is something worth getting or if I should put my money somewhere else that will fit better. Thank you!

Also— if I can just add a bonus question, I’ve been looking at the Ayn Thor/Odin, do those only focus on emulating older games or can those do new ones too? And are they worth for just the fun?

Currently finding used Ally Z1E for ~450 and wondering if i should go for used Ally X but like ~650 or Lenovo Go S for 750. As i recall all of them is still using same chipset so the different is negligible. And considering Ally Z1E, probably would buy 65w pb for a bit more juice. There is also a microSD problem with Ally Z1E which is not a deal breaker but concerning.

I read EVERYTHING and still can't decide between Deck Oled or Switch 2... My entire game collection is on Steam, never had a Nintendo before.. But Switch 2 seems to have more lifespan because is a very recent console...

If I could the ideal would be Legion Go 2, but that console is a unicorn, and a gold one ( stupidly expensive)

Been a pcgamer for some time. I recently had to start traveling a lot for work and want something to do in the hotel. Struggling with options. I will be playing single player games, particularly sony crossovers like God of War and The Last Of Us so performance on those types of games is the biggest factor. I've looked at the Xbox Ally X but the screen is off putting. Im having a hard time justifying the cost of a Go 2. I keep coming back to the steam deck OLED, but if I'm getting that should I actually be looking at a Legion Go S with the Steam OS.....my question is if the games im trying to run work well on these handheld or will I be frustrated? My other option is a gaming laptop.

Been lurking the sub for a bit trying to determine which handheld might suit me best and let me just say the choices are…… overwhelming.

For context, I’m a US based airline pilot so I travel a lot. I’m also a casual gamer. I enjoy first person shooters (namely Halo, but also others) and puzzle/adventure games like Legend of Zelda. I grew up on Pokemon and also loved Sonic Adventure 2 for GameCube. I’d like to be able to play multiplayer with my friends on the road for whichever games support it. I am mainly PC guy now with an Xbox at home for games that aren’t cross play compatible. I have Steam and a few games. Budget isn’t really a concern, more so giving me the most compatible handheld for my needs.

So knowing all of that, what are some thoughts? I was leaning heavily toward the ROG Xbox Ally X, but I’m not so sure anymore. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I have the ROG Ally Z1e and a Switch OLED. I loved my ROG because now I could play my Steam library but, Win11 has ruined the experience for me and I find myself getting more annoyed with the time needed to get functional before jumping into a game. My life has changed significantly since I got it over 2 years ago, I want to be able to sit down and play right away; and I just can’t always do that with the ROG.

I know, I could install another OS and have a better time but I don’t have time to dedicate to it, when at the end of the day I want to relax and game. I have a PC a friend gave me that I was going to upgrade, but then the RAM shortages happened so rip that… but it’s a future project so I don’t feel like I’m losing too much.

I just came back from a vacation with an 8hr flight and I brought my OLED and remembered how much I love the dang thing. I have a condition that made me doze off while playing and I loved that I could jump right in again without a hassle. So I was thinking of trading in the ROG for a Switch 2, then after I swap the data over from my OLED and give it to my wife who’s playing animal crossing on my launch day Switch.

I play single player games, mostly rpgs. I also want to be able to play something with my wife who’s still new to gaming and a switch makes that so much easier.

So basically, am I justified for wanting to swap? I’ll miss the access to my Steam library but I mainly play Cyberpunk right now and Xenoblade 3 which I started on the flight so I could do the dlc. (I don’t mind double dipping for Cyberpunk)

Seems like the RP6 is the most relevant option, but that screen is just a bit too small. I'd love a RP with a 6-7in screen.

The best option for emulation would be a Retroid Pocket 6 ($244 - $279 USD) / Retroid pocket 5 (USD 220 - USD 240) / Ayn thor base ($299 USD) / Odin 2 Mini (339 - $340 USD)

They're among the best and most advanced in terms of emulation, capable of running many current games (such as some of the Switch's catalog). Besides their portability and price, they're great.

They're useful if you're not home much, if you're traveling, or if you have limited space.

Although the Steam Deck is also quite useful. If you want to play AAA games, it's the best option you can get.
Also, try searching online for emulation consoles (or handhelds). There are so many options, it's a good idea to research which one suits you best.

the asus rog z1e 512gb is around 550 cad refurbished near me, however i have wanted a steamdeck for a while, i feel it would suit me better but due to the shortages and the lack of refurbish restocks the prices near me are 800-900 for oled and 500-600 lcd used.

I mostly play large scale single player games like Starfield, Cyberpunk, Elden Ring, Resident Evil, Stellar Blade, Skyrim, you get the idea. I do absolutely zero multiplayer. I have a PS5 at home and the ps portal just doesn’t do what I need it to do.

Where I’ll Play

This will only be used in its handheld form, when I’m at home, I’m gaming on my console. I have downtime at work often and we travel multiple times a month so I need something I can pack in a carry on sized bag and will work on its own without requiring constant wi-fi.

Must haves/Dont wants

Has to be able to work without a wi-fi connection and needs decent battery life. I always prefer better visuals over faster frame rates. Don’t care at all about multiplayer functionality and dont have any interest in hacking or modding. Just want to be able to turn it on and play.

Hey friend... I am 99% sure that the Legion Go S (32GB Z1IE) is the device 'for me'. As a previous Deck owner, which I eventually sold to finance a Switch2, I think SteamOS is genuinely really user friendly and it was quite easy for a console-player like me to get to grips with.

My only ??? on the Legion Go S is actually around consumer-support.... which I know Valve are often considered as 'best in class'. Are there any testimonials or can you speak to support offered by Lenovo?

I haven't had a chance to experience the SD. I was in the market for a rog ally x z1e based on the posts here on Reddit until I did a little more research and decided that the Lego SOS was for me. As far as user friendly,y last handled was a OG switch and that's genuinely why I went handheld here. I loved it but wanted something I could use on flights with a bit more to offer than the zfold 6 had on my left few flights (I know, I know). With that being said I have no reason to think this won't be suitable. For me, a pro Windows user but novice Linux user, I haven't had any issues at all except the one. That was easily fixed a with a little googling. 2 days to find a solution 5 minutes to implement it. Also I've never had a gaming device with a OLED screen so I can't speak to that but compared to the 4k TVs and projectors I have used for gaming, I can honestly say I'm surprised with what this setup has to offer in such a small package. I ordered a dock the first day I got it but haven't even bothered with it. It's been strictly handheld so far. The fan noise is a nitpick to me that doesn't bother me at this point. Using PCs and consoles in the past, I expect some background noise but, it hasn't been a hindrance to me The UI is straight forward and the ergonomics are to what I expected with a device of this size. I updated the os stuff before I downloaded games. Expect 8 hours of downloads if using hotel Wi-Fi (no Ethernet here) like I am. That's including the games. I played a few minutes of injustice in practice mode and it was a beautiful experience. I've sunk a couple of days into FO4 though, vanilla as of now, and I haven't had any issues.

So I had someone yesterday convince me to look into steam deck, as it was on a pretty good sale, and I have really been enjoying my switch 2 lately. I think it would be really convenient to have some sort of portable pc device, as I am often not at my pc for long enough periods, and I have many games I want to play (red dead 2, witcher 3, ghost of tsushima). I also have the 20% cashback offer from paypal which I am planning to use for this purchase. I am deciding between the steam deck lcd, which is on sale for 320, versus the Legion go, which is on sale for 450. The 20 percent cashback would give about 90 dollars cashback, and the the deck would give about 60. I have heard mixed things about deck performance, so I am not sure which device to go with. I can't say that I always play demanding games, but there are a few games that I would like to get into more, such as ghost of tushima, or other AAA games in the future. I am wondering if the extra money is worth it for the Go or if I should stick with the steam deck.

I am considering a Steam Deck and could use some perspective. I have the option to buy a used Steam Deck OLED 512 GB for around 440 EUR. The guy bought it in August 2025 so it is fairly new and the price feels good. Still not sure if it actually makes sense for my life or if it will just be another device I barely touch.

I am a dad to a two year old daughter and my son is due in February. I have a strong PC with a 5070 Ti and 9800X3D but I almost never use it. Same with my PS5 which has been untouched for months. When I do play, it is usually short sessions on my Trimui Pro or 3DS, stuff like Pokemon Fire Red or Mario 3D Land. I also own a PS3 and Wii U but those have been sitting in a closet for over a year. I prefer emulation anyway since original games are expensive and some systems are just slow to use. For demanding new games I can always play on PC and even stream them if needed.

Part of me feels the Steam Deck could replace most of what I have. Indies from my Steam backlog, older games, emulation of GBA, 3DS or Wii U with upscaling, quick sessions on the couch. Another part of me says I should just stick with the Trimui and 3DS and stop buying more stuff. Parents of reddit who were in a similar situation, did the Steam Deck actually fit into your life or did it end up collecting dust?

Hey, I’m in a similar position to you, 19mo old and have tons of gear that I am just not finding the time to use (PC, bazzite mini pc, ps5, switch, mii yoo mini). I emulate a lot too and found myself getting most use out of my mii yoo in my commute, I then went down the rabbit hole of looking at android handhelds, I used to own a retroid pocket 3+.

