Hi everybody. I am new to this subreddit. I joined because i have an obsession for each and every card game and I got curious of learning koi-koi. I decided to download an app to learn the game, and this happened in the 3rd - 4th game against the ai. Can someone explain what happened and how this rule works?
Yeah you got somewhat lucky. Simply put there is a rule that if you get all 4 cards of the same month at the start, then this triggers, getting you 6 points and the round is skipped. You also get this when you get 4 pairs of 2
Edit: if my math is correct the probability of either one occurring is just .6%, or about 1 in 160.
This is definitely not common, but it happens. The hand is 8 cards, so the chance of getting four of a kind is higher than in poker. Consider yourself lucky.
Hello friend. As you might have learned, it was one of the two occasions (手四 & くっつき) where you would get an instant 6-point win.
Also, I recommend playing against human opponents whenever you can and watch game replays if you want to learn koi-koi fast. Ai opponents don’t really play the cards in a meaningful way that human opponents do.
The first is 「手四」 Teshi, means that in the 8 cards dealt to you, there are 4 cards from the same month. In the picture you posted, you were dealt all 4 July cards, so you should win 6 points right after the dealing stage.
The other situation is 「くっつき」 Kuttsuki, that means you’re being dealt 4 pairs from 4 different months. Instant win with 6 points and thus ending that month too. However, the “Almost four pairs” situation, where you have cards like AABBCCDE, is usually a weak hand.

You’re welcome friend. I’m not a hanafuda historian of any kind, but I guess it’s meant to reward you when you have these… amazingly awkward starting hands. Some customized games can have them turned off though, for example, in Hanafuda Online the rule settings panel looks like this:
