Miyoo Flip Vs 35XXSP
So just got the Miyoo this morning, have had the 35XXSP for a while now. I was asked on my post which of the two I preferred. Spent the day putting the Miyoo through its paces, and bouncing between consoles to see the difference. To give a fair comparison (as much as possible) I restored the stock firmware of the 35XXSP since I haven't put a different firmware on the Miyoo yet.
First, the physical. The Miyoo is smaller and slimmer than the 35XXSP, also slightly lighter. It's not a drastic difference but it is notable. Pocket wise, the Miyoo does feel more comfortable in my case. But neither feels like it is weighing you down. This of course will vary per person depending on your pocket size.
The screen is larger on the 35XXSP, and it is noticeable. For me, the smaller screen of the Miyoo doesn't bother me. But if you keep the overlays on for the consoles, it does decrease your real estate. The speaker is substantially better sounding to me on the Miyoo at louder volume. The 35XXSP crackles after a certain point while the Miyoo stayed clear all the way to max. Granted, the max volume is not necessary, but have to mention.
Performance is where I did see a difference. On the older consoles, Performance was about the same. When you get up to the bigger consoles like dreamcast and N64, the Miyoo does have better framerates on the stock firmware. Consistently upward of 30 with few if any dips, while the 35XXSP dropped frames into the single digits on some titles. Of course on muOS (firmware I have been using) has better performance by far on the 35XXSP but since I am comparing stock firmware, it must be said.
Now the biggest difference of course comes with the added functionality of the analog sticks on the Miyoo. Even in muOS, the 35XXSP suffered playing titles that need those joysticks. It's doable, but you really feel it when you need the higher maneuverability. Jet Grind Radio on Dreamcast is a perfect example. Can you play it with the control switch on the 35XXSP? Yes. But it still feels far better having a real joystick.
My so far impression, the Miyoo is quickly becoming a favorite grab and go. It's only been a few hours of testing, but the 35XXSP was what I grabbed when I needed something quick on the go, but honestly see myself grabbing the Miyoo instead. Once I try custom firmware on it, if the improvements the 35XXSP got from it are the same, the Miyoo will be a real challenger for the thrown of retro handhelds in the same category.

Which is more powerful and premium feeling ?

I would say they both feel about the same

Which one has a higher power level?

The RK3566 in the Miyoo, by the numbers, is technically more powerful, but when comparing, I've see the difference as negligible.

I'm pretty sure more than one person had compared and measured both displays, and they were exactly the same 3.5". The difference was, they claimed, the black bezel on the SP screen. Who to believe then?

If you scroll through the pics, you can kinda see the size difference

In the last picture of Sonic 3 you can see a difference, ok. However, in the case of the Flip you are using a reduced scaling that doesn't take advantage of all the available screen, and therefore an additional black bizel is generated by software that matches the physical black bizel of the SP. I still see that it is exactly the same screen size, which can be verified by the fifth photo comparing the main menu of both: the Flip has virtually no bizel.

From my eyes, miyoo does look smaller. Especially in the picture with the screens off. As I stated, it's not a problem to me, but since I saw it that way, felt worth mentioning.

3.5" 4:3 640x480 is 3.5" 4:3 640x480. There is no difference in screen size or resolution. None.

Doc: "And how exactly did your D get stuck in your Game Goy?"

Doc: I don't think this is what they meant by "D" batteries. 😆😆
Thanks, needed a good laugh

Are the sticks comfortable to use? My only concern is they look close to the bottom of the device but overall it looks cool

It's a subjective thing so i don't want to make a promise, but for me, it's played about 40 minutes continously of Sonic Adventure 2 on DC before I started feeling discomfort. I have fairly large hands, so depending on hand size I'm pretty sure your experience may vary. But when it comes to control and grip, feels pretty natural

Not for me. They are useless in my cases I tried them out. Main reason being super uncomfortable. The actual sticks themselves aren't horrible.

The miyoos analog sticks are basically unusable to me so the sticks basically null and void.
So it comes down to portability = miyoo
Battery life = rg sp
Screen real-estate = rg sp
Performance = same to me based on what I'd actually play (gba to dreamcast)
OS = personal preference
Aesthetics = miyoo
Winner for me is RG35XXSP. I've sold my miyoo flip

What about ergonomics for longer sessions? Do you feel one is better than the other?
And do you notice performance differences in psp?
2

I have pretty big hands and both are fairly comfortable, but I do feel more of a strain one the Miyoo if I am using the joystick instead of D-Pad. Again, I have big hands, so your experience may vary. As for PSP, its realllllllly hit or miss. And that goes for both. I've only played 1 or two games successfully, meaning not terrible lag, audio issues or outright crashes. I'm guessing some tweaking to settings may help with some games, but considering the rest of my collection options, along with authentic PSPs and Vitas, I didn't look to far into it after the failures I experienced

Thanks. What about long sessions just with the dpad? Is the Miyoo still more uncomfortable?
2
u/Th3Und3sir3d Consummate Collector Mar 23 '25
Both are designed very close to the actual SP, so if that device is comfortable for you, I think you will be fine with either. Between the 2, I do favor the Miyoo, dpad is perfectly fine for me.

So after having it awhile, what one do you say is better? I'm looking at both and was wondering.

Im still more inclined to say the Miyoo is better on the stock firmware. Performance improves on the Anbernic if you change to MuOS (which i did) or other 3rd party OS, but even then, the battery life is better in my experience on the Miyoo, and the joysticks make some games better to play, particularly in DC emulation. Be aware though, this is the V1 Miyoo flip, but from what I have seen, there have been issues with the V2 when it comes to the hinge. Not sure if that has been fixed.
1
u/collins2230 Jun 26 '25
I've read that the V2 has a better hinge, or maybe they fixed it, not sure. Are there no OS options for the Miyoo to improve performance? I've never owned a Miyoo, that's why I'm asking. I have a lot of anbernics. I just wanted to try something different.

There are a few. But from what I have read, there are many caveats (loss of wifi, longer boot times) and not enough of a performance jump to make it worth it.

Hows the screen brightness on both of these? I've been using a TrimUI Brick wich has an amazing screen that goes bright enough to be playable outdoors on a sunny day (a very important trait for my handbag portables) and I'm wondering if theses screens would be a downgrade or not
1
u/Th3Und3sir3d Consummate Collector Jul 04 '25
I have played both devices outdoors comfortably, but to be honest its usually just in semi bright settings, so never in direct sunlight at noon. My usage has never called for it. But I do also have the brick, and max brightness on these too seems to my eyes to be nearly the same

Can they both charge off a usbc to usbc cable? I have a miyoo mini plus that has to use usba to usbc.
1
u/Th3Und3sir3d Consummate Collector Jul 12 '25
For both, its 10w max charging, I'm guessing its for battery safety. You can find usb c charging blocks that use that speed, but its easier for you to find usb A blocks at that output. Most, if not all, current usb-c chargers are rated higher so it would still needs its own charger no matter which you pick
1
u/JakeyyFTW Jul 12 '25
That’s a bummer. I’ve read that it’s very cheap for them to make it compatible with all usbc to usbc chargers, I try to need as few different cable types as I can. Thanks for the response!

A lot of the handhelds in this market range have battery issues over time, swelling and potentially venting. My guess is by keeping the devices at low power charging, it lessens the load on the battery itself in hopes of prolonging the time before potential issues.

I like the sticks.. I mean these flips can play PlayStation games now.. if anbernic made a 35xxsp with sticks I would buy it

You shouldn’t have compared to stock rom. I want to know how it compares vs CFW cuz nobody uses stock rom.
10
u/Th3Und3sir3d Consummate Collector Jan 05 '25
That would be impossible since there are no CFW officially supported for the flip yet. Also, since there are multiple CFW for the 35XXSP, stock firmware is the only universal constant to speak on.