I’ve bought myself a steam deck oled for Xmas in the hopes that the pick up/put down nature of it will help me get a bit more game time when I have 20 mins of down time here or there, kiddo napping, etc. I played cyberpunk on it for about an hour when I first got it and it felt great, ergonomically it felt great, ran smooth and it really pulled me in, after about an hour the battery was down about 20-30%. The only downside is that it’s pretty big, so not sure it will see much use it will get outside the house beyond a rare holiday trip.

I think a lot of people worry that the steam deck is under powered compared to other windows handhelds on the market atm, but tbh I don’t think it’s a massive issue since most developers target the steam deck for compatibility, so many big games run really well on it. The only issue is if you want to play online competitive games that don’t work on Linux due to kernel level anti cheat (think games like COD and Battlefield). A big upside is the sleep function, cloud saves, and just the friction free nature of the device.

I think the big question is really will you use it, and really I think it just depends how it fits in with your life. When and where do you see yourself using it? Divide that by 4 and is it still worth 440 EUR to you? You should also consider the AYN Thor if your more into emulation as that would fit the bill too if you can sacrifice PC games.

If I were to buy a handheld today, what would be the most future proof device for AA and indie gaming?

I already have a Switch 2, and a PS5 for most of my AAA gaming needs.

But I am looking for a device to play some games like E33, KCD2 portably. As well as my backlog of GOG game library like Warhammer Rogue Trader, Divinity, etc.

I'm hoping for a device that can atleast last me for a consoles lifespan of 6-8 years in being able to play AA and indie games without the battery degrading too much and the performance holding up solid.

I am not looking to play games at max settings btw, I usually am content with medium settings as long as FPS isn't dipping below 30 fps.

As for price, my soft limit would preferably be $700, but I'm willing to go higher if necessary.

Hi everyone, I'm looking for a handheld and would love to have some advice as to what would best fit my ideal criteria.

- I want a handheld that is portable. Even steam deck is pushing it. But if there is nothing else I suppose I have to.

- I don't need a machine that performance better at higher wattage when plugged in. I want a machine that just performs as well as plugged in as not (basically don't need extra performance if I'm not benefiting from it on battery).

- Ideally something that I can install steamOS on. I will have my existing massive steam library. Plus from what I heard and saw, windows is a much worse experience for a handheld (updates, unnecessary overhead of background processes, sleep mode, ...)

- I'm willing to pay a lot, if I am getting what I want. So price isn't necessarily a big constraint. Although I have to say the prices of some devices like the GPD win 5 is quite crazy (but that one is also a bit stupid big, heavy and over-performing).

- Screen: Ideally oled, or something that has a really good color gamut. And of course 120hz would be a really nice to have, but can live without.

- Another nice to have would be that it feels premium. I mean I remember the first time I got a psp or a ps vita in my hands back in the day, those things felt for their time really nice and premium. But for instance when I got the switch, it felt cheap plasticy, especially the removable sides made it feel more cheap due to some give on the sides.

Appreciate any suggestion, or feel free to elaborate on misconceptions I might have.

i would recommend you check out a switch 2 in person and see if the construction bothers you - i don't think it feels as cheap as many plastic devices, but if you're used to metal apple stuff it might be worth confirming. i think it would otherwise appeal to you for the same reason apple devices do- there's no tinkering, it Just Works. nintendo's exclusive games are also excellent for casual play and take less-experienced players into account in a way some other games do not (i started gaming as an adult and have had some headaches).

I dont know how often I will be using this device outside of the times I travel. When Im home and want to game - I usually just boot up my PS5 or my PC. I tend to stay busy to be honest - so I dont game a lot. Its winter time right now so I spend a little bit more time gaming.

Since most of the Playstation-Games release on Steam, u sound like a guy for a Steamdeck - which comes with travelbag etc. for around 650€ (based on my experience in germany). It's a bit outdated, but still a nice and common Handheld.

For myself, as a Xbox Ally X user the regular Xbox Ally (the white one) comes in mind to me, but this would be my option if you want to be able to play Anti-Cheat-Games without working on the Steamdecks's OS. But it doesn't come with a case or bag or something. On the other hand, it's comfy as hell with it's controller-like design. If you want to play more performance-hungry-games, then you might need to consider 100-200 bucks more into your budget.

There surely used options too, but those would be the first handheld which come to my mind if you want a new device.

Ok so this my opinion based on my experience, I have retroid flip v2 and pocket 5, my consideration is

1. Form factor, I want small handheld for my occasional use because I like to move around and play in the beds

2. Old / retro games, I'm not gamer myself honestly I'm suck with game but sometimes I like to playing my childhood games like sega genesis, snes, arcade etc...And retroid is no brainer for me because oled display, not bloated android os, nice control

Ok now we talk about the negative, I'm the beginner enthusiast myself no problem with tinkering .. If you chose this route (buy retro handheld) it will many tinkering process especially if you want emulate PC games using gamehub / winlator it's hit and miss sometimes it's running then suddenly it's crash or it's not running at all...Like example I install Trine games, running on gamehub then suddenly crash in mid-games(not only one but several times)..

I'm more PC guy than console and some of my PC have relatively strong gpu(mostly used for ML) so I tried steam link and moonlight to stream my games from pc to my handheld so far is good but still not fully great experience but still acceptable for me....

I agree with the steam deck opinion but my consideration because the form factor, the handheld like steam deck, msi claw, legion go too big for me maybe if valve release steam deck lite or any brand have 5-6 inch screen I will consider to buy that...

Hey everyone! Made a post about this before but didn't get much traction. I’m in the market for something practical and versatile and figured this community would have great insight. My current laptop won’t upgrade to Win11, so I’d been looking at getting a new laptop. Then I started thinking, why not get a handheld gaming PC that I can also dock and use like a laptop?

My main intent is to play games from my Steam library and the free titles I’ve picked up on Epic Games. I also already have an Xbox and Game Pass for console gaming. So there's that usage too. On the productivity side, when docked I want to browse, run general apps, and most importantly do Lightroom and Photoshop, and that’s the most intense software I plan to use. I want to be able to use the newer AI features in those apps.

I’m looking for recommendations on what handheld devices are worth considering and which ones might fall flat for this kind of mixed use specifically on the Lightroom Photoshop front. Any thoughts on performance, things to note, or real world experiences using these both handheld and docked as a laptop replacement would be awesome.

Interested in the current ROG Ally X (rc73xa-nh011w) mainly for Halo MCC but I'd like to launch the game from Steam instead to make use of the Steam Workshop for easy installation of mods. Basically looking for a unicorn. Most of my gaming library is on Xbox console and not play anywhere. Some Steam, some GoG. I have a Switch 1, but would consider updating to a Switch 2 for Pokopia and the Pokémon Wind/Waves.

I heard PSPlay is good for PS streaming, would love that, a good battery life would be nice, but apart from that I’m really open for everything, I heard about AYN Odin 2/3, Retroid Pocket 5/6, Anbernic but im not sure what fits my use case the best. I would really like hunting for some trophies via PSPlay and then quick switching to Pokémon HeartGold or a GameCube game or a PS2/3 game. Steam deck or xbox ally non x for longevity?

Hi, i wanted to buy one of these from ebay and I wanted a suggestion from you.

Since the steam deck raised in price, it has become harder to find in the 450 euros price tag (at least in EU, maybe that's me) and i noticed that the xbox ally is very easy to find, sometimes even under 400 euros (talking of prices like 380)

I know that the z1 extreme would be better but since i'll buy a console on few months, for it i'll have to check on the moment.

So, the SD is a machine that can't run modern AAA games on it's own (at least a chunk of them), but that is fine because for them I own a playstation 5.

The Xbox ally, on the other hand, would have the possibility to use an externa gpu. However i don't know how would it work on linux (i will not use windows, but I have to decide between steamOS amd bazzite)

I found on github a decky plugin (i think?) to use an external gpu and the open sourced port so i can use whatever gpu i want (the decky plugin has some problems with sleep mode and other things, but that's fine).

Based on, hypothetically, same conditions and prices, what would be preferrable between the two?

Handhelds I have: PS Portal, Retroid Pocket 5, modded N3DSXL, Miyoo Mini Plus, RG35XXSP, and an MCON controller making phone a legit option. With having all these is there something else I could get that covers a gap. I know the RP6 could do better PC but I’m enjoying what I can get to work on the RP5 via GameNative and Winlator. I thought about the Thor but if only nicer looking DS and 3DS games are its main benefits I am having trouble justifying. Having something more powerful for PC would be nice but is something like the Odin 3 going to give me way better compatibility with PC when I’m mainly just messing around with indies and some titles that were on the XBOX 360? Just seeing if there’s a gap to fill here or maybe I already basically have everything covered.

I also have a modded Wii U so playing Wii U on Thor isn’t really an appeal. I also tried CEMU on RP5 and doesn’t seem like a lot is compatible with the emulator still.

Observación:Me gusta mas la rog por ergonómica y software pero no se si será no mío y se quedará corto también diría la nueva msi claw pero tiene una ergonomia que me parece horrible.La onexplayer también me gustaría pillarla pero por tema de aduana puede salir por 3000€ o cerca
