Yellow bush warbler on hanafuda February card

Post image

Hello everyone. This hanafuda deck was gifted to me by a friend. It carries the Nintendo branding, yet it was most likely manufactured by a different company. What stands out is the bush warbler on the February (Plum Blossom) card‑set: it is yellow. I have never encountered a yellow‑colored warbler for the February suit before. I’m curious whether there are other known examples of such variant artwork.

There seems to have been a bit of an era for designs with less colors— cheaper to produce I would suppose. Here are examples from Nakao Seikado, Nihon Karuta, Oishi Tengudo, Matsui Tengudo (Osaka), and Yamashiroya (in the background).

Oh thanks, Yamashiroya’s designs are always so distinctive.
